13Hang Ornaments on a Tree
Mike GartenIt only takes a few ingredients — water, salt (table or coarse salt that has been pulsed through a grinder), flour and vegetable oil — to transform dough into ornaments for your Easter tree.
Follow these steps:
- Heat water until it's warm, not boiling.
- Add 1/2 cup salt and 1/2 cup warm water to a large bowl. Mix until the salt is fully incorporated. Add a few drops of food coloring, if you want to color your dough.
- Add 1 cup of all-purpose flour and mix until you have a crumbly dough, making sure to break up large clumps with a spoon or your fingers.
- Add 2 Tbsp of vegetable oil and mix with your hands until incorporated. Form the dough into a ball and cover tightly with plastic wrap. Set it aside for about 10 minutes.
- Lightly sprinkle your work area and rolling pin with cornstarch. Roll out the dough until it is about ⅛ - ¼" thick. Cut out egg shapes with a cookie cutter and make a small hole for hanging with a straw or skewer. You can press flowers, herbs or leaves into the dough to create an impression.
- Bake in a low oven (200ºF or lower) for about 2 hours or let air dry overnight. Once dry, paint the dough and hang it with ribbon.

- Thread each bead onto the floral wire, starting with the smallest and working your way up to the largest size.
- Bend the floral wire over and cut the excess. Cut a small bunch of the excelsior all one length using your scissors.
- Stick the excelsior into the top hole and if you want to add more than what fits in the hole, dab a little hot glue on the top of the bead and add more excelsior.
- Repeat steps 2-7 for your desired number of carrots. Tie together with a ribbon to make a bunch of carrots.
- Attach a ribbon onto the back with a few dabs of hot glue and hang the design on your door.
