20 Gifts for Teen Girls Who Are Tough to Impress

Sure, you can put their name in neon lights, but you could also custom-make a favorite saying for a room sign. My good friend tells her teen girls that she loves them "To the moon and back," which would be adorable in lights. Note that the price does go up the more letters and symbols you add, so a twenty-character phrase could cost more than $100.

I named this the best overall camera for kids after testing a bunch of them. An earlier version is exactly what my eldest used for years as a young teen, decorating their room with the prints. Pictures pop out instantly for immediate gratification. Like with most cameras, there is no film included, so be sure to buy film separately so the gift is ready to go.

Sabrina Carpenter now has a perfume line, and the bottle looks like a chocolate bar. This three-piece set includes a small 1-ounce bottle of perfume, a 0.3-ounce travel spray and a shiny lip gloss. This one's the Caramel scent, and there's also a red perfume called Cherry Baby and a pink one called Sweet Tooth.

Don't tell my eldest that they are getting a little crochet kit like this one from their grandma. We're raising a generation of makers, so even old-fashioned skills like crochet are hot again. This brand, straight out of Shark Tank, came recommended by a teen. The kit makes a little whale but there are others for a dinosaur, a fox, a lion and so on.

Watch out, Squishmallows. Nearly every teen I talked to this year wants a Jellycat plush. They're super soft, and each one is fun and full of personality. I had the giant 30-inch version of this Octopus, until a colleague begged to have it for her teen.

You can also get a smaller 12-inch version, which is more affordable. They also have seasonal Jellycat plush like a Christmas tree, a little 7-inch snowflake and, perfect for a teen who is out there killing it, a smiling 6-inch gold star.

Senior Parenting Editor Marisa LaScala, mother of a tween, called it early: ZipString is the Hot Toy this season. The manufacturer recommends it for ages 8 and up, including teens who can send the string dancing in the air as they learn new moves and tricks. All ZipString units have a battery that recharges with a USB cord, and this one, the Luma, glows in the dark.

Several teens I consulted have one of these on their wish list, and one I talked to in person was drinking out of one as we spoke. It's also a favorite of Nicole Papantoniou, the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances & Innovation Lab Director. Her favorite thing: It's easy to drink out of this two ways: using the spout or just tilting the bottle back to take gulps, no straw required. Two teens told me they want this specific pair of headphones. A selling point is that users can really dial in the bass to get the thumping sound they prefer. It's wireless, boasts a 40-hour battery and has a built-in microphone that's great for gaming. It can pair with iPhones and Androids to stream music or movies.

Karen Cicero, who helms our annual Best Kids' Book Awards, turned us onto this new release. (She's also got a young-adult daughter and teen nieces). "This new illustrated version of The Hunger Games is for ages 12 and up, and it's cool even if they've already read the regular version," Cicero says. "Plus, Hunger Games fans are pumped for the next book in the series, coming out in March."

Editors, experts and teens tested this printing pen, and it earned our approval. "The kit came with stencil paper and a QR code to figure out how to use it, which was nice," one young adult said. There's a speed-control slide on the pen to give crafters slow or fast flow of the warm plastic, which is used to create little designs. Another tester said, "You run out of filament pretty fast," so consider adding the inexpensive replacement filament along with your gift.

A few named this Brazilian Bum Bum Cream as something they crave. Teens do not need to firm their skin (insert Mom eye roll here), but they say they love how Brazilian Bum Bum Cream smells (notes of pistachio, caramel and vanilla), how it disappears into their skin and how it feels.

Jewelry comes up a lot with teens, and this initial necklace is a clever one. She can either wear her initial on the gold-plated brass chain or on the black choker - the set comes with both, plus one gold-plated, balloon-shaped letter.

If you're the parent of said teen, or someone close enough to spoil them, this spendy gift was on the list of nearly a third of the teen girls that I consulted. "The super short ones!" one girl emphasized. The price reflects the brand's popularity, but also, these booties are suede and lined in sheep fur, so they feel luxe. UGG also makes a popular slipper shoe, about $20 less.

If you have a gamer girl, she'll be able to put Robux to use in her favorite Roblox games. This is a digital code, not a physical gift, though you can print it out and put it in a card. Your teen gets a free, virtual Roblox item along with the game money to spend, and the gift card gets more than 135,000 five-star Amazon reviews. My eldest says, "I'd shop the Dress to Impress game's VIP section for more clothes and poses." A 19-year-old girl tells me, "I use Robux to buy cosmetics for my character."

I use this little case and I love it, which is why I'd recommend it as a special gift for a teen, too. It's sold as a travel case, but I personally use it to safely store my most-worn pieces. If you'd like, get it monogrammed for an extra $15. There's also a mini jewelry case for $10 less.

Over and over again, teens told me they wanted a hoodie or, more often, hoodies plural. One hot brand: Aelfric Eden, out of Los Angeles. The brand does a lot of fun gender-neutral appliqué designs.
