We've been independently researching and testing products for over 120 years. If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission. Learn more about our review process.

We updated this article in March 2023 based on extensive testing done by the Good Housekeeping Institute and to make sure that all picks are currently in-stock.

Delicious and perfectly portable, granola bars can be a convenient snack when you're in a pinch. Typically made with a mixture of whole grains, nuts and dried fruit, they are a shelf-stable option that can be incredibly nutritious. But, granola bars aren't always synonymous with healthy. In fact, some varieties can have even more sugar than a candy bar.

That's why our team of registered dietitians at the Good Housekeeping Institute evaluated dozens of granola bars on the market, zoning in on ingredients, nutrition facts and flavor profiles. To make the cut, the best granola bars had to have a first ingredient made from a whole grain or whole food (i.e. oats, bran, legumes, etc). The ingredients list as a whole is important, as well as where any sweeteners are coming from. We prioritized options with 300 calories or less, with most ranging in the 150 to 250 calories range, and a cap of 8 grams of added sugar per bar (the equivalent of two teaspoons). Granola bars aren't known for high fiber and protein counts, but our nutrition pros say that it's important to aim for a good source of each, which is about 3 grams of fiber and 5 grams of protein per serving to keep you full and satisfied.

You can learn more about how we evaluate granola bars at the end of this guide. Looking for other nutritious items to add to your grocery list? Check out our favorite high protein snacks and our top picks for the best protein bars.

How we chose the best healthy granola bars

double line break

Granola bars are notoriously tasty but not necessarily the healthiest snack on the shelf — in fact, most have well over 10 grams of added sugar per serving. Our food and nutrition experts, including registered dietitians in the Good Housekeeping Institute Nutrition Lab, rigorously evaluate thousands of snack samples year-round. For granola bars, we reviewed over 50 bars and specifically looked for choices with no more than 300 calories per serving and a maximum of 8 grams of added sugar (the equivalent of two teaspoons) per serving.

We also feel that fiber and protein is important to help keep you full and balance out the bar's nutrition, which is why we prioritized choices with 3 grams of fiber and protein or more per serving. Sodium counts were kept under 230mg per serving too, with most of our choices meeting the low-sodium threshold of under 140mg sodium per bar. The second part of our tests involved real-life testers just like you. We sent the bars to testers across the nation for feedback on taste, texture and overall flavor profile and quality.

What to look for when shopping for the best healthy granola bars

double line break

Are you looking for a bar free from peanuts and other common allergens? Maybe you want something high-protein to refuel post-workout. Perhaps you want a healthier dessert alternative that still gives a sweet chocolatey taste. Here are a few things to keep in mind when selecting the best granola bar for you:

✔️ Flavor: Since flavor is subjective, it's worth trying variety packs from the brands to see which flavors work for you. Even if you normally prefer chocolate flavored bars, you may be surprised by the flavor profiles on a lemon poppyseed bar or a birthday cake flavor to change things up.

✔️ Texture: Another important factor to consider, texture is just as (if not more) important than flavor profile of the snack you choose. You may prefer a softer bar, or one with lots of crunchy nuts and seeds. Maybe you're looking for a bar that won't melt in your bag or crumble when eaten.

✔️ Nutrition profile: If you're trying to manage your weight, you may prefer a lower calorie bar but be sure that it has a decent amount of fiber and protein to keep you full. Those looking to fuel up pre-workout may go for an option that has little fiber and more carbohydrates for a quick source of energy. The ideal nutrition profile will vary based on your individual nutritional needs.

✔️ Allergens: When it comes to allergens, look for special certifications or bars that are made in dedicated facilities which are typically considered safe to bring to school. Gluten-free claims can still contain traces of gluten due to cross-contamination in factories, so look for a Certified Gluten-Free stamp with strict third-party gluten-free standards.
