There's no material more luxurious than silk: It's a natural fiber that's incredibly smooth and offers temperature-regulating benefits. Plus, silk fabrics reduce friction, so they're gentle against the skin, and as a result, they can help to prevent bedhead and wrinkles, making silk a perfect option to wrap up in while you sleep. A complete set of silk sheets can bring your bedding game up a notch, but because silk can be expensive, it's important to be sure you're investing in quality sheets that are worth the splurge.

The Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab regularly performs extensive testing on all kinds of bed sheets of different fabrications. When we're analyzing real silk and synthetic satin fabrics in the Lab, we test for qualities like durability, smoothness, washability and moisture management using our specialized equipment. We also send silk bedding to consumer testers who sleep on it and then provide us with in-depth feedback about their experiences. The picks on our list of the best silk sheets are made of material that has performed well in Lab tests or are top-rated styles from popular brands that have rave reviews from real users.

Pros

  • Washes well
  • Soft and smooth
  • Proved strong in Lab tests

Cons

  • Hand wash recommended

You can check all the boxes for quality silk bedding with these sheets 100% Mulberry silk with an impressive 25 momme weight. These sheets proved to be strong in our Lab tests and held up well to machine washing on the delicate cycle. They also have glowing reviews from real users on Amazon, and even though they're pricey, they're actually less expensive than other silk sheet sets with similar specifications. The brand has tons of silk bedding options, including sets with matching duvet covers. For a more affordable option, the 19 momme version costs a couple hundred dollars less, but it's not quite as high quality.

Pros

  • Silk material wicks away moisture
  • Loved by testers
  • Analysts say it's luxe and smooth

Cons

  • Flat sheet not included

Silk sheet sets can cost well over $500, but if you're looking for a cheaper option (or if you know you won't use a flat sheet), try this three-piece set that comes with a fitted sheet and two pillowcases. LilySilk is one of the most popular silk brands on the Internet, and our consumer testers and Lab analysts love the brand too, describing its silk material as luxe and smooth. These sheets have a weight of 19 momme, so it wasn't the most durable silk material in our Textile Lab tests, but the lower momme allows it to be offered at a lower price point. The silk performed well in Lab evaluations for moisture wicking abilities, so the set is a solid option for sweaty sleepers. If you want to experience even more luxury at bedtime, LilySilk's pajamas are made of the same silk material and are one of our top-tested picks.

Best Overall Satin Sheets

Mk Home Silky Satin Sheet Set

Pros

  • Affordable option
  • Smooth fabric
  • Polyester is a durable fiber

Cons

  • Polyester satin instead of real silk

When you don't want to pay for real silk, consider faux silk satin. For just $20 to $30, these polyester sheets are affordable, even compared to regular woven polyester bed sheets, and they're still luxurious. The sheets are loved by online reviewers who describe them as "super soft" and "silky smooth." They're not going to have all of the same properties as silk like temperature regulation and a more natural feel, but they will be easier to wash and care for. Plus, they're available in over 20 color varieties, so there's bound to be a hue to match your space. Although we haven't tested this set ourselves, in our Lab evaluations, polyester typically performs well as a durable fiber that's able to withstand regular use and wear.

Most Popular Satin Sheets on Amazon

Vonty Satin Sheets

Pros

  • 26 colors to choose from
  • Over 9,000 five-star reviews
  • Machine wash and dryer safe

Cons

  • Not made with true silk

Since they're synthetic polyester satin these sheets are extremely affordable, but they stand out because they're a popular pick on Amazon with over 13,000 five-star reviews and a 4.4 total rating. Some online reviewers swear that they love them so much, they bought additional sets for other beds in their home. One even raved that she liked these better than her Mulberry silk sheets. Our Lab analysts appreciate that these polyester satin sheets can be thrown in the washer and tumble dried on low heat, while real silk satin is more delicate and typically needs to be hung to dry. Reviewers do say the fine satin weave snags easily, so keep that in mind if you have pets with claws.

Best Silk Sheet Separates

PROMEED Flat Sheet

Flat Sheet
Credit: Promeed

Pros

  • Resisted shrinkage during wash
  • High strength rating in Lab tests
  • Wicks away moisture

Cons

  • Less abrasion resistant than other silks we tested

Want to give silk sheets a try without committing to a whole set? You can opt for separates. Promeed's silk material is impressively high quality but costs less than other 100% silk sheet sets on the market. When our Lab analysts evaluated the brand's silk material for durability, we found it to be strong and resistant to shrinkage in the wash, but it did only receive average scores for abrasion resistance. The silk received perfect scores in our tests for moisture management, which makes it a good pick for hot sleepers because it can wick away sweat. Our consumer testers praised the material for feeling smooth and comfortable against their skin as well. If you are interested in more than one piece, the brand does offer full four-piece sets and a silk pillowcase, which is a Textiles Lab favorite for silk pillowcases.

Best Silk Cotton Sheets

Cuddledown Silk Cotton Sheet

Silk Cotton Sheet

Pros

  • Benefits of both cotton and silk
  • Cotton is combed for extra softness
  • Machine dry on low heat

Cons

  • Sold as separates

If you aren't sure whether you should make the switch from cotton sheets to silk, this set is a blend of 55% silk and 45% cotton, so you get the best of both worlds. Reviewers love how they're even nicer than standard cotton sateen sheets because the cotton fibers are combed for an extra soft feel, yet they're not quite as expensive as a 100% silk set. With a 15-inch depth, the sheets should fit snugly over most mattresses and stay in place without sliding around like some 100% silk sets do. Plus, they can be machine washed and dried on a low heat setting. Just note that these are sold individually, so the price reflects a flat sheet, and it can be expensive to create a full set including a fitted sheet and pillowcases.

Manito The 22 Bedding Set

The 22 Bedding Set

Pros

  • Top-tested durable fabric
  • Rated highly for comfort
  • Fabric swatches available

Cons

  • Only three sizes

Silk sheets are a luxury of their own accord, but these ones from Manito are the most luxurious sheets we've tested. The silk fabric had the highest overall score in our Lab evaluations. It proved durable in our tests and received top ratings from consumer testers for smoothness and comfort. The sheets are made using quality 22 momme Mulberry silk, and the brand will even send you free fabric swatches to feel in person before you commit to buying them online. The downside? They're priced at $1,300 for a set, which is double the cost of silk bedding from other popular brands. You can only choose between Queen, King and California King sizing, but there are six neutral and fashion color options available to coordinate with your space.

Best Vegan Silk Sheets

Ettitude Signature Sateen Sheet Set

Signature Sateen Sheet Set
Credit: Ettitude

Pros

  • More affordable option
  • Easier care
  • Reviewers say they're soft and smooth

Cons

  • Some online reviews complain the material is thin

These lyocell sheets are often called "vegan silk" because they have a similar feel, but are made from chemically processed bamboo plants instead of silkworms. While most sheets labeled "bamboo" are really viscose (i.e. rayon) and use harsher chemicals, these are lyocell, which follows a more sustainable manufacturing process. They're more affordable than real silk, and they're easier to care for because they're not as delicate. Some reviews complain that these sheets are thinner than they expected and that they've experienced pilling after a few months of use, but most reviews boast about the luxurious feel. Online reviewers say they're not slippery, but they're still smoother than standard cotton sateen, with one raving, "They're the best combination of soft and smooth."

How we test silk sheets

"

In recent years, analysts at The Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab have tested over 275 sheet sets in the Lab and with consumer testers, including plenty of silk bedding. For silk and satin bedding specifically, we have tested over 30 samples (primarily silk pillowcases) and collected over 5,000 related data points for review. Here are a few characteristics we consider when evaluating sheets:

✔️ Washability: Our analysts wash the silk bedding repeatedly according to the care label instructions, visually assessing the material and taking note of any shrinkage, changes in appearance or softness and wrinkling.

✔️ Moisture management testing: We also consider if the silk material will keep you cool by wicking away moisture through testing using our Moisture Management Tester (MMT).

✔️ Abrasion testing: Abrasion resistance is measured using the Martindale tester, which rubs swatches of the silk sheets against an abrasive wool material 1,000 times to mimic long-term wear. Each swatch is scored according to industry standards.

a specialized machine called the instron pulling a swatch of pink silk fabric to measure the force needed to break the swatch, strength testing

✔️ Fabric strength: To measure the tensile strength of each silk sheet, we place a swatch of the material into our Instron machine (pictured here), which calculates the force required to break the material.

✔️ Consumer testing: We share product with consumer testers who rate the overall comfort and softness of the silk material. They also provide additional feedback about characteristics like overall fit, appearance, temperature regulation and more.

What to look for when shopping for silk sheets

linebreak

Silk sheets are categorized differently than sheets made with other fiber types because silk is a luxury fiber with unique properties. Here are a few things to keep in mind when shopping for silk sheets and bedding:

✔️ Silk vs satin: Satin is the weave, and silk is the fiber. Most silk sheets use a satin weave, but there are also satin sheets made with synthetic polyester fibers. These are typically more affordable and less delicate, but they don't feel quite as luxurious as real silk and don't share the same cooling properties. Some brands will try to pass synthetic satin sheets as silk, so if you want real silk sheets, make sure you check the fiber content before buying.

✔️ Momme: Momme (mm) is the fabric weight of silk and is used instead of thread count, which is the number of yarns per square inch. Because silk strands are so thin, thread count is not the best indication of quality. Momme, on the other hand, lets you know how much silk is used in the fabric. The top-performing silk fabrics in our tests are typically 22 momme or higher. In general, the higher the momme, the more expensive and luxurious the silk sheets will be.

✔️ Care instructions: Some silk bedding can be machine washed, while others recommend hand washing. If machine washable, it's likely that the sheets will still require more delicate care and hang-drying, so be sure to review the care label before purchasing a set.

What exactly is Mulberry silk?

linebreak

Mulberry silk is considered the highest quality you can find. It's like the Egyptian cotton equivalent of silk. The fibers are longer and more uniform, making the fabric smoother and more durable. As a result, most silk sheets on the market are made using Mulberry silk.
