With decades of gift-giving experience under my belt — and as an editor at Good Housekeeping with a literal team of shopping experts at my fingertips — you'd think I'd have Mother's Day gifting down to a science. But two years ago, just a week or so before the big day, I found myself frantically searching online for something unique and meaningful to give my mom (read: anything but the usual bouquet of flowers or a forgettable candle).
While scrolling through Amazon's Mother's Day gift offerings, I stumbled across the perfect find: a cozy crewneck sweatshirt I could personalize with custom embroidery to celebrate my mom’s favorite role — "Grammy" to my son, Jonathan.
When it comes to Mother's Day gifts, this sweatshirt truly checked all the boxes. It’s personalized (a surefire way to make any gift feel extra special), wearable (because what mom needs another dust-collecting knickknack?) and available on Amazon with fast, free shipping. Best of all, it had that magic "surprise and delight" factor — something my mom would never think to buy for herself but would absolutely love.
You can find plenty of customizable "Mama" sweatshirts on Amazon, but I went with this one by Nazenti thanks to its solid ratings and reviews. Nazenti offers close to two dozen styles of embroidered apparel, but I thought my mom would appreciate this sweatshirt’s simple, elegant script the most.
The customizing process is simple and fun:
- First, choose the title you want front and center ("Grammy" for us!), along with the "established" year (I picked 2015, the year my son was born).
- Then, add her grandkid's name (or names) for the sleeve — up to 25 (!), which is great if grandma's got a lot of grandkids. My advice? Personalize it with special nicknames to make it even more meaningful.
- You can also select from a dozen shirt colors and 30 embroidery thread colors to really make it your own.
When my mom opened her gift, she was over the moon. Her favorite thing in the world is bragging about her grandson, so having Jonathan’s name and birth year embroidered on the sweatshirt made it an instant keepsake for her. She also raved about the quality, saying the fit was perfect and the material was soft and cozy. Two years later, she still wears it all the time — and she reports that it’s held up well after countless trips through the washing machine.
One thing to note: the initial price you see listed on Amazon is just the starting point. As you customize — choosing your style, colors and adding names — the price will go up a bit. The sweatshirt I ordered cost about $35 in the end (very affordable for a custom piece, if you ask me!), but the final price varies based on whether you pick a T-shirt, crewneck or hoodie, how many kids' names you add to the sleeve and the size (available from S to 4XL).
A few more quick tips if you’re ordering: Double-check your spelling (trust me!) and don’t wait until the last minute. Even though the turnaround time is impressively fast for a personalized item, you’ll want to allow about 9 to 10 days for processing and shipping — so go ahead and place your order ASAP to be sure it arrives in time for Mother’s Day on May 11.
