Long gone are the days of going to the nearest mattress store and lying on various beds. Nowadays, mattress shopping is all about online research. The mattress industry (especially the bed-in-a-box sector) has expanded rapidly over the last 10 years, with more options than ever, from popular hybrid mattresses to mattresses with cooling technology and even organic mattresses. And when it comes to organic mattresses, you'll likely come across one brand — and one specific mattress — over and over again: Avocado.

The Avocado Green Mattress is our top-tested pick for the best organic latex mattress. The mattress comes with trusted organic certifications from the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) and Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and proves that you don't need to sacrifice quality for sustainability. Users consistently give it top scores for comfort and support, praising how it's improved their sleep quality.

Avocado launched in 2016 in hopes of bringing organic mattresses to the mainstream market. Since then, the brand has soared in popularity, earning recognition as a pioneer within the organic bedding industry for its mattresses, pillows and bedding while furthering its commitment to climate neutrality. With a long-standing record of supporting and donating to social and environmental initiatives and jump-starting a new zero-waste furniture collection, Avocado has been admirable in the ever-changing landscape of sustainability.

But beyond its commendable initiatives, does Avocado's popular Green Mattress live up to the hype? At the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab, we've evaluated hundreds of mattresses with at-home testers and surveyed more than 10,000 mattress owners to see how their beds have held up over the years. For our in-depth review of the Avocado Green Mattress, we analyzed over 1,000 data points from real users, and one of our experts even tried it at home.

Performance

Overall Comfort & Support

Our survey panel and testers alike gave this latex hybrid mattress high scores for comfort and support. Many told us they love sleeping on it and said it keeps their body weight evenly distributed. One user described the base model as a "firm mattress," but noted that "the surface feels soft." Another described it as "super soft but also very supportive."

While several users praised its "unbelievable comfort," we found that it was best received by those who prefer innerspring mattresses rather than users who swear by memory foam mattresses, particularly those who preferred a sink-in feel. This is because while foam cradles your pressure points creating that sink-in experience, lying on a latex bed like Avocado's can feel like floating on top of your mattress.

Edge Support

an analyst sits on the edge of a mattress

The Avocado Green Mattress's edge support falls somewhere in between a traditional coil mattress and a memory foam hybrid. Innerspring mattresses have excellent edge support, while mattresses made with thick layers of foam don't always have the best edge support. The Green Mattress should provide a happy medium.

The Green Mattress uses latex, which is more resilient than foam, so while there's some give, it won't sink nearly as much under your weight. The bed also has reinforced coils around the perimeter, which has become a popular feature of many hybrid mattresses. Compared to other latex hybrids, we found the edges more supportive, but it isn't the most noteworthy aspect of the mattress. That being said, none of our reviewers had any concerns with the edge support, and one told us, "I like that the edges are firm [enough] to sit on."

Motion Isolation

Like with edge support, latex mattresses tend to fall between innerspring and foam mattresses. Innerspring mattresses often have poor motion isolation, while, foam mattresses isolate and "absorb" any motion, rather than transferring it.

The Green Mattress is a latex hybrid and has both coils and bouncy latex. The latex helps add a layer of cushioning but doesn't give in as much under pressure, instead "bouncing" back, so the resulting motion isolation isn't particularly amazing. A few of our reviewers, especially those who previously slept on all-foam beds, told us they could feel their sleeping partners moving because of the springs, but it hasn't bothered those who aren't used to the exceptional motion isolation of memory foam.

Temperature

While materials like memory foam are known for trapping heat, latex provides ample breathability, making it ideal for hot sleepers. That being said, while latex mattresses sleep cooler than foam, they won't necessarily feel cool to the touch. Some users told us this mattress wasn't as cool as they hoped, but the majority of users gave it good scores for keeping them at a comfortable body temperature throughout the night. Overall, a latex mattress is a good option for hot sleepers compared to foam or hybrid beds, but it won't be quite as breathable as a traditional coil mattress.

Who is the Avocado Green Mattress best for?

Eco-conscious shoppers

For users looking to make more sustainable purchases when shopping for their next mattress, Avocado offers top-notch quality. You won't find a mattress that offers the same quality without compromising on sustainability, especially at this price point. While it isn't cheap, most mattresses, including organic options, have notably increased their prices in the last few years due to supply chain issues. The Green Mattress has received high praise from our tester panel, especially those who prioritized the product's impact on the environment.

Latex mattress lovers or curious traditionalists

Beyond its sustainable story, the Avocado Green Mattress is an especially great option if you like the feel of a latex mattress or if you simply don't like the feeling of memory foam. In our tests, those who prefer innerspring mattresses to foam hybrids often like the springy texture of latex. When lying on a latex mattress, you'll feel like you're sleeping on top of your bed, rather than sinking into it. Plus, the material contours to your body for a weightless feel.

Amongst the dozens of latex mattresses on the market, the Green Mattress is our top-tested pick. It's available in multiple firmness options (at an added cost) and uses quality materials and construction.

Materials

Avocado uses organic cotton, wool, latex and coils to make their gentle firm latex hybrid.

Here's a breakdown from top to bottom:

  • Organic cotton cover: The soft outer cover is needle-tufted by hand (complete with rosettes made of organic cotton yarn) to secure all the layers of the mattress without any chemical or water-based glue. The mattress is finished with reinforced seams along the edges and upholstered handles on the left and right sides.
  • Organic wool: Just below the cover lies a layer of wool with a thin non-woven backing. This layer acts as a flame-retardant and offers temperature regulation for extra comfort. Those who want to skip this layer can opt for the Vegan Mattress.
  • Latex: Next, Avocado uses 2 inches of resilient organic Dunlop latex for pressure relief and cushioning. On the Medium Pillow-Top and Plush Box-Top models, there's an additional 2 inches of Dunlop latex or 3 inches of Talalay latex on the top. Note that latex costs more to produce than foam, which can lead to a higher price point.
  • Zoned, pocketed coils: Individually wrapped, recycled steel coils create seven zones throughout the mattress, supporting the shoulders, back and hips. There are also reinforced coils along the perimeter for extra edge support.
  • Latex base: There's a final 1-inch layer of Dunlop latex at the bottom of the mattress.

Ordering & Delivery

Our survey panel found the ordering and setup process to be simple and easy, and those who spoke with customer service agents told us they were responsive and quick to solve any issues.

After purchasing the mattress online, it'll ship within a few days and arrive in a box for self-setup, so you won't need to wait around for a delivery window. Just keep in mind that mattresses — especially latex mattresses — can be heavy, so you'll benefit from a second set of hands to help you set it up. A Queen size can weigh anywhere from 114 to 144 pounds, depending on the firmness level. If you prefer in-home setup (a.k.a. white glove delivery), you can pay an additional $249 for a delivery service to bring the mattress into your home and set it up for you.

Trial Period

Avocado also offers an any-reason, generous 365-day trial period, but make sure to read the full terms and conditions. This means you can get a refund if it's not the right fit, as long as you've slept on it for at least 30 days. It also comes with a limited 25-year warranty, but we recommend you focus on the trial period, as warranties only cover manufacturer defects, which are often difficult to prove. Keep in mind that returned mattresses incur a $99 pickup fee, as Avocado donates more than 90% of its mattress returns.

Firmness Levels

In our surveys, the biggest concern among our respondents was finding a mattress with the appropriate firmness level. A too-soft or too-firm bed can lead to discomfort over time and even pain upon waking. The Avocado Green Mattress comes in three firmness levels, so you have multiple options to choose from. To help set you up for success, here are our recommendations for the best firmness level for different sleepers:

  • Firm: The classic Green Mattress has a "gentle firm" firmness level that's best suited to stomach and back sleepers as well as those with larger frames. In our evaluations, side sleepers may find it too firm and should opt for a softer model.
  • Medium: Mattresses with a medium firmness are the most popular for their versatility. This version works for most sleepers and is great for couples with different sleep positions. It's particularly well-suited to back sleepers and side sleepers who prefer a firmer feel.
  • Plush: The newest addition to the Green Mattress line, the box-top model offers a plush surface that's perfect for side sleepers, especially those with smaller frames.

Note: The Green Mattress has a weight limit of 700 pounds (350 per side) and the medium and plush models come at an increased price.

Durability and Life Expectancy

According to the brand, "an Avocado Mattress is designed to last at least 25 years and comes with a 25-year limited warranty." Since the brand was founded in 2016, we don't have any feedback past the seven-year mark, so we can't verify this yet. Still, users have told us that, so far, their mattresses have held up well. One told us their four-year-old mattress "has not developed any 'dips' or sunk in anywhere and still feels great." Other panelists, including those who've owned their beds for five and six years, also agree. Plus, latex has a longer life expectancy than memory foam, meaning the mattress should last longer than foam hybrids. That being said, you can use a mattress protector to extend the life of your mattress.

Sustainability

Certifications

a shot of a certification from the global organic textile standard or gots
Eric Teti

Avocado has earned an impressive roster of certifications for its mattresses. Of those, certifications from the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) and Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) are the gold standard for organic bedding. In addition, it's also earned certifications from MADE SAFE, which screens ingredients in the production process; Greenguard Gold, which checks for emission levels of certain chemicals; B Corp; Climate Neutral and more.

Manufacturing Process

Earning so many certifications is no easy feat, but Avocado has done so through vertical integration. According to the brand, it's one of the most vertically integrated mattress companies in the US as it owns everything from the factories to the wool and latex farms. This allows it to sell its GOTS-certified Eco Organic Mattress at a lower price than many brands on the market.

Pricing

Like many online mattress brands, Avocado has raised its prices over the years in response to industry-wide increases in material and production costs. That said, it's still hard to find a brand that delivers the same quality at this price while supporting sustainable initiatives. As a result, it's no surprise that the Green Mattress has such a loyal audience. One of our reviewers even said, "Organic is huge to me. For the price, I am just blown away. Avocado is truly the best product, and I recommend [it] to anyone who would be interested."

The Bottom Line: Is the Avocado Green Mattress worth buying?

For the eco-conscious shopper or latex mattress lover, the Avocado Green Mattress may be the perfect fit. It'll be hard to find a latex hybrid mattress with the same attention to detail, comfort and quality construction. It combines the contouring, floating feel of latex with supportive, ergonomic coils and a hand-tufted organic cotton cover with pillowy wool batting for a relaxing sleep.

Plus, if you're on the fence, you can always try it out for up to 365 nights before committing (and if you return it, the brand will donate it to a good home).
