Whether you’re in the market for a new adjustable bed base or a proud owner, it’s crucial to find a compatible mattress to pair with it. While foam and hybrid models are the best on paper (they’re the most flexible!), it’s important that you buy a mattress you’ll like above all else. After all, we spend a third of our lives asleep, and a new mattress is a big commitment.

Our Top Pick: Tempur-Pedic’s TEMPUR-Cloud molds precisely to your body for the perfect balance of pressure relief and support for any sleeping position. It’s all-foam design is ideal for making the most out of your adjustable bed, moving seamlessly from position to position.

At the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab, we've evaluated all kinds of mattresses, considering everything from market research and assessment to consumer testing and data analysis, to find the best of the best. In recent years, we've surveyed over 10,000 mattress owners and worked with at-home consumer testers to directly evaluate hundreds of mattresses. We’ve compiled a list of our favorite compatible mattresses below, but make sure to always read the fine print on any unique limitations your adjustable base may have before purchasing.

Best Overall

Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud

Pros

  • Tempur-Pedic foam at a lower price
  • Adapts to your body shape
  • Excellent motion isolation, according to testers

Cons

  • Only one firmness level

Mattress type: Foam | Height: 10 in. | Firmness: Medium | Trial: 90 days

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Anyone looking for precise, targeted pressure relief and support. It’s great for side sleepers who struggle to find a mattress with enough give for their hips but not too much for their shoulders.

When it comes to adjustable beds, memory foam mattresses work best. They’re very flexible, so you can maximize head and foot elevation and enjoy weightless pressure-relief in the Zero Gravity position.

Tempur-Pedic makes some of the best memory foam mattresses on the market, having been one of the first pioneers in the industry. And no one does pressure relief quite like Tempur-Pedic. Its proprietary foam slowly adapts and contours perfectly to your body for precise support you have to try to believe. And while Tempur-Pedic often comes at a premium, this boxed model ships directly to your home at a more affordable price point.

USER FEEDBACK: The first time I tried the Tempur-Cloud, I was shocked by just how comfortable it felt. It seamlessly adapted to my body in every position, and I could only describe it as luxurious and dream-worthy. Our long-term testers and survey respondents agreed. Several confirmed it lived up to its name — having a "cloud-like" feel that still felt supportive.

Others also called out the motion isolation, with some sharing that they couldn't feel their partners move or get up at all while lying on the bed. Note that the bed may feel a little firm when you first lie down, but our testers found it quickly molds to your body in a "gentle way." The caveat? While the medium firmness is versatile, we wish it came in more firmness levels.

Pros

  • Memory foam cradles pressure points
  • Good balance of coils and foam
  • Higher scores than pricier models

Cons

  • Less edge support than our other picks

Mattress type: Hybrid | Height: 12 in. | Firmness: Medium | Trial: 90 days

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Price-conscious shoppers who prefer to spend under $500 without sacrificing comfort. In our surveys, younger adults gave this mattress higher scores than older individuals, due to the DIY setup and not-so-great edge support.

If you're looking for an affordable option that doesn’t skimp on quality, this hybrid mattress from Allswell surprised our testers for its luxe, hotel-like comfort and budget-friendly cost. Receiving higher scores than pricier models, this mattress has a price point that's especially impressive considering how the average cost of a Queen-size hybrid mattress last year was $2,050.

The hybrid construction combines cushiony memory foam to cradle pressure points with individually wrapped coils for added support, yet it's still malleable enough to move effortlessly with an adjustable base. Its crowd-pleasing medium firmness works well for most sleep positions, making it especially great for combination sleepers.

USER FEEDBACK: One thing about this mattress, you’d never be able to guess its price from feel alone. When lying on this mattress for the first time, I was taken aback by how comfortable and pillowy it felt. Out of 60 survey respondents, 58 agreed, highlighting its cozy feel and how well it molded to their bodies (and adjustable bases).

Users told us that while the memory foam is cradling, it's not too soft, and they were amazed at the overall quality of the mattress with one calling it "a real, plush hotel mattress, but at a fraction of the price." However, it has less edge support than our other picks.

Best Innerspring

Saatva Classic Mattress

Classic Mattress
Now 15% Off
Credit: Mike Garten

Pros

  • Top-rated by long-term users
  • Good edge support
  • Free white-glove delivery

Cons

  • 14.5" version is not compatible with adjustable bed bases
  • Runs firm

Mattress type: Innerspring | Height: 11.5 in. (14.5-in. model is not compatible with adjustable beds) | Firmness: Plush, Luxury Firm, Firm | Trial: 365 days

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Shoppers who want the breathability and support of a traditional innerspring mattress along with free white-glove delivery and mattress removal.

If you prefer the feel of a traditional mattress and want one for your adjustable bed, this innerspring model from Saatva is one of the best mattresses you can buy. Innerspring mattresses offer excellent support, but they’re usually not the most flexible on an adjustable base. Luckily, Saatva’s Classic Mattress fared well in consumer tests, easily moving with the head and foot.

It comes in three firmness levels with other perks like free white-glove delivery, mattress removal and a 365-day trial, though there is a $99 pick-up fee. Note that only the 11.5-inch version is compatible with an adjustable base.

USER FEEDBACK: This model consistently gets top scores and glowing reviews among our panelists, including some long-term owners who prefer it above any other mattress that they’ve owned. Compared to other innerspring mattresses I’ve tried, the edge support on this one is phenomenal. I’d recommend this if you prefer solid, firm support over the feel of memory foam but you should avoid it if you want a soft, pillowy top. It tends to run firm in our evaluations, so it’s unideal for those who need a plusher feel.

Survey respondents highlighted Saatva’s customer service too, praising how easy it was to address issues during setup or for when they had questions during the purchasing process. Our testers and panelists also praised the breathability and described it as well-made; dozens even called it the "best mattress ever."

Best Adjustable Bed and Mattress Combo

Sleep Number 360 p6 Smart Bed

GH Seal
360 p6 Smart Bed
Now 13% Off
Credit: Sleep Number

Pros

  • Earned the Good Housekeeping Seal
  • Individual firmness control
  • Optional sleep tracking

Cons

  • Requires a Sleep Number base
  • Pricey

Mattress type: Adjustable | Height: 11 in. | Firmness: Adjustable | Trial: 100 days (mattress only; base is final sale)

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Shoppers looking for a seamless, all-in-one mattress and adjustable bed setup. It's also great for couples with different sleep preferences or those who aren't sure what firmness level they prefer and want the ability to change it at any time.

The top mattress shopping concern from users in our surveys is firmness level, so an adjustable mattress like this one is game-changing. Not only can you customize your bed to any firmness level, but couples who have different preferences can select individual settings for each side, thanks to the built-in, adjustable air chambers. It also automatically adjusts to keep you at your preferred firmness all night, and you can opt for optional sleep tracking.

Sleep Number mattresses need to be paired with a Sleep Number base, and the all-in-one setup has proved seamless in our tests. You can choose from three adjustable bases. All have head-raising capabilities and motion-activated under-bed lighting, but the pricier models come with features like foot elevation and even feet warming for those with frequently cold toes.

USER FEEDBACK: The cost is high, but users consistently tell us it's well worth the investment, with over 300 users on our survey panel giving it high scores. One even told us, "I was initially hesitant because of the cost, but as soon as I laid on it, it changed my mind." Others shared that they wished they hadn't waited so long to make the splurge. Sleep Number carries many models, but the p6 is our favorite because of its approachable comfort and functionality, which comes without too many specialty features.

One of our GH Institute Lab directors sleeps on a Sleep Number bed and swears by it, saying that being able to change the firmness has been life-changing for both her and her husband. Plus, Sleep Number mattresses are backed by the prestigious Good Housekeeping Seal, so you can trust that it's been heavily vetted by our Lab experts.

Purple Mattress

Mattress

Pros

  • Excellent breathability, according to testers
  • Elastic grid is squishy yet supportive
  • Good motion isolation

Cons

  • Some users experienced shipping delays

Mattress type: Foam with polymer grid | Height: 9.25 in. | Firmness: Medium Firm | Trial: 100 days

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Hot sleepers in search of a more breathable mattress, couples looking for a bed with good motion isolation or people who are tired of the same old mattress feel who want to try something new.

Most mattresses use memory foam, latex or coils, but Purple stands out for its unique GelFlex Grid, an elastic top layer that feels squishy yet surprisingly firm. It provides a balance of support and pressure relief while offering excellent motion isolation and breathability.

Unlike memory foam, the polymer grid won’t sink in under your weight, but it still cradles you. When used on an adjustable base, the grid flexes easily and provides more targeted support than ever. The base model is coil-free, adding to its flexibility, but the brand also has hybrid variations with one layer of foam and a layer of coils for innerspring support and more airflow.

USER FEEDBACK: The first time I slept on a Purple mattress, I knew it had to feel amazing on an adjustable bed. The grid itself is already designed to provide support in key areas while cradling away your pressure points based on its structure, but on an adjustable base, that’s amplified even further. In zero gravity position (elevated head and foot), I found the weightless sensation and lumbar support exquisite.

Purple loyalists on our panel describe this model as "the perfect combination of soft and firm." One told us, "It's springy and conforms to my body while still being supportive." Other users remarked that they feel like they're "sleeping on air" and "floating in every sleeping position." Plus, several highlighted the breathability; one even called it "too cold" in the winter. However, some users experienced shipping delays.

Saatva Solaire Adjustable Mattress

Solaire Adjustable Mattress
Now 7% Off
Credit: Saatva

Pros

  • Still feels like a traditional mattress
  • 50 adjustable firmness levels
  • Free white-glove delivery

Cons

  • No sleep tracking

Mattress type: Adjustable | Height: 13 in. | Firmness: Adjustable | Trial: 365 days

WHO IT'S B EST FOR: Users who aren't sure how firm they want their bed to feel and want the ability to try out different firmness levels (or those who know exactly how firm they'd like it). It's also great for couples with different sleeping styles or firmness preferences.

Thanks to the brand's high-quality mattresses, free white-glove delivery and mattress removal, Saatva continues to impress our product experts and panelists. The Solaire is different from the brand’s popular innerspring: It has built-in air chambers that inflate to 50 different firmness levels via a handy remote. But beyond its adjustability, this model is truly innovative — few mattresses on the market combine adjustable firmnesses with a traditional mattress like this one.

On top of the air chambers, it has layers of memory foam and latex, so you get the comfort and support of a traditional mattress. Plus, there’s an indulgent organic cotton pillow-top. The drawback is that there’s no sleep tracking, which you’d expect at the price point, and we’ve seen it rise in price more than other adjustable smart mattresses. Be aware that you'll need to pair the Upper-Flex Queen or King styles with Saatva's adjustable base.

USER FEEDBACK: Our panelists and consumer testers loved the flexibility to adjust each side of the bed to their preferred firmness for sleeping or lounging, especially with the help of an adjustable base for optimal relaxation. Users praised the construction and quality of the mattress calling it "well-made" with one saying, "This is the best mattress I have ever owned."

Best Organic Latex

Avocado Green Mattress

Green Mattress
Now 15% Off
Credit: Mike Garten

Pros

  • GOTS and GOLS certified organic
  • Comfortable and firm support
  • Ergonomic design promotes spinal alignment

Cons

  • Pillow-top costs extra

Mattress type: Latex hybrid | Height: 11, 13 or 15.5 in. | Firmness: Firm, Medium, Plush | Trial: 365 days

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Eco-conscious consumers who prefer organic materials to memory foam, latex lovers who enjoy the springy, floating feel or those looking for a mattress that won't sink in under their weight.

The Avocado Green Mattress is one of the best available. It's made with quality materials and uses production processes certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS). Constructed with pocketed coils and layers of latex and wool, this mattress is perfect for anyone who prefers to avoid memory foam and synthetic materials.

Unlike foam, latex has a springy feel that “bounces back” to provide support. This means it won’t sink in under your weight. It tends to be firmer than foam, and this model uses Dunlop latex for its firm and medium options, which feels denser than airy Talalay latex. The ergonomic design promotes spinal alignment, and users who prefer a firmer feel like it most in our tests, but you can opt for the medium or plush firmness for an added fee.

USER FEEDBACK: I find that latex hybrids are a great option for those who prefer to feel like they’re sleeping “on top of” their mattresses rather than “in” them. This one from Avocado is the best latex mattress we’ve tested; it’s well-made (complete with hand-tufted buttons) and constantly receives glowing feedback from all kinds of users. Many (myself included) especially appreciate the brand’s commitment to sustainability and carbon neutrality without compromising on comfort or quality.

Our testers loved the springy and supportive feel. "It is unbelievably comfortable," said one user. "I like that it is supportive, and I don't wake up in pain as I have with other mattresses." Others liked how it evenly distributed their body weight, resulting in a weightless, floating feel.

The issue with this one is that because latex is less yielding than typical memory foam (though better than innerspring models), you won’t be able to maximize the incline of your head and feet.

Best Soft

Puffy Lux Hybrid

Lux Hybrid
Now 49% Off
Credit: Mike Garten

Pros

  • Plush yet supportive
  • Ideal for side sleepers
  • Excellent scores for sleep quality

Cons

  • Testers and panelists didn't notice any cooling effects

Mattress type: Hybrid | Height: 12 in. | Firmness: Medium Plush | Trial: 101 days

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Side sleepers and back pain sufferers in search of a soft yet supportive mattress or anyone who likes sleeping on a plush, cushiony bed without sinking in too much.

This plush mattress from Puffy feels both soft and supportive, according to our testers. With several layers of pressure-relieving foam and contouring coils, it delivers an indulgent, cloud-like surface without sinking in too much under pressure, making it ideal for side sleepers.

Hybrid mattresses are typically good choices for adjustable beds, and this is no exception. What’s notable about the Puffy Lux Hybrid is how the brand has updated it several times in the past few years (most recently in 2022 and 2024) based on consumer feedback. The newest model has improved edge support with firmer support underneath and a soft, cushioned foam top.

USER FEEDBACK: I find that hybrids fall into two classes; foam-oriented and more pillow-top-esque. This model is definitely more foamy than pillowy, but it won’t sink dramatically. Our testers, especially those that sleep on their side, liked the overall soft feel and how it cradled and conformed to their bodies without sinking.

"This mattress feels like I'm sleeping on a cloud, but I still feel supported," said one tester. "I don't feel like I'm sinking when sitting or laying on it." Other long-term owners shared that it's held up well with time and use. However, despite the gel-infused foam and other cooling materials, users didn't notice any cooling effects.

Best for Back Pain

Nolah Original 10"

On Sale
Original 10"
Now 48% Off
Credit: Mike Garten

Pros

  • Top scores for comfort and support
  • Pressure-relieving memory foam
  • High praise from testers with joint pain

Cons

  • On the shorter side

Mattress type: Foam | Height: 10 in. | Firmness: Medium | Trial: 120 days

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Users struggling with pain, like hip pain, back pain, pregnancy-related pain and sciatica. It's also a great pressure-relieving option for side sleepers.

To help ease your back or hip pain, look for a mattress that'll keep your spine in neutral alignment. This mattress from Nolah provides much-needed pressure relief at a comfortable medium firmness level. In fact, it received top praise from testers and panelists with back pain, who swore it notably eased their discomfort.

What sets it apart from other all-foam mattresses is the brand’s unique, proprietary foam: It’s injected with air at a microscopic level, making it more breathable and responsive without taking away from its pressure-relieving qualities.

USER FEEDBACK: It sounds too good to be true because, after all, there’s no one solution to everyone’s back or joint pain, but our consumer testers and panel members with chronic back and hip pain unanimously agreed that this mattress helped provide relief, and many reported less pain over time. The first time I tried this mattress, I could feel a literal weight being taken off my shoulders.

One user highlighted its comfortable feel, noting that the mattress "offers back support while still cradling pressure points." Another told us, "It has been significantly helpful in relieving back pain for my husband who has scoliosis." Still, many users reported that it took them a while to adjust to the bed because of its unique foam and some found the bed a bit short in height, depending on the height of their bed base.

Other mattresses we’ve tested

double line break

Casper’s Original Mattress was previously one of our top recommendations because of its zoned support (rare for an all-foam model) and pressure relief. The brand has since discontinued this model, but you can still find it at select retailers, like Amazon, while stock lasts. We are currently testing its replacement, The One, which skips the zoned support (but also costs a few hundred less).

The Bear Elite Hybrid is the best hybrid mattress that we’ve tested, having premium support with a pillowy top, but it’s not as yielding as most hybrids because of its whopping 14-inch height. We’re gearing up to test it on an adjustable base this month, so we’ll see if it proves us wrong.

Helix’s Midnight Luxe (and its Luxe collection in general) is one of the most popular hybrids on the market, having a versatile medium feel, but we think its 13.5-inch height is similarly concerning. We’ll see how it performs in upcoming consumer testing.

How we test mattresses for adjustable beds

double line break

We start by conducting market research: We assess materials and specifications plus any claims before vetting brands for consumer complaints. From there, we’ll then work with at-home testers, making sure each mattress and tester match in terms of sleep position and preferences. Our consumer testers set up and try out the mattress for a few weeks before providing initial feedback and once again after a longer period.

Beyond at-home testing, we also survey Good Housekeeping readers and our tester panel for additional feedback on mattresses they own. From expert impressions, consumer tester input and user feedback through our surveys, here are some of the most important factors we consider when choosing the best mattresses for adjustable beds:

✔️ Ordering & delivery: Users tell us how easy the mattress was to order and how long it took to arrive. They also share any problems with ordering or unexpected delays that occurred.

✔️ Setup: Our panelists and testers shared their setup experiences, whether self-setup or white-glove delivery, and shared whether the mattress took proper shape in a reasonable amount of time.

✔️ Compatibility: Users also provide feedback on how well the mattress fared on an adjustable base and if there were any relevant setup issues.

✔️ Firmness level: Testers rate the firmness of the mattress. This is important because sometimes the brand's reported rating doesn't align with what users feel in real use.

✔️ Edge support: Reviewers will sit on the edge of the bed and note how the mattress holds up to additional pressure.

✔️ Comfort and support: Our testers score the mattresses for comfort and support. They also rate how much they liked sleeping on it initially versus over an extended period.

✔️ Temperature regulation: Regardless of any cooling claims, we ask hot sleepers and other users to rate how comfortable their body temperature remained while sleeping on the mattress.

✔️ Sleep quality: We also ask reviewers how the mattress impacted their overall sleep quality and whether or not they woke up feeling sore. Our respondents also rate the mattress on their overall experience and then compare the mattress to other beds they've previously slept on.

✔️ Additional feedback: Reviewers let us know any specific likes or dislikes as well as any other comments they have about their user experience.

What to look for when shopping for the best mattresses for adjustable beds

double line break

Choosing a new mattress is a tough decision, especially one that works with an adjustable base. Here are some things to keep in mind as you shop:

✔️ Sleep position: The goal is to keep your spine in neutral alignment, so factoring in how you sleep can help narrow down your search.

  • Stomach sleepers should choose a firmer mattress.
  • Side sleepers are best suited to a softer surface to avoid stress on any pressure points, including your shoulders, hips and knees.
  • Back sleepers and combination sleepers fall somewhere in between and should opt for medium firmness.

✔️ Body type: Heavy people need a firmer bed for optimal support, while those with lightweight frames should opt for a softer mattress. When deciding on the right firmness level, make sure to take into account both your weight and sleep position.

✔️ Back pain: Opt for a pressure-relieving mattress with all foam or a hybrid of foam and coils if you suffer from any type of back pain. Medical experts also recommend mattresses with medium firmness for a good balance of cushioning and support.

✔️ Temperature: Hot sleepers or anyone who suffers from night sweats can benefit from a mattress with cooling properties. Memory foam tends to retain heat or sleep hot, so opt for a mattress with coils for increased breathability or additional cooling technology like copper particles, gel or phase change material (PCM) incorporated in the foam.

✔️ Trial period: It's difficult to know if a mattress is a good fit for you without sleeping on it. Luckily, most mattress companies offer trial periods, but before you buy, make sure you're aware of any return fees and the return process just in case.

✔️ Compatibility: Look for any information that explains whether the mattress is compatible with an adjustable base. Often, mattress brands with adjustable bases will list compatible mattresses under the base listing. Otherwise, most mattresses made of memory foam, latex and individually pocketed coils will be a good fit, but be sure to check with the brand if no information is listed.

✔️ Materials: While memory foam and innerspring mattresses are the most common options available on the market, there are a variety of materials used in mattresses.

  • Memory foam mattresses adapt to your body shape so it feels like your pressure points are being cradled.
  • Latex mattresses are similar to memory foam, but latex is made from rubber trees and may be used in organic mattresses.
  • Innerspring mattresses are usually firmer and have more bounce.
  • Hybrid mattresses use a combination of memory foam (or latex) with innersprings so you don't have to pick just one.
  • Adjustable mattresses have air chambers that allow you to control the mattress's firmness level.

✔️ Certifications: You might see a variety of emblems when you shop for mattresses. Here are a few of the most common certifications you'll see and what they mean:

  • CertiPUR-US: This certifies whether any foam in the mattress has been made without certain harmful chemicals and tested for low VOC emissions.
  • OEKO-TEX: The Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex shows whether any fabric component of the mattress has been tested to ensure there are no unsafe levels of known harmful chemicals.
  • GOTS: The Global Organic Textile Standard shows that the entire production process of the mattress follows strict standards. This is the gold standard for any organic mattress made of natural materials. Just be aware that GOTS only certifies entire products. This certification is commonly misused by brands who claim that only some components (e.g., an organic cotton outer cover) are certified, so you can always check the GOTS public database to be sure.
  • GOLS: The Global Organic Latex Standard is similar to GOTS, but for latex. These two organic certifications are often used together in organic mattresses and pillows.
  • GREENGUARD: An indoor air quality certification that indicates that the mattress meets chemical emission standards. There's also a GREENGUARD Gold certification, which requires products to have lower volatile organic compound (VOC) emission levels.

What type of mattress is best for adjustable bed?

double line break

You don't need a special mattress to pair with an adjustable base. You can find compatible mattresses at every firmness level and price for most materials. While adjustable air, memory foam, latex and hybrid mattresses are ideal because of the flexibility and durability of their materials, innerspring mattresses can also work well, as long as they have individually pocketed coils.

Still, it’s important to check if there are any height limitations for your adjustable bed base. Some bed bases will work with mattresses up to 16 inches, while others require models below 14 inches. We find that thinner mattresses (especially those 12 inches or below) work best in our tests.
