Today's adjustable bases are smart and effective: They allow you to elevate the head and foot of the bed for a personalized sleep position and can help reduce pressure on your airway and improve sleep quality (or even provide extra support for reading or watching TV in bed). For users who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), acid reflux, restless leg syndrome or snoring, adjusting the head or foot of your bed can offer much-needed comfort and relief.

At the Good Housekeeping Institute, we tested 24 popular adjustable bed bases to find the best available. Beyond researching popular brands and applying our engineering expertise, we worked with at-home consumer testers (including individuals with OSA and other health conditions) for valuable user feedback. We also consulted medical professionals for added insight.

Best Overall

Saatva Adjustable Base Plus

Pros

  • Free white-glove delivery with setup
  • 850-pound weight capacity
  • Lots of premium features, including wall-hugging design

Cons

  • May be too tall for some users

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Anyone seeking a well-engineered adjustable bed with full-service delivery and setup included.

WHAT TO KNOW: Manufactured by Leggett & Platt, this base includes premium features like presets and programmable positions, under-bed lighting, USB A and C ports, a wall-hugging design, multiple height options and three massage intensities. We like that Saatva offers free white-glove delivery, complete with instructions on using your adjustable bed, so you can skip the heavy lifting.

It's available in 10 sizes, including an upper-flex option designed specifically for the brand's adjustable Solaire Mattress. The base also supports up to 850 pounds.

HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS:

✔️ Customization: Many of our consumer survey panelists praised this base for being easy to operate and for the unlimited positioning options. You're also able to save your favorite position to a button on the remote.

✔️ Presets: The zero-gravity preset, which elevates the head and foot for a weightless feel, was especially popular, with one user sharing that it helps both her and her husband "fall asleep pretty quickly." The anti-snore preset slightly elevates the head to ease pressure on your airway.

✔️ Compatibility: We like that Saatva offers half-inch increments for height with full-service setup, so the bed can easily slide in a bed frame that's 12 to 17 inches off the ground. However, a tester in his 70s who pairs it with Saatva's 11.5-inch Classic Mattress noted that the taller height of this base might be too high for some unless you opt for a thinner mattress or place the base directly on your bed frame without the legs.

Lucid L300 Adjustable Bed Base

L300 Adjustable Bed Base
Now 6% Off
Credit: Lucid

Pros

  • Easy DIY setup
  • Can pre-program a favorite position
  • Built-in dual USB ports

Cons

  • Limited height options
  • Lacks premium features like under-bed lighting

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Budget-conscious shoppers who don’t mind assembling their own base or manually fine-tuning positions in exchange for a more affordable price.

WHAT TO KNOW: The Lucid L300 may lack premium features like massage and under-bed lighting, but it delivers on the basics: It raises your head and feet and includes a wireless remote for pre-programming your preferred position. For a true zero-gravity experience, however, you'll need to manually adjust the head and foot as there’s no preset button for that.

While there is no King-size bed available, Lucid recommends purchasing two Twin XL models and syncing them.

HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS:

✔️ No-frills design: In a recent survey, a consumer in their 60s told us that this bed's adjustable design was a game-changer after they struggled to sleep on their flat, platform bed. It also has thousands of five-star reviews on Amazon, where reviewers said they appreciated the simplicity of adjusting their bed without excessive features or controls. Although it does have built-in dual USB ports.

✔️ Easy setup: The brand claims setup takes just five minutes and can be done solo, eliminating the hassle of scheduling a delivery service. Many online reviewers agreed, including some of our panelists, that the base itself is still heavy.

✔️ Compatibility: The downside is that there's only one height option, though the zero clearance option allows you to place it directly on your bed frame instead.

Best High-Tech

Tempur-Pedic Ergo Smart Base

Ergo Smart Base
Credit: Good Housekeeping/Olivia Lipski

Pros

  • Adjustable lumbar support
  • Lots of high-tech features, including automatic anti-snore adjustments
  • Free white-glove delivery

Cons

  • Lacks wall-hugging technology

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Those who want all the bells and whistles, including sleep tracking and automatic anti-snore adjustments. It's also an excellent choice for back pain sufferers needing extra lower back support. Plus, the price includes free white-glove delivery.

WHAT TO KNOW: Tech-savvy users will love this bed’s advanced features and seamless functionality. It offers a variety of pre-programmed positions plus the flexibility to create your own using the remote or app. There's also optional sleep tracking and coaching, along with tools to monitor room temperature, humidity and air quality, plus additional lumbar support, massage and anti-snore controls.

If you want even more high-tech features, we recommend checking out Tempur-Pedic's Ergo ProSmart Base, which has a built-in sound bar.

HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS:

✔️ Optional lumbar support: We think the standout feature is the adjustable lumbar support bar, which can be raised at the touch of a button for additional lower back support."I love being able to adjust the lumbar support since my lower back is starting to hurt [from pregnancy], and this gives me the support I need," shared one tester.

✔️ Smooth operation: One of our testers reported that this base was easy to use from the first night, noting how quickly it adjusted to their desired position. Still, it lacks wall-hugging technology, so elevating the head may push you out of reach of your nightstand.

✔️ Massage modes: The massage capabilities are impressive, offering three settings in two areas — in testing, we thought it offered a much better experience than the usual vibrating options.

✔️ Anti-snore functionality: Other users praised the personalized anti-snore mode, which automatically raises the head or pulses the bed when snoring is detected.

Best for Seniors

Sealy Ease® Power Base

Ease® Power Base
Credit: Good Housekeeping/Jillian Solazzo

Pros

  • Easy to use, according to older testers
  • Wide height range with adjustable legs
  • Free white-glove delivery

Cons

  • Can't save custom positions

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Those seeking basic head and foot elevation without all the extras, as well as those who value free full-service delivery.

WHAT TO KNOW: According to our older consumer testers, sometimes all you need from an adjustable bed base is straightforward control over your bed's position — advanced features like under-bed lighting or massage modes are nice, but not essential. This Sealy model delivers on simplicity and reliability, allowing you to raise your head and feet to find your ideal sleep position. It also offers two presets: the popular zero-gravity position and a quick flat option.

HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS:

✔️ No-frills design: While you can’t save custom positions, testers praised this base for its ease of use and intuitive operation.

✔️ Easy operation: Senior testers were particularly impressed by this model, highlighting the seamless free delivery and setup, easy-to-use controls and relatively quiet motor.

✔️ Versatility: One described it as "excellent quality," while another noted, "Being able to adjust the head of the bed was a big help in controlling my coughing from acid reflux." He also appreciated the ability to adjust the foot portion to alleviate symptoms of restless leg syndrome.

Leggett & Platt Prodigy PT

Prodigy PT
Credit: Leggett & Platt

Pros

  • Multiple height options, including zero clearance
  • Wall-hugger design
  • Full of convenient features like under-bed lights and USB ports

Cons

  • DIY setup can be cumbersome due to heavy base

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Anyone who wants a high-quality adjustable base with lots of helpful features, especially those comfortable with DIY setup.

WHAT TO KNOW: Leggett & Platt is a leading U.S. manufacturer of adjustable bases: They're known for producing bases for some of the biggest mattress brands, but you can also buy their bases directly, including the Prodigy PT. Designed to work with most mattresses, this adjustable base offers three quick-access positions: two presets for zero gravity and anti-snore and one customizable option for your favorite position. You can control the bed using either a wireless remote or an app, which lets you set an alarm to gently wake you by slowly adjusting the base.

There's also under-bed lighting for nighttime convenience and adjustable legs (or you can opt for the zero-clearance height if you want to just place it directly on your existing bed frame or box spring). Velcro-like strips ensure your mattress stays securely in place during position changes.

If purchasing on Amazon, note that the Twin XL, Full, King and Split King models have separate listings.

HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS:

✔️ Reliability: Leggett & Platt produces a number of adjustable beds, including our best overall pick, with a long history. You can find many of their models in retailers throughout the country. In our evaluations, they smoothly moved between positions.

✔️ Standout design: Our testers were impressed by the bed's "soothing" massage feature as well as its wall-hugger design, which keeps you within reach of your nightstand as the head elevates. Consumer panelists also praised the convenience of its eight USB ports (both A and C) for charging phones, tablets and other devices.

✔️ DIY setup: Since the bed ships directly to you, just be prepared for self-assembly — it’s heavy, especially if it needs to be carried up stairs.

The competition

double line break

We also considered several other popular bases in our search for the best adjustable beds. Below are our quick thoughts on these notable options that didn't make the final cut, along with the reasons why:

  • Avocado Eco Adjustable Base: Made using wood and organic cotton, this base sets itself apart from most with its unique materials and simple look. Still, you can't put it directly on your bed frame, so you're limited to a height of 4 to 12 inches with 4-inch increments.
  • Sleep Number FlexFit Base: These bases are specifically designed for Sleep Number mattresses. They're our top recommendation if you're looking for a complete smart bed setup (we like the p6 and i8 mattresses) with adjustable firmness, but they aren't compatible with other mattresses.
  • Helix Adjustable Base: You can program multiple positions (up to three) on this base, but testers preferred using the built-in presets for anti-snore and zero-gravity over manually customizing them. They also had mixed feedback about the massage features.
  • Amerisleep's Adjustable Bed+: This is a good option if you want a base with wall-hugging technology. It performed well in our tests but doesn’t stand out significantly from our other top picks.
  • Nectar's Premier Adjustable Bed Frame: While undeniably popular, we didn’t include it in our recommendations due to its shorter three-year warranty (unless extended for an additional cost) and mixed customer service feedback from our survey respondents.
  • Dawn House Bed: This adjustable bed stands out as one of the most thoughtfully designed options on the market. Unlike other bases, it allows you to raise and lower the entire bed height at the touch of a button. However, it comes with a steep price tag, and many users may find the extra features unnecessary.

How we test adjustable bases

an analyst evaluates the controls on the remote of the tempur pedic prosmart adjustable base
Jill Sollazzo

To find the best adjustable bases on the market, our team of expert scientists and engineers have:

✔️ Researched new models each year, diving deep into the details around materials, design, brand reputation, customer service and online reviews.

✔️ Surveyed more than 10,000 readers on our GH survey panel, analyzing over 170,000 answers to questions about the beds they own, including both mattresses and bases.

✔️ Sent 24 bases to dozens of consumer testers to review at home, both short and long term, in the past few years. For this review, our at-home consumer texsters included those with sleep disorders like insomnia, restless legs syndrome (RLS) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), as well as health conditions like acid reflux. They provided feedback on everything from setup to long-term experience.

✔️ Reviewed company-provided lab data and firsthand user experiences from our own surveying. We also consider any claims made to see whether any brands may be overpromising on performance.

✔️ Leveraged our backgrounds in fiber science, materials engineering and consumer science to assess everything from materials and mechanics to brand reputation.

✔️ Interviewed dozens of medical professionals and kept up with relevant sleep studies for added insight.

✔️ Visited dozens of showrooms to evaluate the bases firsthand and assess functionality. We also noted which types of users each model was best suited to.

✔️ Practicality: Testers share which functions they actively use and appreciate, as well as those they don’t. They also note the noise level of the motor when adjusting positions.

✔️ Sleep quality and comfort: Final scores assess whether the adjustable base improves sleep quality and comfort, both immediately and over time. Respondents also provide an overall satisfaction rating and compare the base to previous beds they’ve used.

✔️ Additional feedback: Reviewers share their specific likes, dislikes and any additional insights about their experience.

Things to consider when shopping for the best adjustable bed

double line break

Most adjustable bed bases on the market are manufactured by Leggett & Platt or Ergomotion, meaning the key differences between brands and retailers often come down to customer service and delivery methods. Additionally, keep these factors in mind:

✔️ Price: Most adjustable bases cost between $1,000 and $2,000 for a Queen-size model, though excellent options with fewer features are available at lower prices, and high-end models can cost more. Keep in mind that Split King models are typically more expensive due to the need for separate motors for each side.

✔️ Height: Most adjustable bases come with adjustable legs that you'll need to set up. Some models have only one height option, while others are zero-clearance, allowing placement directly on a bed frame or box spring without legs. So consider the height before purchasing: Does the base need to fit within your existing bed frame? Or do you have a preference for how high your bed (including the mattress) should be from the ground?

✔️ Programmable positions: Most models include presets such as anti-snore (elevated head to reduce airway pressure), zero-gravity (elevated head and foot for a weightless feel) and a flat setting. Some also let you save additional custom positions to your remote or app. Consider what's important to you — do you frequently change sleeping positions, or are you more of a creature of habit?

two different remotes for adjustable beds side by side. one is simple with only adjustable head and foot and a lie flat button while the other includes massage features presets and more
Good Housekeeping/Jillian Solazzo

✔️ Premium features: Sleep tracking, massage, under-bed lights and built-in USB ports can all be helpful additions. Some beds also allow you to program a wake-up alarm that automatically raises your head. (In our tests, this was a feature that those with limited mobility especially appreciated.) Other bases offer a wall-hugging feature, so that as your bed shifts you stay within reach of your nightstand. Also, consider if you want to use a remote control or an app on your smartphone to control the bed.

✔️ Warranty: A warranty ensures you're covered if something goes wrong due to a manufacturing defect — not consumer error. Be sure to document the initial condition of your base and check for any defects upon delivery. Most warranties provide full coverage for the first few years, transitioning to prorated or limited coverage afterward. If purchasing through a third-party retailer, confirm that they are authorized to avoid issues with warranty claims.

Is an adjustable bed worth it?

double line break

It depends, but many testers, especially those with OSA or acid reflux, swear by them. They range widely in price — from under $1,000 for a simple base that raises the head and feet to over $3,000 for a high-end model with smart technology. If you’re investing in a new bed, a full sleep system with an adjustable base and mattress may be worth considering.

However, if you’re only looking to enhance comfort, you might prefer a less expensive adjustable mattress for firmness control or an adjustable base that just adjusts head and foot positioning.

Can I use a regular mattress on an adjustable bed?

double line break

Most of the time, yes. The majority are compatible with latex, memory foam and innerspring mattresses, though foam or latex mattresses tend to work better with adjustable bed frames because the materials are more flexible, allowing for an easy transition to different positions. Note that tall mattresses (especially those over 14 inches) often don't work well on bases, so make sure to check any specifications for your top contenders. You'll also want to make sure that any coils in innerspring or hybrid beds are individually pocketed.

Some brands sell the mattress and base together, which is your best bet if you want to make sure you have a compatible mattress for an adjustable bed. Otherwise, it’s best to check with the adjustable base brand before you buy it. Some do have restrictions on the mattress you can use, so it’ll save you a headache if you confirm beforehand. And when it comes to adjustable mattresses with different firmness levels, you don’t need a special base to get the benefits.

What's the difference between an adjustable bed and an adjustable mattress?

double line break

An adjustable bed is a motorized bed base that can move into different positions by raising the head and/or foot of the bed. Some also have other features like built-in massagers and lighting.

An adjustable mattress, also known as a smart mattress, allows you to change firmness levels using features like air chambers or interchangeable springs. It’s ideal if you’re looking to adjust firmness rather than the bed’s position.
