- The Sink Topper is my favorite bathroom accessory, and I bought it for $25 on Amazon.
- It unfolds to cover the top of your sink, providing space to rest beauty products.
- The mat is an affordable solution to limited bathroom counter space.
I recommend gifts for a living, and there are only a few products I've come across that've changed my life. One of those is a $25 bathroom accessory that I bought with an Amazon gift card two summers ago after moving to New York City. It's called the Sink Topper.
Famously, this city doesn't have much to offer by way of storage — so when the Sink Topper showed up on my TikTok "For You" page shortly after moving, I immediately added it to my Notes app wishlist. (I highly recommend starting one of these for when family and friends ask what you want for birthdays and holidays.)
Instead of waiting seven months for my birthday, I decided to cash in on an Amazon gift card I had lying around. Little did I know, the result of which would provide me with a revolutionary product I'd use almost daily for the next several years.
How It Works
Available in two sizes (standard and large), this mat — which is made of silicone, according to Sink Topper— unfolds to cover the top of your sink, providing you with more space for makeup, hot tools and other getting-ready items.
The trifold mat is heat-resistant up to 480ºF, per the brand, meaning you can rest most curling irons and straighteners on it mid-use (depending on their heat settings).
The brand also states that the mat can support up to 7 pounds of weight before collapsing — a number I've never even gotten close to.
The mat can even be used to clean makeup brushes, per Sink Topper. While I haven't taken advantage of this feature yet, the process seems simple, thanks to the textured center surface and water-draining holes.
One customer wrote, "I used the makeup brush cleaning spot and left them to dry overnight — [they] came out perfect and ready to use in the morning."
When you're done using it, you can fold up the trifold mat and set it aside until the next use. The fold-up design and built-in hanging loop make it easy to store on a hook or propped up against the sink base cabinet.
Why I Love My Sink Topper
For me, the affordability aspect of the Sink Topper cannot be overstated. For $25, I can gain nearly 20 inches of space that I can use to lay out makeup, hot tools, hair accessories and more. And once I'm ready, I can return everything back to its place and fold up the Sink Topper until the next day when I pull it out again.
I also love how durable it's proven to be. I've been using mine nearly every day for two years, and it's barely showing wear and tear. Aside from a spot of makeup residue that I can't quite seem to get off, it looks just like it did when I bought it.
Plus, the silicone material is easy to clean; I can wipe it off with makeup remover or soap if it gets dusty or dirty.
What to Keep in Mind Before Buying
While I love my Sink Topper and would buy it again in a heartbeat if I were to lose it or damage it, there are downsides that I think are worth mentioning, especially if you're keen to buy one for yourself or others.
- The faucet cut-out could be larger. Maybe I get a little too rambunctious when washing my hands, but I always manage to get water around the cut-out area. (I wish it were a bit larger to avoid this issue.) Therefore, it's important to be careful while running the water to avoid splashing. Either unplug all electric styling tools or keep them far enough away for safety when using the faucet, whether you're washing your hands or your makeup brushes.
- Not all makeup can be removed from the silicone mat. I use a silicone applicator to apply my concealer and tend to place it in the same spot on the mat whenever I do my makeup. Over time, I've noticed that some of the makeup has rubbed off on the mat. Though I've tried to clean it with makeup remover and soap, it still hasn't fully budged.
Final Thoughts
If you're looking for a way to increase sink space, I couldn't recommend the Sink Topper enough. It's affordable, easy to store, durable, and supportive of a variety of different items.
No matter where I move next, I know I'll be taking this handy bathroom gadget along with me.
If, for some reason, the Sink Topper is out of stock or you're looking for something similar with a few tweaks, here are a few additional options.
