The best silk pillowcases can add a bit of luxury to something you do every night: sleep. The beauty benefits of silk pillowcases include preventing damage to hair and skin, while the smoothness and temperature regulation of silk make for a comfortable pillowcase. There are tons of brands to choose from (and plenty of them performed well in our Lab tests), but when it comes to silk pillowcases, Fishers Finery and Slip are two of the most popular options.
To compare Fishers Finery and Slip, I thoroughly evaluated the durability, care, smoothness, comfort, price and other key features of each brand's silk pillowcases. Specifically, I focused on the Fishers Finery 25mm Mulberry Silk Pillowcase and the Slip Pure Silk Pillowcase, both of which have undergone rigorous testing by experts in the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab. Below, discover the standout features of each brand and find out which silk pillowcase our pros recommend as the best value for your money.
A quick overview
Materials and construction
Fishers Finery
The Fishers Finery pillowcase is made of 100% mulberry silk with a 25 momme weight. "Higher momme means more silk was used as it refers to silk fabric weight," says Lexie Sachs, fiber scientist and executive director of strategy and operations at the GH Institute. Think of momme as thread count, but for silk.
Slip
The Slip pillowcase is also made of 100% mulberry silk, but it has a 22 momme. This is still an excellent silk fabric weight — it's just a bit lower than the Fishers Finery pillowcase.
Key takeaways
Our experts in the Textiles Lab recommend looking for 100% silk pillowcases with at least a 19 momme, or for the best quality, at least 22 momme. The higher the momme, the better. So, while both options fit the bill, Fishers Finery has a slight advantage on the quality of material because the higher silk fabric weight makes the pillowcase more durable, thicker, heavier and smooth (more on those factors below).
Comfort and softness
Fishers Finery
In our Lab tests, the Fishers Finery pillowcase received average scores in the blind consumer feel test for smoothness. However, at-home testers said it was very comfortable, they preferred it over other pillowcases and they reported no creases in their skin in the morning. More specifically, one at-home tester noted, "I liked the soft texture" and another said, "It felt cool for longer."
Slip
In our Lab tests, Slip earned the highest scores in the blind consumer feel test for softness when comparing to a dozen other silk pillowcases. At-home users also noted how soft and comfortable the pillowcase is and one remarked that it was "calming to use at night because it was soft and cool to the touch." While the comfort and softness was superb, Associate Director of the Textiles, Paper and Apparel Lab Emma Seymour says, "Slip makes some overpromising claims on their site around anti aging, which cannot be substantiated."
Key takeaways
While at-home testers noted the Fishers Finery silk pillowcase was soft and remained comfortable throughout the night, the Slip silk pillowcase received higher marks for softness in our Lab tests. Sachs says this top-performing pillowcase has "super smooth fabric" and notes that it's "one of the softest pillowcases we've ever tested." If you're a hot sleeper, you may prefer Fishers Finery, but if you're looking for an extremely soft fabric, the Slip pillowcase may be the better option for you.
Durability
Fishers Finery
Due to the high momme count, the Fishers Finery pillowcase had the highest scores for both fabric strength and abrasion resistance in our silk pillowcase testing.
Slip
Slip's fabric was not as strong as other options in our Lab tests. The pillowcase is a bit delicate, meaning its durability and abrasion resistance was not as impressive as Fishers Finery.
Key takeaways
Silk is an expensive pillowcase material, so it's important to us to recommend options that will last you for a long time. If you want a pillowcase that will remain in great shape sleep after sleep after sleep, the Fishers Finery silk pillowcase aced our Lab's fabric strength tests, while Slip was not as strong.
Washability and wrinkle resistance
Fishers Finery
Silk pillowcases can be prone to wrinkling, but the Fishers Finery pillowcase washed well with only slight shrinkage and was not overly wrinkled after washing and drying in our Lab tests. Sachs also reports that it "had a nonpressed appearance in our wrinkle resistance test," which means it's fairly smooth, not wrinkled but not exactly a pressed, steamed look. The brand provides a complimentary mesh bag, which is a nice touch, so that when laundering, you can place the pillowcase inside the bag to help prevent damage.
Care instructions: Fishers Finery recommends dry cleaning or handwashing, but it is machine washer-safe on a dry cycle in a mesh bag and you can then lay it flat to dry.
Slip
With one of the lowest wrinkle resistance scores, the Slip pillowcase requires extra care when laundering to prevent creases and wrinkles, although the pillowcase did not significantly shrink and showed minimal shrinkage after washing and drying. It does not come with a wash bag, but you can buy the brand's Delicates Bag for laundering.
Care instructions: This pillowcase is machine washable on a gentle cycle in cold water and you can line dry it in shade. Slip also recommends handwashing and dry cleaning without trichloroethylene to keep it in the best condition.
Key takeaways
"Slip was prone to wrinkles after laundering and Fisher’s Finery shrunk a bit, but overall, both washed well," says Seymour. Our Lab tests include laundering each pillowcase, followed by measuring for shrinkage, evaluating appearance changes (pilling and wrinkles) and comparing the softness before and after. Follow the product's care label and our instructions for washing a silk pillowcase to ensure you maintain its appearance, softness and quality for as long as possible.
Moisture wicking and temperature regulation
Fishers Finery
Earning a perfect score (five out of five) for moisture management in our Lab tests, this pillow excelled at moisture-wicking, meaning it spreads out sweat quickly. Superb moisture-wicking for bedding translates to maintaining a comfortable body temperature throughout the night and our consumer testers unanimously agreed that they stayed cool while sleeping.
Slip
This pillowcase had excellent moisture-wicking abilities in our Lab tests, although at a slightly lower level than Fishers Finery, receiving a score of 4.5 for moisture management. With the same score for temperature regulation, Slip kept testers cool during the night.
Key takeaways
Both pillowcases were excellent at moisture-wicking in our Lab tests and at-home users reported similar satisfaction for temperature regulation. However, Fishers Finery scored just a little bit higher in moisture management tests, so it would be better at wicking sweat away from your face as you sleep.
Price
Fishers Finery
The 25-momme pillowcase retails for $68 on Amazon for one Queen-sized pillow, but can be lower while on sale (it is $53 at the time of writing). You can save a bit of money if you opt for the brand's 19-momme silk fabric or you can splurge for an even more luxurious pillowcase and buy the more expensive 30-momme option.
Slip
Retailing for $89 on Amazon, Walmart, Nordstrom, Slip and more for one Queen pillowcase, Slip costs more than other similarly smooth options that we have tested. At the time of writing, it is on sale for $65 on Amazon, which brings it down to the usual price of Fishers Finery.
Key takeaways
For the Fishers Finery pillow, Sachs says she recommends the 25-momme silk as "the most bang for your buck, and though it's not inexpensive for a pillowcase, it's still half the price of other silk options."
Pillowcase colors, sizes and fit
Fishers Finery
Available in 15 colors, including three striped options, our experts report the shades are vibrant and rich in color. You can chose to purchase a Standard, Queen or King size, with the option to buy a singular pillowcase or a set of two. To secure its fit even better, Fishers Finery features an envelope closure that tucks the fabric into itself that minimized shifting while sleeping.
Slip
Available in 16 colors on Amazon, you can only choose from Queen or King sizes. However, there are even more color options on Slip's website, including options with initials, cheetah print, plaid and more, which is a unique touch to your bedding. Slip also has a zippered closure to keep the pillowcase from moving.
Key takeaways
Slip has a leg up in patterns and bold color options, but Fisher Finery has better neutral color options and the envelope closure is ideal because Sachs says "the zippers tend to enclose the pillow better, but they sometimes look a little flimsy and can be finicky to open and close." Silk can be slippery, so a proper-fitting pillowcase can prevent it from slipping off as you move in your sleep.
Fishers Finery vs. Slip: Which is best?
We've tested over 35 silk pillowcases in recent years and 13 options in our last test to find the best option out there — and Fishers Finery earns a gold medal among our Textiles Lab experts. "All in all, we recommend Fisher’s Finery as our best overall — it’s more affordable than Slip and it’s more durable, while still being moisture wicking and smooth," Seymour says.
Slip has its pros, especially when it comes to softness, pattern designs and resisting shrinkage. Our experts even ranked it as the smoothest option in our complete roundup of the best silk pillowcases. Plus, it performed similarly to Fishers Finery among consumers, who gave similar scores to both pillowcases in categories like body temperature regulation. However, at the end of the day, Fisher's Finery is offered for a lower price, has a higher silk fabric weight, is more durable, smooth to touch, better at moisture wicking, was rated the best overall silk pillowcase by our experts and earned the Good Housekeeping Seal.
