Waking up sweaty from a nap or a night's sleep is always unpleasant. Even if you don't run hot, chances are you have felt uncomfortable snuggling under a throw blanket during the summer. Cooling blankets can give you that cozy feel without trapping in heat, thanks to a more breathable, lightweight design and special cooling technologies.

Experts in the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab test all types of cooling bedding, including blankets. Because many brands promise cooling benefits, we vet all cooling claims to ensure you aren't being duped. During our most recent categorical test, we evaluated 68 different blankets with over a 100 consumer testers who gave feedback on comfort, feel, temperature regulation, appearance and more.

A weighted blanket can help encourage sleep and relaxation, but added weight can mean added heat. Avoid overheating with this knitted weighted blanket from Bearaby. The thick knit allows ample airflow through the blanket, so you sleep cooler. It's made with Tencel, which wicks away moisture to keep you dry and comfortable, and cotton for a cozy soft feel.

✔️ TESTER NOTES: "I like how the woven material allows for breathability while being nestled beneath it," said one tester. "I didn't overheat and wasn't cold either." All testers gave high marks for appearance, but some said it was challenging to clean as there's no cover. The brand notes the blanket may need more than one drying cycle to completely dry.

Another tester said, "I’m a super hot sleeper, and this feels cool to the touch, and the open structure makes it much more breathable than my other weighted blanket." She added, "I sleep so well under it."

    How we test cooling blankets

    double line break

At the Good Housekeeping Institute, the experts in the Textiles Lab test many different types of bedding — from cooling sheets and cooling comforters to mattress pads for hot sleepers. In our most recent blankets tests, we analyzed 68 blankets for appearance and performance properties with over a hundred at-home testers.

To determine the best cooling blanket options, I vetted each pick's cooling claims and analyzed feedback from years of rigorous testing before making these selections.

What to look for when shopping for the best cooling blanket

    double line break

✔️ Cooling technologies: Certain blankets feature cooling technologies that store and release heat to keep you at a more stable body temperature throughout the night. Look for temperature-regulating technology like Outlast or 37.5 for a proven cooler sleep.

✔️ Breathable materials: While some fabrics hold onto moisture, others wick it away to keep you sweat-free. Opt for synthetic fabrics like polyester or regenerated cellulose fibers like lyocell. Cotton holds onto moisture more, so if you love the natural feel of cotton, go with a blended material or a lightweight option.

✔️ Lightweight construction: Blankets that are designed for the winter months will be thicker and more tightly woven. For an airier feel, look for looser knits or weaves without any added bulk.

✔️ Fits your home: In the end, the best cooling blanket for you needs to fit with your home's decor and your lifestyle. Make sure to think about where you plan on using the blanket before purchasing: Is it for movie nights on the couch? Sleeping? Year-round or just summer use? Then, make sure to pick a style that has the right dimensions and construction for your needs.

✔️ Be wary of "bamboo" or "eucalyptus" claims: These types of materials are actually known as viscose, rayon or lyocell and they're fibers made from regenerated cellulose, meaning the wood pulp from different plants is dissolved in a chemical solvent before being pushed through an extruder to form fibers. Because of this chemical process, the final product doesn't contain any of the original cellulose material. Regenerated cellulose fibers can help keep you cool because of their moisture-wicking capabilities, but you shouldn't buy them just because they claim to be plant-based or natural.
