Okay, so the phrase "push present" is inaccurate (and a little gross). Traditionally, they're gifts given to women after they give birth, or "push out" the baby. We know now, of course, that families are created in all sorts of ways, and not all of them involve pushing. But the idea is a good one: Whatever the process, moms deserve something to honor the fact that they've made it home with a new baby, to celebrate the new family or to help them through those tough, new-baby days. And though push presents are usually given to new moms, Dad (or whoever else) might deserve a little something, too.

And while all baby gifts are appreciated, the best push presents are the ones that keep in mind that a parent is a person separate from the newborn. That's why jewelry remains the most popular gift for new moms — even if there's a baby monogram or birthstone, there's no sharing involved. Pampering gifts, like spa sets and lotions, also work because there's the expectation that the parent will get some "me time" in which to use them, too. And then there are those gifts that help make those first few weeks extra cozy, which really helps during those early sleepless nights.
