LGBTQ+ Pride month, traditionally celebrated in June, honors and commemorates the history of the gay rights movement which began at the Stonewall Inn in New York City more than 50 years ago. On June 28, 1969, a group led by drag queens fought back against a police raid and, more generally, against the systematic mistreatment of the queer community. Since then, the celebration of Pride has taken on a variety of forms: Some people feel inspired to come out, others celebrate and support their family and friends who have come out. Ultimately, Pride is a time of joy and celebration, from Pride festivals to festive gatherings at home. As you celebrate this season, spoil yourself, your besties and your chosen family members with some fun, and occasionally even practical Pride gifts.

A word to the wise: As you're shopping for pride gifts, be on the lookout for rainbow washing, a sneaky marketing tactic that may make you think a business is an LGBTQ+ ally, when it's really just using Pride as a way to make money. The best way to avoid rainbow washing is to shop at small and queer-owned businesses. Many of the products below fit that category, and some also give back to organizations that support the queer community.

And when in doubt, don't forget, you can always make a donation to charity or organization like The Trevor Project, GLAAD and National Center for Transgender Equality.

Celebrate Pride, and learn more about the community, all year with the stories below:
