We've been independently researching and testing products for over 120 years. If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission. Learn more about our review process.

Lugging a heavy, awkward-to-hold beach chair after a long day in the sun can make walking through the hot sand even more tiring than it already is. Add on a beach towel, beach umbrella and a bag full of snacks, and you’re going to be breaking a sweat getting back to your car (it feels like a workout!). Luckily, there are beach chairs out there nowadays that are comfortable, durable, lightweight and, yes, easy to carry.

To find the best beach chairs, our experts in the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab evaluated different brands and types of chairs. They considered features like multiple position recline, pillows, armrests and backpack straps that make for a comfortable chair. We also sent several beach chairs to real-life testers to bring to the beach and provide feedback on their firsthand experience. Ahead, find the best beach chairs of 2025 that will last you summer after summer.

    Best Overall

Tommy Bahama Wavy Marlin Deluxe Backpack Beach Chair

    Credit: Tommy Bahama

    Pros

    • Comes with backpack straps
    • Long-lasting, quality construction
    • Comfortable to sit in

    Cons

    • Side pouch is not durable, according to some online reviewers

    Materials: Aluminum, steel shaft, polyester and wood | Weight: 7.5 lbs | Dimension: 24" x 32" x 28" | Weight capacity: 300 lbs

Tommy Bahama is a best-selling brand for all summer gear, especially beach chairs. They're a bit higher priced than other chairs, but chairs from this brand will last you a long time.

In fact, one of our GH testers was just as impressed today as he was 13 years ago when he first tried a Tommy Bahama beach chair, describing the chair as "top-notch" and "unmatched." His favorite feature was its safe-adjust arms and back, which made it super easy to recline in.

We also love that this chair folds up into a compact design with backpack straps. Made with lightweight aluminum construction and solid wooden armrests, plus a cup holder, phone holder and two zippered pouches on the back, this backpack chair is intentionally made to make bringing items to the shore much easier.

✔️ What users say: Another GH tester said they usually can't be bothered to bring a chair to the beach, but this one is "so easy to carry and comfortable to sit in" that they've been converted to a beach chair user. One drawback is some online reviewers mentioned the side pouch's stitching came undone after many uses.

A GH tester who suffers from arthritis in their knees enjoys its 17-inch height from the ground, which makes it easy to get up and down. The taller height also makes it a good choice for seniors.

    Most durable

    YETI Hondo Base Camp Chair

    Hondo Base Camp Chair
    Credit: YETI

    Pros

    • Breathable fabric
    • Quality, durable build
    • Comfortable, according to testers

    Cons

    • Heavy

    Materials: FlexGrid fabric and aluminum alloy | Weight: 16.5 lbs | Dimension: 30.1" x 24.0" x 35.0 | Weight capacity: 500 lbs

You can tell much thought went into the making of this chair: It's made of quality aluminum and breathable fabric that feels like it's guaranteed to last a long time. Plus, it supports up to 500 pounds.

The only caveat is there is no easy way to carry it unless you buy a separate Hondo carrying case. But, the weight may not be an issue if you are not taking it far. One tester said they did not have a problem carrying this chair a short distance and loved how substantial the chair felt.

YETI recently dropped a new Hondo Beach Chair that has a similar design that's even more suited for the sand. We are still testing this chair, but one of our editors said it's just as comfortable and durable as the camp chair.

✔️ What users say: "It was extremely comfortable and used breathable vented fabric in the seat, which helped keep us cool in hot Florida weather," said one tester. "The chair was sturdy, so I did not experience any wobbling like others we own." Another tester confirmed, saying, ""This beach chair felt like I was in a high-quality piece of furniture — not a flimsy beach chair!"

How we tested the best beach chairs

    linebreak

The Good Housekeeping Institute is based in New York City, but we have trustworthy GH consumer testers that live in different locations and travel to beach destinations all over the map. We sent beach chairs to these consumer testers to try them out in the real world. These testers reported back to us on the beach chair's comfort, durability, ease of use and heaviness.

Our pros in the Textiles Lab have top-notch expertise in materials and fabric. With their help, we were able to create a list of durable beach chairs that will withstand the elements from seawater and UV rays to sunscreen and sweat.

How we choose the best beach chairs

    linebreak

The best beach chair for you ultimately comes down to personal preferences. However, there are a few key features that you can keep in mind when purchasing a chair to ensure that it will make your day at the beach easier not worse:

✔️ Size: When it comes to shopping for beach chairs, our pros recommend considering the chair's height: Some people prefer being low to the sand, but if you're older or have bad knees, tall beach chairs are easier to get out of.

✔️ Weight capacity: You'll also want to consider weight capacity. Most beach chairs will support up to 250 pounds on average, but there are camping and beach chairs that claim to support up to 300 or even 500 pounds.

✔️ Materials: Beach chairs can be costly, so you'll want to be sure that you invest in a chair that won't break on you after a few uses. Our top picks include chairs that are made with aluminum alloy and durable fabrics that will withstand the elements and not rip or tear over time. Plus, you may want to consider a mesh material that will feel more breathable if your back begins to sweat in the heat.

✔️ Chair weight: When you're carrying beach chairs from the car to the sand or from a beach house to the shore, you don't want the chair to weigh a whole lot. Check the weight of the beach chair before buying it to ensure it'll be lightweight and easy to carry. We mainly recommend chairs under 10 pounds, but the YETI chair is an exception if you are willing to carry it or have a beach wagon to lug it.

✔️ Carrying straps: Speaking of carrying the beach chairs, the straps on a chair can make or break how easy it is to carry them. Some chairs have backpack-styled straps so that you can wear the chair like a backpack. This can be an issue if you typically wear a backpack to the beach rather than a tote bag for items like your wallet, phone, sunscreen, etc., but options like the Tommy Bahama Wavy Marlin Deluxe Backpack Beach Chair include zippered pouches so that you won't need another bag. Others have one singular strap to put around your shoulder (or like a cross-body strap). Some smaller chairs can even collapse into a carrying bag if you're looking for a simple, lightweight option like the Coleman Utopia Breeze Beach Chair.

✔️ Reclining positions: Many of us work at a desk all week sitting up straight, so when you go to the beach on the weekends, you're going to want to kick back and relax. Be sure to check how many different reclining positions a chair has and consider whether or not you want a chair that allows you to fully lay flat on your back or stomach.
