When you find yourself in need of a new mattress, the best approach is looking to the experts. “At the Good Housekeeping Institute, we know choosing the right one is a huge deal,” says executive textiles director Lexie Sachs. She took over the Avocado mattress store in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, where she used the Avocado Green to demonstrate three key things she looks for in a quality mattress. Read on and watch above: You, too, can (and should!) test your next mattress like we do.
1) Edge & Alignment Check
First, “check the edges and make sure they don’t sink in when pressed,” says Lexie — a firm edge is an indication of high quality construction and can be lacking in lesser models. Next, it’s time to give it a test-rest: “Lie down to make sure your spine feels aligned and the mattress fits your body type and sleep position.”
2) Materials Check
Look a little deeper into any organic or sustainability claims. Seek out those with reputable certifications, like the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) — just two of several the Avocado Green mattress holds.
3) Customer-Ease Check
Look for brands that offer trial periods, so you can properly test your new mattress before fully committing. Many even have in-store shopping discounts and low-lift delivery options. Avocado, for instance, offers a one year trial period for many of it's products — though they recommend sleeping on it for at least a month first — and the Green mattress comes rolled up in a box for easy, stress-free delivery.
