Shopping for a mattress notoriously takes a long time — but it doesn't have to be that way. Tuft & Needle is one of our favorite mattress brands, and it's available on Amazon for quick and easy shipping. If you're wondering whether the Tuft & Needle's convenience and relatively affordable price range (Queen mattresses are under $1,000) means it skimps out on quality or luxe features, we put the brand to the test to fully evaluate whether T&N mattresses are worth buying or not.
The Tuft & Needle Original Mattress is our top pick for the best mattresses on Amazon. Not only is this foam mattress cushioning and supportive, but it can also arrive at your door in a matter of days (for less than $1,000!).
To write this review, we surveyed over 150 T&N mattress owners, evaluated feedback from our sleep testers and considered testing notes from our experts in the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab. T&N offers a variety of mattresses, pillows, mattress toppers and more bedding products, but the Original Mattress is a consumer favorite and one of our top picks among over 100 mattresses that we've tested in the past year.
Tuft & Needle Original Mattress overview
Boasting over 11,000 five-star reviews on Amazon, this popular pick has a cushioning memory foam with medium-firm support and a responsive feel — a combination that's not easy to come by.
Who it’s best for
The T&N Original Mattress is one of our favorite mattresses because it suits people with all sleep styles and our testers have raved about its comfort. While we would recommend this model to most sleepers, here are the ones we think this mattress will suit the best:
Shoppers on a time crunch
Whether you're on a time crunch because you're moving to a new home or you simply want a new mattress ASAP, shipping and delivery times do not get much better than with Amazon. Our testers and experts reported that this mattress arrived quickly and was easy to setup, so you'll be sleeping comfortably in no time (a.k.a., as quickly as four days with free Prime shipping). The mattress arrives in a box, which can be much easier to bring up narrow staircases if you live in an apartment complex or a higher level of a house.
Back and stomach sleepers
This mattress has a medium-firm feel, yet the foam is uniquely responsive (more on that below!). The responsive foam makes this a great pick for all sleeping positions, but we ultimately find it best for those who sleep on their back or stomach. If you change positions often throughout the night — but you mainly sleep on your stomach or back — then this mattress can work well for you.
Back pain sufferers
While a mattress cannot "cure" your back pain, a comfortable, high-quality mattress can help alleviate some aches and pain. The pressure-relieving foam and responsive, supportive feel helps the mattress contour to the body and properly align your spine to protect your back and help relieve back pain. Plus, a good night's rest can always help with chronic pain, so a comfortable mattress that helps you sleep won't hurt.
Those looking for motion isolation
This mattress' superb motion isolation will help you sleep through the night if your partner moves a bunch in their sleep. Users and testers shared that this mattress had better motion isolation than any other mattresses they've slept on before, so this is an excellent choice if your partner tosses and turns throughout the night.
Hot sleepers who still want a foam mattress
Foam mattresses and hot sleepers typically do not mesh well, but many of our testers found this mattress to keep them cooler than other foam picks. While it still may not be our top choice for someone who overheats at night, the cooling properties in this mattress make it a great option for hot sleepers that truly prefer the feel of a foam mattress.
Keep in mind that some of our testers felt the mattress made them a bit warm on hotter nights, but in comparison to other foam models, most of our testers were impressed that their body temperature remained comfortable. Anyone looking for even more cooling features may want to opt for the T&N Original Hybrid Mattress. This 2025 Good Housekeeping Bedding Award winner combines foam infused with gel to help prevent overheating as well as pocketed coils, all encased in a cover with extra cooling qualities.
Firmness and feel
The firmness and overall feel of a mattress can make or break whether a mattress is comfortable for you. The T&N Original mattress has a medium-firm feel, thanks to the layers of different types of foam unique to the brand. The layers of foam work to contour to your body while remaining firm and preventing too much of a sink-in feeling. Many testers noted that there was a good balance of the firmness and softness in this mattress. "This mattress has the right firmness and allows you to move easily," one tester shared.
If you're looking for an option that's similarly supportive and even softer than the Original Mattress, you may prefer the T&N Mint Hybrid Mattress or the T&N Original Hybrid Mattress. Both picks have a medium-plush firmness level with more of that traditional "sink-in" feel of a foam mattress, although they both come at a higher price tag. "It's firm without causing joint pain. It's supportive yet soft," one tester said of the Mint Mattress.
Materials and construction
Foam mattresses are traditionally known to get hot throughout the night and provide a sink-in feel when you lay down — but foam mattresses have come a long way since memory foam was first introduced into the market. The T&N Original Mattress includes multiple layers of different materials and types of foam to combat the overheating with a firm feel, while still providing the body conforming and motion isolation that people love in a foam mattress.
Here's a breakdown from top to bottom of the layers and materials in this mattress:
- Cover: The entire mattress is wrapped in a heather gray cover with a tufted design on the top portion. This knit cover features cooling technology to help prevent overheating. Users reported that they liked the gray color and that the fabric of the cover is soft and comfy.
- T&N Flex foam: The top layer of the mattress is a cushioning foam that provides pressure relief. This layer is breathable, responsive and allows you to sink in while still providing firm support.
- T&N Release foam: The next layer in the mattress includes ventilated foam that the brand says should provide pressure relief to the body and remain cool.
- T&N Adaptive foam: This layer consists of a high-density memory foam that includes the brand's proprietary T&N Adaptive Foam technology, which T&N claims to be supportive while still allowing the mattress to contour to the body. The foam in this layer is infused with graphite and ceramic gel, which is designed to help pull heat away from the body, combat memory foam's ability to cause overheating and keep you cool as you sleep.
- Base foam: At the bottom of the mattress is another 7 inches of high-density, firm, and durable polyurethane foam that provides extra support and stability to the mattress.
How it performed in our tests
Overall feel and comfort
Our testers and the users we surveyed generally felt that this mattress provided a great level of firmness while still offering the qualities that are beneficial about a foam mattress (contouring to the body, motion isolation and a bit of a sink-in feeling). Some testers reported that seems stiff or too firm at first, but ends up conforming to the body a little and feeling comfortable throughout the night.
Testers and users also noted that they found the top layer to be comfortable and soft to sleep on. One tester even called it "the best mattress I have ever slept on without needing any topper on the mattress." Another said, "I have insomnia and I have slept better on this mattress than any other mattress."
Keep in mind that some users reported the mattress to be too firm, especially when sleeping on their side, but most users who knew this pick would be firmer than traditional foam models loved the feel of the T&N Original mattress.
Motion isolation
Perhaps the biggest pro of this mattress is the superb motion isolation. The foam layers help to prevent feeling someone else tossing and turning in the bed, since it won't bounce on your end. Many users and testers said they don't feel their partner getting in and out of the bed, with many giving it high scores for motion isolation. "It doesn't buckle or shift when my spouse moves in bed," one tester said.
Body temperature regulation
Foam is not the best option for anyone who is a very hot sleeper or experiences bad night sweats. If that's the case for you, try a different type of mattress with even better cooling properties and less memory foam like a hybrid, latex or innerspring model. However, the ventilated foam layer and T&N Adaptive Technology in this mattress help keep it cooler than other foam mattresses.
Many testers reported that they maintained a comfortable body temperature when sleeping on this mattress and did not overheat. "I did not feel too hot or cold in this mattress; it felt just right," one tester shared.
Edge support
The edge support of this mattress is definitely lacking. Many users told us this mattress does not have much edge support and gave it a low rating for edge support. This means it sagged when you sat on the sides, which could be a potential flaw for anyone who has trouble getting in and out of the bed. If you don't find yourself sitting on the edge of your bed often and you get in and out of bed with ease, then this may not be a concern for you and certainly not a dealbreaker.
Maintaining shape
Testers and users reported that this mattress maintained its shape well, yet conformed to their body enough that it was still comfortable. One tester said the mattress was "pressure-relieving and contouring," but still kept its shape. Another tester said, "I do feel like it conforms to my body a little, but overall, it very much keeps its firm shape."
Ordering and delivery
The convenient, fast, free shipping of T&N mattresses make this brand a good option if you're in need of a great mattress quickly. If you purchase the mattress through the Tuft & Needle website, the shipping is free and will arrive in two to five business days. If you order the mattress from Amazon, it gives a 12-hour window of delivery on a day around four business days from ordering.
Not only is the shipping free, but the brand also offers free returns and a 100-night sleep trial for a full refund and a limited 10-year warranty that covers manufacturing and workmanship defects. So, you may have to carry the box into your bedroom or apartment, but if you dislike the mattress after weeks of sleeping on it, you can still get your money back — and no, there are no loopholes, the brand truly honors this deal.
This mattress is delivered compressed in a box, so you'll have to open it up and allow the mattress to expand before laying on it. Give the mattress about two to three hours to fully expand before you sleep (if you can give it a few more hours, that's even better). Our testers were impressed by the fast expansion and the lack of odor. "I was shocked by how quickly the mattress took shape (basically immediately) and that there was no associated smell," one said.
Almost all testers and users reported no problems with the setup or delivery. "I set up the mattress all by myself and had no troubles," one tester shared. However, one tester noted that they did not receive an alert that the mattress would arrive, and the box took up space in the building's hallway until it was able to be brought into the apartment. Some mattress brands will notify you sometime before the delivery to give a timeframe of when they may arrive with the mattress, but T&N mattresses will arrive in a box, so be sure to check the delivery day and be home if you want to bring the box up immediately upon arrival.
Bottom line: Is the T&N Original Mattress worth it?
After all our testing and evaluations, we believe Tuft & Needle mattresses are definitely worth the money, but it's best to wait until a major shopping holiday. After discussing with our mattress experts in the GH Institute and rounding up the best mattress deals these past holidays like Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Memorial Day and Labor Day, I can confidently say the T&N Original Mattress is regularly on sale. If you can't wait until the next major sale, this mattress is already cheaper than a lot of other foam mattresses, so we still believe it's worth the investment.
The only downside that we have with this mattress is the edge support. However, memory foam mattresses typically don't have the best edge support, so it's not too out of the ordinary for this one.
Overall, this is a solid foam mattress that’s performed well for hot sleepers who prefer a firmer feel, but still want the motion isolation and conforming nature of foam. Plus, it arrives quickly and is supportive for back and stomach sleepers.
Other mattresses from Tuft & Needle
Here are some other mattresses from the brand that we've evaluated and liked:
- Tuft & Needle's Mint Mattress: This is another popular choice from the brand that our testers were very impressed by. The foam is responsive like the T&N Original Mattress, but it's even plusher. However, it's still firmer than other plush foam mattresses, so we wouldn't recommend it to someone who only prefers extra-soft mattresses. "I’m a very hot sleeper and was also surprised that I didn’t overheat sleeping on it! It felt breathable," one tester shared.
- Tuft & Needle Original Hybrid Mattress: Receiving nearly perfect ratings from users and testers, this hybrid mattress was a 2025 Good Housekeeping Bedding Awards winner. Many testers said the mattress had a slight sink-in feel and was comfortable to sleep on. "The top layer has a nice texture to it, and it keeps you a nice temperature throughout," one tester said. It's a bit more expensive than the Original Mattress though.
- Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid Mattress: This is the most expensive mattress of all three of our top picks from the brand. One tester said that lying in the correct position on this mattress helped alleviate some chronic back pain. Testers liked how this mattress contoured to their body, is covered in a soft fabric and maintains their body temperature. "[The] mattress does not make me hot or sweat when I am using it, keeping my body nice and cool whether covering up with a blanket or a thicker comforter," one shared.
