By now, you may have popped a CBD gummy to relieve stress, rubbed a CBD cream on your aching muscles or even tried CBD skincare — but should you use it in your vagina for more pleasurable sex? It may sound a little, um, weird, but sex experts are saying it’s worth a try.

“If you’re experiencing discomfort or pain during sex, CBD lube may relax, ease muscle tension and provide anti-inflammatory benefits,” says Mariah Freya, CEO and sex coach at Beducated.com. “When applied, CBD lube is absorbed right through the mucous membranes, leading to a gentle tingling and heightened sensations.” Shawna Starkman, MFT, a sex and intimacy psychotherapist, notes that “the combination of increased blood flow and decreased anxiety can be very beneficial for pleasurable engagement in solo or partnered intimacy.”

Our top picks:

As a reminder, CBD stands for cannabidiol and comes from cannabis plants and it is completely legal — but it’s not the same thing as THC, the ingredient in cannabis that can make you high. “CBD is non-intoxicating,” Freya says. Still, these lubricants are unique because CBD can have a warming, relaxing effect, she adds.

Best CBD Lube for Painful Sex

Toca Toto OIl

Toto OIl

Pros

  • Relieving effects
  • Soothing, warming sensation

Cons

  • Not everyone is a fan of the warming sensation

Toca Tota (intended for people with vaginas) has great reviews not just for its warming and stimulating qualities, but for how effective it is at relieving different types of discomfort. Some people even use it daily, just to enjoy how soothing it is, though the warming sensation may not be right for everyone.

There are several different reasons you might be experiencing pain during intercourse, including vaginal dryness and pelvic discomfort. “It's important to consider any specific issues or needs you may have, such as pain relief or relaxation,” says Aliyah Moore, Ph.D., certified sex therapist. Heads up that this oil-based lube shouldn't be used with latex condoms.

Best Scented CBD Lube

Foria Awaken

Awaken

Pros

  • Cinnamon and vanilla-scented
  • Users say it "doesn't get sticky" like other oils

Cons

  • Not compatible with latex

Starkman recommends the oil-based Foria Awaken Arousal, which contains botanical infusions that include organic cinnamon, ginger and vanilla, as well as cardamon, peppermint and cacao essential oils. No wonder one reviewer rhapsodizes that using the non-sticky Awaken Arousal “felt like I was surfing in a perpetual wave pool of yum.”

Because of its varied ingredient list, including coconut oil, it’s important for users with allergies to be cautious and keep in mind that, like all other oil-based lubes, this one isn't compatible with latex. “It's all about keeping things smooth and safe," says Freya.

It wins raves for enhancing foreplay and intercourse, and many reviewers find themselves entranced with the fragrance (but if strong scents aren’t your thing, you may want an oil with less of an aroma). Since it's oil-based, it can't be used with latex condoms.

Users love its scent, with notes of cardamom, sage and ginger. Kiskanu Hemp CBD Intimacy Oil

Hemp CBD Intimacy Oil

Pros

  • Simple, natural ingredients

Cons

  • Can cause stains

Featuring the calendula herb (also known as the “pot marigold,” not because of any CBD-affiliations but because the tasty flower has historically been used for soups and stews), and virgin cold-pressed sunflower, coconut and jojoba oils, Kiskanu’s intimacy oil is great for addressing dryness, whatever the cause may be (menopause, chronic vaginal dryness, etc.). Some reviewers caution the lube can cause staining, though.

Best Multi-Use CBD Lube

Moon Mother CBD Intimacy Oil

CBD Intimacy Oil

Pros

  • Can be used as massage oil and lube
  • Natural ingredients

Cons

  • On the pricey side for a small bottle

A clinical herbalist founded the woman-owned CBD company Moon Mother, and it shows in its ingredients that claim to be sustainably made, organic and cruelty-free. The brand's intimacy oil says it's mild enough to use every day use for vaginal wellness; it can also be used as a massage oil. However it is pricey, and with its multitude of oils — including coconut, calendula, rose and full-spectrum hemp extract — it’s not safe for latex condoms.

Best CBD Lube for Latex Condoms

Quim Smooth Operator

Smooth Operator

Pros

  • Can be used with latex condoms
  • Has antiseptic properties

Cons

  • Pricey

Quim’s Smooth Operator serum is an outlier among CBD lubes because it’s actually latex-safe — rather then being oil-based, it's aloe vera-based. Another benefit of its aloe vera component is that the compound has natural antiseptic properties, making it a great choice for those who experience pain during intercourse. The trade-off? Its high price tag.

Huile D'Amour Spray Lubricant

Spray Lubricant

Pros

  • Includes two types of cannabinoids
  • Safe for ingestion

Cons

  • Not recommened for those with nut allergies

Not only is this lubricant safe for oral play, you’re actually encouraged to ingest it — the directions claim that spraying it in your mouth may have aphrodisiac effects. Huile D’Amour (which translates to “oil of love") comes in a sleekly discreet bottle and contains both CBD as well as CBG (another type of cannabinoid). A collection of essential oils, including grapeseed, coconut, sweet almond and evening primrose, help make this serum extra slick, although it's a no-go for those with nut allergies or for use with latex condoms.

Her Highness Pleasure Oil

Pleasure Oil

Pros

  • Uses broad spectrum CBD
  • High potency blend

Cons

  • Takes 20 minutes to work

This CBD oil from a female-based cannabis company is marketed as an "orgasm intensifier." It contains Delta-8 and a South American medicinal plant touted for increasing lubrication, in an olive oil base (which means it's not safe for use with latex). The two women founders recommend you rub on a few drops, engage in some foreplay and then wait for the sparks to fly, though keep in mind it can take up to 20 minutes to kick in.

Foria Intimacy Sex Oil with CBD

Intimacy Sex Oil with CBD

Pros

  • Simple ingredients
  • Large bottle

Cons

  • Expires faster than others

There’s a lot to love about this popular sex oil, another offering from Foria. It's larger than most comparable offerings and its only ingredients are 400 mg broad-spectrum CBD and organic coconut oil (which, like other oil-based lubes, shouldn't be used with latex).

Reviewers love the warm, slippery sensation it provides and praise it as being especially useful for relieving the discomfort of vaginal pain. But unlike some lubricants, which seem to have a shelf-life equal to standard pharmacy items, this one can expire quickly (which is a good excuse to use it up, fast!).

What are the benefits of CBD lube?

listicle linebreak

There have not yet been any major clinical studies on how CBD works as a vaginal (or anal) lubricant. In fact, because CBD was only legalized in 2018, there aren’t many rigorous studies on it at all, and the ones that have been published are mainly about CBD that is taken orally. However, anecdotal stories suggest that there may be a relaxing effect.

In any case, the lubricant itself — whatever the ingredients — may make sex more pleasurable by virtue of how the CBD and other oils result in a soft, slippery, enduring lube. “There are studies indicating that topical CBD may offer benefits for skin issues, pain and inflammation, but more comprehensive research is needed to confirm its effectiveness and safety,” notes Freya, who advises opting for reputable products only (one way to ensure quality is to look for Certificate of Analysis or third-party testing).

What type of CBD lube should I use?

listicle linebreak

As with any kind of lube, many experts advise against using water-based solutions. Starkman says that water-based lubes wash away quickly (not always desirable!), can be sticky and tacky, and don’t have lasting power. “For penetration with body parts, oil-based lubes can feel silky and smooth, and in general they don’t feel as cold as water-based," says Starkman. However, keep in mind that “oil-based lubes cannot be used with latex condoms, as it breaks down the latex, and they shouldn’t really be used for silicone toys,” Starkman warns.

The concentration of CBD oil in the lubricant is also a critical factor to consider,” says Moore. “Different products may contain varying levels of CBD, and it may require some experimentation to find the right concentration that works for you.” Moore adds that texture and scent should also be taken into account.

Are there any risks to using CBD lube?

listicle linebreak

While CBD is generally well tolerated, Starkman suggests doing a patch test with the oil on a less-sensitive body part before using it, to test for potential irritants and allergens. People with tree nut allergies will want to take note that coconut oil is frequently a component of CBD lubes. And finally, remember again that if you are using latex condoms, do not use oil-based lubes.
