No matter how you slice it, a new, comfortable mattress will cost you at least a few hundred dollars — sometimes even a few thousand. While the best overall pick in our latest test of the best mattresses is less expensive than the majority of the luxury mattresses we evaluated in the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab, sometimes the splurge is worth it. If your budget allows spending anywhere between around $1,500 on the low and almost $9,000 on the highest end, we found the best luxury mattresses that will pay themselves off with each night's sleep.

What's the best luxury mattress for most people? Our top-tested luxury mattress is Tempur-Pedic's Pro Adapt Mattress. It conforms to the shape of your body, providing cloud-like cushioning and targeted support to help maintain a neutral, spinal alignment, according to our testers. Alternatively, if you aren't a fan of the "sink-in" feel of the brand's foam or you're hoping to spend under $2,000 without sacrificing quality, opt for the Saatva Classic Mattress, a high-end traditional innerspring.

Choosing a mattress — especially a high-end model — is no easy task because you want to be sure the mattress you invest in will last for years. That's why we've surveyed more than 10,000 mattress owners and worked with consumer testers to evaluate hundreds of models, including organic mattresses and pillow-top mattresses. We paid close attention to construction, support, firmness level, ease of set-up and more to identify the top-performing luxury mattresses you won't regret buying.

Pros

  • Pressure-relieving memory foam
  • Improved testers' sleep quality
  • High scores for holding up over time

Cons

  • May run warm for some

There's nothing quite like a Tempur-Pedic mattress. Our survey panelists and consumer testers alongside hundreds of the brand's mattress owners were blown away by the Pro Adapt Mattress. Made using pressure-relieving memory foam, testers were particularly impressed by how comfortable and supportive it felt over time. As the name suggests, it adapts specifically to the shape of your body as you sleep.

Who it's best for: Users who want a bed that conforms to the shape of their body for targeted pressure relief with a sink-in foam feel.

Tester notes: The Pro Adapt is one of the brand's most popular mattresses and received high marks from our survey respondents. Several users highlighted its ability to retain its shape over time, rather than forming indentations like others they've owned, even after years of use. One even described her experience as "love at first sleep." Plus, several of our consumer testers have reported a notable difference in their sleep quality since swapping to this bed. The caveat is, according to some users, the all-foam version runs hot, but Tempur-Pedic's LuxeBreeze Mattress combines its famous foam with cooling technology at a slightly higher premium.

Pros

  • High scores from real users
  • Quality materials
  • Durable construction

Cons

  • $99 return fee

Saatva's Classic Mattress is the brand's most popular model and for good reason. From the excellent edge support to the durable construction, the bouncy feel is a crowd-pleaser and a notable favorite among the 10,000 mattress owners we've surveyed. Plus, Saatva ships its mattress with complimentary white-glove delivery and has a generous 365-day trial period. But note you'll have to pay a $99 pick-up fee if you decide to return it.

Who it's best for: Users looking for the bounce and breathability of a traditional luxury innerspring mattress, plus free white-glove delivery and mattress removal at a less hefty cost.

Tester notes: Compared to other brands, Saatva has consistently earned top praise from our panelists. Many users highlighted the excellent comfort and support and even shared how their sleep quality has improved since sleeping on this specific model. In fact, even our Lab analysts have been impressed with the high-quality materials and edge support, which makes it especially great for anyone who struggles to get in and out of bed.

Pros

  • Alternating foam and micro-coil layers
  • Support and breathable design
  • Luxurious height
  • Conforms to sleeper's body

Cons

  • Lacks good edge support
  • Tester experienced shipping delays and difficulty with DIY set-up

Experts and testers alike were so impressed with this new hybrid model that we awarded it a Good Housekeeping Bedding Award. Its notable height adds to its luxurious design, alongside five layers of foam and two layers of micro-coils between the high-density foam. The coils throughout help create more breathability in this hybrid mattress while also offering superb support and cushioning. The Midnight Elite arrives in two boxes for a DIY set-up and you'll enjoy 100 nights before you can no longer return the mattress.

Who it's best for: Side and hot sleepers who will benefit from a medium feel with unparalleled support and excellent breathability, thanks to the alternating foam and micro-coil layers.

Tester notes: The Midnight Elite mattress wowed each person who slept on it. One textiles analyst even reported, "I wasted so much time lying on this mattress. I couldn't get up from the bed because it just felt so comfortable." Our tester appreciated the tall height and noted the mattress confirmed to her body, although she found the edges sunk in when she sat at the edge of the bed. She gave it top scores for every category except quick delivery and easy set-up because the two boxes arrived at different times and it was difficult to carry the heavy boxes on her own. Still, she found the mattress to be the best of both worlds as a side and hot sleeper: supportive and breathable, "I will be keeping this mattress until it fails," she said.

Pros

  • Unique innerspring coil system for firm support
  • High-quality design
  • Available to try in stores

Cons

  • Long delivery time due to made-to-order process

Finding the perfect firm mattress can be a tall order, but the hunt may be over. Our panel, especially those who prefer a firm feel, has nothing but praise for Stearns & Foster's Estate Mattress. This style contains a complex, two-in-one coil system for premium support along with a thoughtful, detail-oriented design. It's available both with and without a pillowtop and you can upgrade to the Lux Estate for an even more extravagant experience.

Who it's best for: Stomach sleepers, shoppers with heavier body weights or anyone who prefers a firm mattress. It's also ideal for in-store shoppers who prefer scoping out different models in person at their local mattress store before purchasing.

Tester notes: More than 150 panelists and consumer testers offered feedback on this mattress, and it earned glowing reviews for its firm feel and excellent support. On top of that, it impressed our Lab experts. One called his first night sleeping on this mattress a "revelation," and said, "I love how firm and structured the mattress felt. I've been sleeping much more soundly." Note that the made-to-order format does mean it could take longer than other mattresses to arrive and we have experienced some shipping delays when ordering from Stearns & Foster. But many told us it was worth the wait.

Best in a Box

Bear Elite Hybrid

Elite Hybrid

Pros

  • Pressure-relieving zones throughout
  • Users report improved sleep quality
  • Ergonomic layout promotes spinal alignment

Cons

  • Our experts couldn't verify the brand's energy-recovery claims

Waiting around for a mattress delivery is often the last thing you want to do, especially when you need your mattress now instead of in 10 to 15 business days. Luckily, this hybrid mattress arrives in two to five business days and comes compressed in a box, so you can set it up at a time that's convenient for you. It's a newer release than our other picks, but it impressed our experts with its comfortable and effective ergonomic design and has outperformed other high-end mattresses in our tests. This model features targeted support or pressure relief in five key areas for personalized comfort and spinal alignment.

Who it's best for: Shoppers who want a comfortable luxury mattress without fear of shipping delays. It's well-suited for side and back sleepers, people suffering from back pain and anyone who has struggled to find a truly comfortable mattress.

Tester notes: While zonal support may sound too good to be true, Bear's ergonomic layout proved effective in our evaluations. Testers gave it top scores across the board, praising its positive impact on their sleep. One noted, "It feels like my entire body is being supported, regardless of my position," and another called it "nothing short of amazing." Just note that Bear makes some claims about using recovery-promoting materials that we couldn't verify in our research, but we still stand behind this mattress for its exceptional comfort.

Purple RestorePlus Hybrid Mattress

RestorePlus Hybrid Mattress
Now 13% Off
Credit: Purple

Pros

  • Elastic grid is squishy yet supportive
  • Testers consistently tell us it sleeps cool
  • Optional free in-home setup

Cons

  • May take longer to ship

Most mattresses you'll find on the market use foam or latex, but Purple's models stand out for their unique material and bouncy feel. Each mattress uses the brand's GelFlex Grid, an elastic top layer that proves both breathable and supportive. This results in an inherently airy quality with extra ventilation that hot sleepers will appreciate. On top of that, the squishy grid feels both supportive and pressure-relieving, for a texture that falls in between a foam and a latex bed.

Who it's best for: Side or stomach sleepers who sleep hot or suffer from night sweats or anyone in search of a more breathable mattress. It's also great for couples who want a bed with good motion isolation or those who are tired of the same old mattress feel.

Tester notes: Purple's mattresses have a truly one-of-a-kind texture that's hard to fully explain, but one analyst who's tried this new model describes it as having "the springy texture of latex with the pressure-relieving and cradling feel of memory foam and the breathability of an innerspring mattress." To summarize, it combines several of the best characteristics from a slew of mattress types. The caveat is that some reviewers reported that the delivery took longer than they expected. Delivery may take from two weeks to five weeks, especially if you opt for the complimentary white-glove delivery.

Mattress height: 13 in. | Firmness levels: Soft, Firm | Available sizes: Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Split King, California King | Materials: Elastic GelFlex grid, foam and coils (hybrid) | Trial period: 100 days

Pros

  • Top praise from users with back pain
  • Several foam layers for cushioning pressure relief
  • Retains support throughout use

Cons

  • Very heavy for a boxed model, according to testers

If you're suffering from any kind of joint pain, the right mattress can make all the difference in easing your discomfort. This model is designed for just that: It's 15 inches tall and combines several layers of foam on top of coils in order to cradle your pressure points without sacrificing support. And it's proved effective, earning top praise for its excellent pressure relief from dozens of testers and survey respondents with back and hip pain.

Who it's made for: Shoppers struggling with hip pain, back pain, pregnancy-related pain and sciatica, or anyone in search of a little more pressure relief.

Tester notes: While everyone's joint pain is different, we've gotten positive feedback from many users who have back and hip pain and swear this mattress actually made a difference. Several shared that it "cushions pressure points" and appreciated how the foam "bounces back to retain its support even when changing positions." In fact, one survey respondent even said that while she's had on-and-off back pain for more than 20 years, she hasn't experienced any during her first year of sleeping on this mattress. Just note that several owners found it heavier than other boxed mattresses they've owned due to the tall profile.

Sleep Number Climate360 Smart Bed

Climate360 Smart Bed

Credit: Sleep Number

Pros

  • Temperature control in targeted areas
  • Customizable firmness
  • Included adjustable base

Cons

  • Mandatory in-home setup with fee

While some mattresses allow you to choose from multiple firmness levels before purchase, Sleep Number beds are famous for letting you customize the firmness level to your liking at any time. This new cutting-edge model goes beyond that, allowing you to control both the firmness and temperature for true personalization along with the bed position, thanks to the included adjustable base. Just note that Sleep Number offers free delivery but requires a mandatory in-home setup fee of $249.

Who it's best for: Shoppers who are looking for all the bells and whistles and then some, and those who are willing to splurge for complete control of their sleeping surface.

For those who like the adjustability but are on the fence about the high cost and temperature control, the brand's i8 Smart Bed offers similar firmness control with a top layer of foam that's infused with ceramic to draw heat away from your body.

Tester notes: The price is undeniably high (on top of a mandatory setup fee), but the mattress more than delivers on its promises. When one of our experts personally tested this model, she was blown away by the temperature control settings that offered multiple temperatures and targeted control. Aside from that, the bed allows for a "set it and forget it" approach, giving you the option to create a routine. The caveat is that this fine-tuned control requires the use of an app and Wi-Fi, making it difficult to disconnect from technology before bed.

  • Testers gave high scores for edge support
  • Thoughtful design
  • Tester favorite

Cons

  • Runs firm compared to brand's rating
  • Mandatory in-home setup with fee

With 17 different layers, this luxury mattress from Avocado uses an impressive list of organic materials, from GOLS-certified organic latex to GOTS-certified organic wool, silk, hemp and cotton. Like many luxury mattresses, the price tag is high, but this one is tailored for long-lasting comfort, featuring a latex layer with three strategic zones and a coil layer with five zones for true ergonomic support.

Plus, it's offered in a crowd-pleasing medium firmness and decadent plush firmness, making it a great option for couples as well as side or back sleepers. Note that there is a mandatory setup fee.

Who it's best for: Eco-conscious shoppers who prefer organic materials over memory foam or anyone who enjoys the floating, cloud-like feel of latex.

One highlighted the bed's balanced feel that provided both comfort and support, and testers commended its excellent edge support. Credit: Naturepedic

Pros

  • Choose from five firmness options on each side of the bed
  • Modular design provides good motion isolation
  • Certified organic materials

Cons

  • Cumbersome unboxing and setup process

Have a different firmness preference or sleep position than your partner? This mattress has a modular design so you can pick from five different firmness levels for each side of the bed. And if you still can't get comfortable, Naturepedic gives you 100 days to exchange your firmness level if it's not a good fit. Because of its customizable nature, assembly is a bit more hands-on. The layers come separately and you'll have to stack them inside the encasement yourself, but the easy-access zipper makes things easier.

Who it's best for: Couples who never agree on the same firmness level when mattress shopping and shoppers who prefer to buy a GOTS- and GOLS-certified mattress.

Tester notes: Couples who slept on this model told us they loved the motion isolation offered by the separate fills. One even shared that she couldn't feel her partner move at all at night. Our testers gave the mattress high scores across the board, highlighting the contouring feel of the bed around key areas like the shoulders and hips. The caveat is that the comfort comes with a cumbersome setup — you'll need to unbox each layer separately — but our reviewers found it worth the effort.

How we test luxury mattresses

double line break

At the Good Housekeeping Textiles Lab, we've been testing home products (including mattresses and more) for over a century. Each year, our analysts work with at-home consumer testers to evaluate mattresses, from initial setup to long-term performance.

We comb through tester surveys while researching materials and construction, making sure to leverage our technical expertise and scientific backgrounds. We also vet the brand's reputation and mattress certifications, prioritizing user experience above all. In the past year alone, we've tested over 150 mattresses.

Plus, we routinely survey our larger tester panel to get in-depth feedback on the mattresses they already own. We most recently surveyed more than 10,000 mattress owners for more insight into what makes the best bed.

Here are some aspects we consider when evaluating mattresses:

Jill Sollazzo
  • Ease of ordering and delivery: Survey respondents rate and comment on how easy it was to buy the mattress, how quickly it arrived and any issues that came up during the purchasing process.
  • Ease of setup: Users share how easy the mattress delivery and setup process was, whether DIY or white-glove delivery, plus whether or not the mattress took shape quickly.

  • Firmness rating: We ask testers to share their opinion on the firmness level. Even though most brands specify a firmness, we want to make sure it feels that way in real life — especially when the brand claims it'll feel soft.
  • Comfort and support: Respondents provide scores for comfort, support and satisfaction at the start of their review and satisfaction over an extended period of time.
  • Temperature: We ask whether respondents stayed at a comfortable body temperature throughout the night on the bed, so we can note whether any cooling features were observed.

  • Edge support: Testers also rate whether or not the perimeter of the bed sinks in under their weight. Brands sometimes claim their mattresses offer edge support, but sometimes users don't feel it.
  • Perceived sleep quality: Users weigh in on whether they felt the mattress affected their sleep quality. They also share whether or not they felt sore and have the opportunity to compare their current model to ones they've used in the past.
  • Additional feedback: Testers also share any specific likes, dislikes and further comments about their experiences.
