Setting up a smart home may feel overwhelming at first, but it can be extremely powerful to have this level of control at your fingertips. When it comes to smart devices, we're no stranger to popular fitness trackers (like smart watches or smart rings) or appliances (hello...smart air fryers?), but in the past few years, the smart bed space has been the one to watch. These beds, including both smart mattresses and adjustable bases, offer you more bells and whistles than you can imagine from firmness control to sleep tracking — one even has a built-in AC.
At the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab, our scientists scoured through hundreds of popular mattresses and analyzed survey feedback from 10,000 mattress owners. In the past few years, we've tested 201 mattresses (and counting) with hundreds of at-home consumer testers. To find the best smart mattresses and beds, I've scoured the web, reviewing materials, designs and features and leveraging my background in materials science and engineering. I've personally assessed all of these models firsthand and worked with at-home consumer testers, including our Media and Tech Lab experts, to gain insight on the user experience.
Sleep Number p6 Mattress

Pros
Customizable firmness
High praise from real users
Earned the Good Housekeeping Seal
Cons
Need to pay for delivery
Height: 11 in. | Trial period: 100 days | Delivery: $249 for full-service setup
WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Couples, especially ones who don't agree on firmness level. It's also great for those who aren't sure what firmness level they prefer and want the ability to change it at any time.
Sleep Number's smart beds are some of the best you'll find. Each one allows you to customize the firmness level of each side of the bed and comes equipped with sleep tracking that's embedded within the mattress. The p6 isn't the most advanced model they carry, but it's performed well in our tests and comes at a more attainable price. Based on tester feedback, it's especially good for couples with different sleep positions, body types or firmness preferences.
HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS:
✔️ Adjustable firmness: The smart mattress allows you to customize the firmness level of each side of the bed from 1 to 100. There's also biometric sensors, which seamlessly adapt to keep you at your preferred firmness all night long. One recent tester ultimately settled on a firmer feel than her past mattresses and reported, "my body has appreciated the extra support."
✔️ Sleep tracking: Thanks to the sensors embedded within the mattress, you can easily access stats in the accompanying app (e.g. how long you've slept, how long it takes you to fall asleep, etc.) as well as guidance on how to improve your sleep quality. One of our testers shared, "The app is super informative and has given me a lot of insights into my sleep patterns and even my circadian rhythm."
✔️ Setup process: While you'll need to pay an added fee for setup and delivery, users described the process as "smooth and quick," and called the delivery personnel "very friendly and helpful." Sleep Number beds perform best on their bases, especially if you want one with adjustable positions, but you can pair this with an existing bed frame.
✔️ Comfort and support: While it's definitely a splurge, users have consistently told us it was worth the investment. Over 300 panelists and testers reported improved sleep quality. One said, "there is no comparison,” while a few others called it a game changer for their overall health and well-being.
OTHER MODELS: For hot sleepers, I'd recommend the i8 Smart Bed instead. It uses a ceramic-infused gel foam layer to help draw away heat from the body. For those iffy on the price, I'd consider the c2 Smart Bed: It uses less foam for comfort but offers the same adjustability. All three models have earned the Good Housekeeping Seal.
Pros
Anti-snore mode
Built-in sound bar
Adjustable lumbar support
Cons
Sleep tracker can be inconsistent at first, according to testers
Height: Zero clearance (4 in.) or adjustable from 7 to 16 in. at 3-in. increments | Warranty: 25-year limited warranty | Delivery: Free in-home setup
WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Shoppers who want all the bells and whistles, including sleep tracking and automatic anti-snore adjustments without having to purchase a new mattress. It's also an excellent choice for back pain sufferers needing extra lower back support.
This smart bed has it all: On-demand lumbar support, a built-in soundbar, targeted massage zones and more. Like any adjustable bed base, you can adjust the head and foot into both preprogrammed positions or customize your own. Plus, it's compatible with most bed frames, so you can slide it inside for a more polished look.
HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS:
✔️ Adjustability: This base blew away both our testers and analysts with its smart features and well-thought-out design. They noted that the base moved quickly and smoothly to change position, either via remote or app. One said, "It lifts me up from lying flat to a seated position in seconds."
✔️ Sleep tracking: With the app, you also can connect the bed to your voice assistant, track your sleep quality over time and easily check the temperature, humidity and air quality of the room. On the downside, some testers reported that the sleep tracker can be inconsistent at first, but improved over time with more use.
✔️ Lumbar support: After reviewing several adjustable beds, I think the most game-changing component of Tempur-Pedic's is the lumbar support. Take it from Senior Analyst Olivia Lipski: "I love being able to adjust the lumbar support since my lower back is starting to hurt [from pregnancy], and this gives me the support I need."
✔️ Anti-snore mode: If you or your partner snore at night, you can use the anti-snore mode: The bed will vibrate or automatically raise the headboard if it detects snoring, moving your upper body into an inclined position to relieve pressure on your airway. Our testers were impressed, especially as anti-snore functionality isn't a common component of most smart beds.
✔️ Speakers: The built-in soundbar is designed for white noise, but our testers liked using it for movies and music too. One shared, "When I get ready for the day or not, my phone can easily connect to the bed base to play my favorite songs, which is so silly but a lot of fun."
RELATED: The Best Adjustable Beds
Pros
More than 50 adjustable firmness levels
Top-tested mattress brand
365-day trial period
Cons
No sleep tracking
Height: 13 in. | Firmness: Adjustable | Trial period: 365 days | Delivery: Complimentary white-glove delivery
WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Users (including couples with different preferences) who want the flexibility of firmness control with the feel of a traditional mattress.
Saatva is a favorite brand among our panelists and product experts for its high-quality mattresses, free white-glove delivery and top-notch customer service. The Solaire comes with 50 firmness levels to choose from, made possible with built-in air chambers and a convenient remote, but it still feels like a traditional mattress.
HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS:
✔️ Adjustable firmness: You can pick from 50 different firmness levels for each side of a bed. Our users liked the variety of options and the remote, but some wished there was an accompanying app.
✔️ Versatile design: Beyond its smart features, it feels like an elevated, classic mattress: It has components like a cotton pillow top with layers of memory foam and latex. We also like that you can interchange the foam and latex layers for a more contouring or responsive feel.
✔️ Sleep tracking: The caveat here is that this is the only smart mattress on our list without some form of sleep tracking.
✔️ Comfort and support: Our panel members and testers were impressed by the customizability, from firmness level to texture. One tester reported, "I share this bed with my husband, and for the first time, he fell asleep on his back and slept peacefully through the night without moving or rolling around." She also praised the motion isolation and pressure relief of the memory foam layer and said it felt more responsive than past foam beds she's tried.
✔️ Generous trial period: We like that it can be used on just about any type of existing bed base, and the brand offers a generous year-long trial, so you have ample time to try it out risk-free.
Pros
Fits most mattresses up to 16 inches
Heating and cooling capabilities
Optional adjustable base
Cons
Some testers disliked how the cover changed the feel of their bed
Cost may vary depending on plan
Height: Compatible with mattresses from 10 in. to 16 in. | Trial period: 30 days | Delivery: Free shipping for DIY setup
WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Hot sleepers or couples who need personalized temperature control.
If you're a hot sleeper or perpetually cold at night, it can be tough to get a good night's rest, but Eight Sleep's innovative Pod covers your mattress so you can choose your preferred temperature for each side of the bed from 55º F to 110º F. We like the Pod 5 Core, which includes the Pod (a mattress cover and hub you fill with water), but you can pay extra for the Pod 5 Ultra, which includes an adjustable base.
HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS:
✔️ Adjustable temperature: In our evaluations, the brand's temperature-control features lived up to their claims, and our testers were impressed by how quickly the bed would cool down or heat up. One of our product experts noted that while she's typically a hot sleeper, she "didn't wake up sweaty once throughout the night." Plus, with the Pod 4, we haven't had to refill the hub in two months. For an added monthly cost, you can opt for the Autopilot plan, which curates routines based on your sleep data.
✔️ Sleep tracking: Others liked being able to set the temperature from anywhere via the app, which shares insights on your best sleeping temperature and how your body temperature fluctuates during the night. It'll take some time to find your perfect routine, but our testers said this was worth the time and effort.
✔️ Extra features: There's a silent alarm that vibrates and changes the temperature to help you wake up. The optional base also offers snoring mitigation: If it detects snoring, it'll slightly incline the head to relieve pressure on your airway.
✔️ Comfort: Our testers had mixed opinions when it came to the texture: Some barely noticed a difference in the overall feel of their beds, while others disliked the change and said they could feel the tiny water tubes on top. Still, they agreed it was a small price to pay. Another appreciated how quiet the newest iteration was. She said, "I’m pretty sensitive to noises ... Thankfully you can’t hear a thing, not even the water swishing around."

Best high-end smart beds on the market

While we've highlighted our best-tested picks above, it would be remiss not to mention some of the most exciting new innovations in the smart bed space.
Pros
Adjustable firmness
Premium temperature control
Includes smart base
Cons
Very high cost
Height: 13 in. | Trial period: 100 days | Delivery: Free in-home delivery and mattress disposal
WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Shoppers looking for a smart bed with both firmness and temperature control. It's best for couples with different preferences who will use both cooling and heating functions.
In 2022, Sleep Number launched its top-of-the-line smart bed, the Climate360, which allows for precise temperature control (for up to 30 degrees) and firmness control for each side of the bed. It comes fitted with their premium adjustable base and offers foot warming, a rare feature in smart beds.
So far, it lives up to its promises of customizable temperature and firmness level, though we've had some Wi-Fi-related connectivity snags along the way.
HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS:
✔️ Adjustable temperature: What sets this model apart from other Sleep Number beds is the temperature control, with cooling and heating up to 15 degrees. Our testers found it easy to adjust the temperature and liked how they could set a routine for the night. One praised the customization and highlighted how she could choose to warm her core, her feet or both while her husband opted for cooling on his side.
✔️ Adjustable base: This bed includes a base for head and foot articulation plus added features like a partner snore mode, which raises the head when it detects snoring. The base moves smoothly into different positions, though it isn't completely silent.
✔️ Comfort and support: Our testers liked that it feels like a standard, comfy Sleep Number bed. It still offers the trusted firmness control (from 1 to 100) and comes with the same sleep tracking capabilities.
OTHER MODELS: The brand recently released the ClimateCool smart bed, which cools up to 15 degrees, at a lower cost. This performed well in our tests, though our testers noticed it ran warm compared to a typical foam mattress without the cooling control.
Pros
Premium temperature control
Includes smart base
Foam adapts precisely to your body
Cons
Only available in one firmness level
Height: 13 in. | Trial period: 90 days | Delivery: Free in-home delivery and mattress disposal
WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Users who want temperature control with a feature-rich adjustable base. It's best for those who prefer a medium-firm feel, including back and stomach sleepers.
Last year, Tempur-Pedic unveiled their most innovative smart mattress yet: the ActiveBreeze. It combines the brand's best-selling mattress, the LuxeBreeze Hybrid, with its ProSmart adjustable base (our pick for the best smart bed). Beyond that, it offers temperature control (up to 30 degrees) using fans within the base, which quietly circulate warm or cool air through the hybrid coils like a built-in AC.
It's impressed us with its cooling and heating, though we wish it came in more than one firmness level (Medium).
HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS:
✔️ Adjustable temperature: While the fans aren't silent, the heating and cooling controls are impressive. Textiles Lab Analyst Amanda Constantine says, "It's not just cool to the touch like other 'cooling' beds. It truly keeps me cooler as I sleep. As soon as I get in bed and turn the cooling system on, I can feel the air flowing through the mattress and am immediately hit with a cooling sensation."
✔️ Adjustable base: The base includes a slew of premium features, like the built-in soundbar, adjustable lumbar support, snore detection mode and targeted massage, which are rare for most adjustable beds.
✔️ Comfort and support: Temper-Pedic stands out for its top-notch memory foam, which slowly adapts to your body for precise support and offers excellent motion isolation. Our testers found the bed fairly firm, giving it top scores for support. Still, we wish it came in more than one firmness level as one side-sleeping tester deemed it too firm.

How we test smart beds and smart mattresses

To find the best smart mattresses and beds available, our team of expert scientists and engineers have:
✔️ Researched hundreds of new models each year, diving deep into the details around materials, design, customer service and online reviews.
✔️ Surveyed more than 10,000 readers on our GH survey panel, analyzing over 170,000 answers to questions about the mattresses they own.
✔️ Sent over 200 mattresses to hundreds of consumer testers to review at home, both short and long term, in the past few years.
✔️ Reviewed company-provided lab data (especially related to temperature and cooling) and firsthand user experiences from our own surveying. We also consider the claims to see whether any brands may be overpromising on performance.
✔️Leveraged our backgrounds in fiber science, materials engineering and consumer science to assess everything from materials and structure to brand reputation.
✔️ Interviewed dozens of medical professionals and kept up with relevant sleep studies.
✔️ Visited dozens of mattress factories and showrooms, interviewing everyone from CEOs to in-house product experts.
What we consider

Here are some factors we look at and consider to determine the best smart mattresses and beds:

✔️ Ordering and delivery: We ask panelists to rate how easy the mattress was to order, whether online or in-store, and how quickly it arrived. They also have the option to share any potential problems that occurred during this process and if those issues were resolved.
✔️ Setup: Users give their opinions on the setup process, whether at-home setup or white-glove delivery, including how long it took their mattress to take proper shape once unwrapped or assemble their base.
✔️ Adjustability/firmness level: Users share their experiences with adjusting the firmness or position of the bed for adjustable smart mattresses and bed bases. For smart mattresses without the option of adjustable firmness levels, users rate the mattress on its firmness, and our analysts compare this information to the brand's claims.

✔️ Comfort and support: Users score the mattress on overall comfort, support and how well they personally liked sleeping on them, both initially and over an extended period. They also share qualitative feedback on how well the bed has held up over time.
✔️ Temperature regulation: We ask all users, including hot sleepers and those who suffer from night sweats, to comment on how comfortable their body temperature remained while sleeping on the mattress.
✔️ Sleep quality: Users note whether the mattress impacted their sleep quality and if they woke up feeling more or less sore over time. Our respondents then give the mattress an overall satisfaction score and compare it with any previous beds they've slept on.

✔️ Edge support: Reviewers tell us how the edges of the mattress perform under their weight or other pressure.
✔️ Sleep-tracking insights: Testers share whether they felt the sleep tracking provided by the smart mattress was accurate and relayed data well immediately and over time.
✔️ Additional feedback: Panelists and users have the opportunity to share any specific likes, dislikes and additional comments concerning their user experience, from setup to long-term use.
What to keep in mind when shopping for smart beds and smart mattresses

Choosing the best smart bed or smart mattress can feel daunting, especially when every option online seems to offer the same features in different packaging. Here are some things to think about to help narrow down what's most important to you for your next smart bed purchase:
✔️ Your budget: If you're looking to invest in an entirely new bed, you may benefit from a full sleep system — i.e. a smart bed — that has both a smart mattress and an adjustable or smart base. If you're just looking to customize your comfort level, you may be better off buying a smart mattress that can adjust its temperature or firmness or an adjustable smart base that can provide sleep tracking.
✔️ Adjustable firmness levels: Being able to adjust the firmness of your bed can be life-changing, especially for couples who disagree on firmness levels, since each person can control their half of the smart mattress. However, if you and your sleeping partner don't have those issues and haven't had problems with finding your best firmness level, it might not be as important of a feature.
✔️ Temperature control: If you're a hot sleeper, cooling mattresses can feel more like a necessity than a luxury. While some smart mattresses offer unique temperature control, it can cost extra, so think about whether being able to adjust your sleeping temperature is essential to you. For comfort, some smart mattresses contain memory foam, which tends to retain heat, so those who overheat at night should opt for a bed with cooling technology, such as copper particles, gel or phase change material (PCM) infused in the foam. Other styles may offer temperature control, but consider whether you need both cooling and warming.
✔️ Sleep tracking: Being able to track your sleep for insights on how to improve your sleep quality seems essential to the very concept of a smart mattress. If you're interested in learning more about your sleep stages, take note of what's offered by a mattress.
✔️ Smart-home compatibility: Not every smart mattress or smart base will be compatible with a voice assistant, such as Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. If full integration with your smart home is important to you, check to see if the bed is compatible with your desired smart home device.
✔️ Remote vs. app control: Most smart mattresses have some sort of remote control, whether physical or accessible via smartphone app. Some users may prefer having one option over the other — or both for easy accessibility. Consider which method you would prefer using more frequently or which you would prefer if you need to alter the firmness at night.
Are smart mattresses worth it?

If you're after constant personalized, customizable control over aspects like the firmness or temperature of your mattress, it's worth considering investing in a smart mattress or bed, especially if you're looking to actively improve your sleep health. It's ultimately a matter of personal preference, but many users on our survey panel swear by their adjustable smart beds. Just keep in mind that they don't come cheap: Most smart mattresses are well over $3,000 for a Queen-size bed.
If you're set on buying a smart mattress but want to save money, try waiting for a holiday weekend like Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day or Thanksgiving (i.e., Black Friday and Cyber Monday). Individual mattress sites will offer discounts throughout the year, but these specific holidays are often your best bets for competitive offers across different brands.
