Smart home integration, whether in the form of smart thermostats or smart light switches, has become increasingly more common these days. And for good reason: These devices make everyday tasks easier, or sometimes even completely automated. Not to mention, they can help with privacy, security, and even lower energy bills. For instance, if you set your smart lights to turn on and off and your smart shades to lower and rise at the same time every, you can make it seem as if someone is home, even if you're away. This can help you make the most of natural light and provide insulation to keep out the heat or cold, too. And since there are no cords to get tangled in, smart blinds and shades are also a safe option if you have little kids or pets in the house. Of course, smart blinds, shades and curtains come in extra handy when you don't feel like getting up off the sofa to block the sun out of your eyes, especially if you have windows that are high up or hard to reach. These window treatments are also accessible if you or someone in your home has mobility issues.

Only thing: There are tons of different choices. Not only do you have to decide on the type (like blinds or shades), color, light-filtering level, amount of privacy and the style, but now you have to sort through various power sources, different smart home systems (such as Alexa or Google Assistant) as well as the control options. Smart blinds, shades and curtains are worth the trouble though — and the experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute Home Improvement & Outdoor Lab are here to help you find the most practical fit for your home. While we haven’t evaluated every smart blind and smart shade system in our labs, we performed home tests whenever possible to assess installation and ease-of-use in real-world conditions. Plus we have tested smart home devices of all types and also looked at online reviews in order to make our top selects.

Cons

What to look for when shopping for smart blinds or smart shades

"

✔️ Compatibility: Different smart blinds or smart shade systems are compatible with particular smart home systems, so make sure to pair them with what you already have, whether it be Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant or Apple HomeKit. If you don't have a smart home system yet, select the overall system you'd like to have in place first and then choose smart window treatments that are compatible.

✔️ Window size: Blinds and shades — smart or otherwise — have to be fitted to your window, so make sure to take careful measurements before shopping. Some smart blinds and shades are available in custom sizes so they'll fit perfectly with your window, but most of the less expensive options come in pre-set sizes.

✔️ Power source: Smart blinds are usually either battery-operated, hardwired or solar-powered. If you're looking at a battery-operated option, check the advertised battery life of a full charge. Some systems last three to six months while others only last 30 days. Some systems come with a rechargeable battery pack while others require replacements.

✔️ Ease of use: When choosing a system, it's important to think about how you want your smart blinds or shades to work for you. Do you want them set to a schedule to open and close at certain times? Do you want to control them using a Bluetooth remote? If you already have blinds or curtains you don't want to replace, you can install an automation kit like, SwitchBot or SmarterHome, depending on your existing setup.

✔️ Curtain style: Even though it's probably the first thing you think about covering your windows, shopping for curtains is something that's best saved for the end if you're considering smart home integration. That being said, if you're looking for blackout curtains or a specific color, make sure those options are available before settling on a brand.
