• Stanley has issued a recall for all Stanley Trigger Action and Switchback travel mugs.
  • The recall comes after 38 people suffered burns caused by malfunctioning lids.
  • Approximately 2.6 million mugs sold in the United States are affected by this recall.

While mugs and to-go cups are a popular holiday gift idea, you'll need to double-check your purchase this year. Stanley has recalled its Switchback and Trigger Action Travel Mugs that have been sold from June 2016 through the end of December. Stanley stated the recall was initiated because "the lid threads can shrink when exposed to heat and torque, causing the lid to detach during use, posing a burn hazard."

"Stanley has received 91 reports worldwide, including 16 in the U.S., of the recalled travel mugs’ lids detaching during use, resulting in 38 burn injuries worldwide," the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) released in a statement.

How do I know if my Stanley mug was recalled?

If you bought a 12- or 16-ounce Switchback Travel Mug or a 12-, 16- or 20-ounce Trigger Action Travel Mug at any point since June 2016, then your mug was recalled. You can verify if your mug was impacted by checking the product identification numbers on the bottom of your mug and checking if it's one of the recalled numbers listed in Stanley's official press release.

What to do if you bought a recalled Stanley mug

While you may want to simply keep using your mug if it seems functional enough, it's best to follow Stanley's leads and dispose of the lids that can potentially shrink and detach over time. Customers can submit their product identification number and place of purchase (or NA if unknown) to request a free replacement lid here. You can also call Stanley's Recall Hotline at 866-792-5445 between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. ET Monday through Friday.

If you need the gift in time for the holidays, and you still have the receipt, you can either return the product at your place of purchase, or gift the mug without the lid (just include a note that it's on the way!).

Other Stanleys we recommend that haven't been recalled

If you'd rather return your mug and opt for a different gift for someone (or yourself), Stanley offers tons of other models that you can pick from that have not been recalled and are great quality. "At Stanley 1913, we are committed to constant improvement and are focused on creating quality products that are built for life," said a Stanley spokesperson to ABC News.
