The Murphy bed craze is alive and well. As we hunt for ways to add value to our homes without full-scale renovations, multi-purpose pieces like Murphy beds are major assets. They can double the size of any room. They can be pretty complicated custom builds, but more and more direct-to-consumer brands are recognizing the demand. As a result, we've been able to track down some pretty stylish and functional options that are ready to deliver in a matter of weeks. Our latest favorite is a chest-style bed from Costco that reminds us of a Narnia cabinet.
Costco's Illusion Queen Cabinet Bed includes its own hypoallergenic foam mattress, no box spring required. It comes with an anti-tip kit for safety, plus a power module with a USB port. The bed even has a narrow shelf within, placed just under the included charging station. So when it's in "guest room mode," you can keep any of your needed devices, from your phone to your alarm clock.
What makes the cabinet bed so enticing? A traditional Murphy bed is sometimes referred to as a "wall bed"—and for good reason. It often needs to take up a lot of vertical real estate for a full or queen-size mattress to fold up, flush against the wall, and out of sight. This works great if you have a spare room you want to make multi-purpose. However, if you're working with low ceilings, or want to transform your living room or dining room, something that sits a bit lower to the ground can do you a lot of good. One Costco reviewer used it as a TV stand when folded up, so it doesn't constantly become an eyesore when it's out on display.
