Though you could rely on a sleep app to help you improve your sleep habits or you could invest in a feature-rich smart watch to get a better idea of your overall health and wellness, a smart ring is another wearable worth considering.

These slim, discreet gadgets disguise themselves as rings but they're actually full of tech and sensors that make it easier than ever to track everything from your steps to sleep stages, heart rate and much more. What we love most about smart rings is that you’ll probably forget you’re even wearing one, and their unique design means you won’t have to worry about being distracted by notifications or having a bulky watch dig into your wrist.

The engineers and tech experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute have been testing fitness trackers for more than a decade, including everything from the Apple Watch Ultra to smart watches for men, Garmin watches and much more. Over the past year alone, we’ve been hands-on with more than 20 fitness trackers and smart rings to find the best ones on the market. When making our selections, we considered everything from a smart ring’s design, battery life, app interface and performance. Below you’ll find the best smart rings to consider buying, based on our evaluations and rave consumer reviews.

Oura Ring Gen3

Gen3

Pros

  • Comfortable and easy to use
  • Intuitive app interface
  • Sleek design available in several finishes
  • Features period prediction

Cons

  • Access to all insights requires a monthly subscription

When you think of smart rings, the Oura ring is probably the first that comes to mind. Our experts have rigorously tested it since its debut, and we agree that it's worth the hype and why it earned a Good Housekeeping 2023 Fitness Award and 2024 Fitness Award.

Not only were we impressed by how effectively the Oura ring tracked sleep and other key stats like heart rate and body temperature, but testers found the app extremely intuitive and easy to use, noting that they liked how various metrics are broken down into overall scores, including readiness (a holistic picture of your health), sleep, activity and, most recently, resilience. We also appreciate the long battery life, which consistently lasted at least up to five days in our tests.

We also love that it comes in two styles (a plateau-design Horizon and a round Heritage) and a variety of beautiful finishes, including everything from rose gold to a velvety brushed titanium. Its sleek design has no trouble blending in with jewelry, and we appreciate that it's water resistant so you can take it swimming or into the shower without having to think twice. The only downside: For access to all insights available in the app, you'll have to pay a $5.99 per month subscription.

Pros

  • Slim, lightweight design
  • Easy to use app
  • No subscription required

Cons

  • Bulky charging case

Available in silver, black and gold, the RingConn features a noticeably slim, lightweight and comfortable design that our experts immediately appreciated. It's available in a wide range of sizes, and according to the brand battery life should last up to 7 days.

While the initial price isn't the lowest we've seen, we love that you can access all metrics the ring tracks in the app without a subscription, including heart rate, blood oxygen, sleep, activity monitoring and more. We found navigating the app easy to use and intuitive, and only wish the provided charging case wasn't quite so bulky.

Pros

  • Sleek design
  • Intuitive app
  • Compact charging case

Cons

  • Not compatible with iPhones

One of Samsung's latest product additions is the Galaxy Ring, and Android enthusiasts couldn't be more excited. While it's not compatible with iPhones, the ring impressed our pros with its slim, minimalist design and elegant finish in gold, silver or black. Much like other smart rings, it's packed with three sensors to help you get a more holistic view of your health via the Samsung Health app on your phone.

Our pros found navigating the health dashboard to be seamless and we were especially fond of the heart rate tracker that was frequently updated for the most accurate reads. We also liked seeing a daily energy score in the app, which helps you find the right balance between rest and activity. We also like the clear, attractive case that's compact enough to fit into your purse or bag.

Amazfit Helio Ring

Pros

  • Durable construction
  • Pairs with Amazfit smart watches

Cons

  • Battery life could be improved

Fitness enthusiasts will be drawn to this durable smart ring from Amazfit that, according to the brand, can withstand being submerged in up to 100 meters of water. It's designed to help athletes optimize their performance with quality recovery and does so by tracking metrics like heart rate, SpO2, stress and more. It also syncs with third-party apps (Adidas Running, Strava, etc.) for a more comprehensive view of your fitness performance.

What's unique about this smart ring is that you can wear it alongside one of Amazfit's several smart watches and review all your metrics in one single app. Data from your watch and ring will merge for the most precise feedback, so you can wear the watch during the day and your ring at night. Our pros do wish, however, that battery life was longer than the claimed 4 days and that it was offered in other finishes.

Pros

  • Features alarm clock and physical button for extra features
  • Lightweight, slim design

Cons

  • Sizing kit not included

Track your heart rate, breathing rate, temperature, blood oxygenation and other health metrics with this feature-rich smart ring that keeps tabs on your activity 24/7. It weighs under 2 grams, making it the lightest pick on this list. Our pros like that you can analyze your performance and access recommendations for improvement through the app, where you'll find other data like energy scores, wellness graphs and sleep cycles.

It's also available for purchase with (or without) a silent vibration feature that is intended to wake you up gently during your lightest sleep stage. We do wish, though, that the sizing kit was included free of charge (it's $5 extra).

How we test smart rings

linebreak

Relying on our decades of experience testing health trackers in the health and wellness space, our experts first extensively research the most popular smart rings on the market as well as any newcomers announced at trade shows like CES. We then evaluate each smart ring for performance and tracking capabilities, scoring everything from battery life to the device's ability to accurately gather health, wellness and fitness metrics.

We've been hands-on with at least seven smart rings over the past year. By wearing smart rings ourselves, we're able to evaluate factors like ease of setup, connectivity, comfort, design, app intuitiveness and more. Lastly, whenever possible, we consider feedback for our panel of consumer testers who we ask to wear, work out and sleep in smart rings to give us a better idea of how they feel, perform and handle everyday wear and tear.

What to consider when shopping for a smart ring

linebreak

✔️ Comfort: First and foremost, your smart ring should be comfortable. It should fit securely on your finger, but not so tight that you have trouble removing it at the end of the day. Most smart ring manufacturers offer free sizing kits so you can test the size before making your final purchase.

✔️ Design: A slim, sleek ring design is typically preferred by most shoppers. Look for a lightweight ring in your favorite finish so it blends in with your other jewelry.

✔️ Durability: If you plan on wearing your smart ring to the pool, shower, hot tub and more, double-check with the manufacturer whether it can withstand such exposure. Most smart rings list an IP rating, which indicates to what degree it can handle water exposure or submersion in addition to contact with other elements like dirt, sand, etc. The first number refers to solids while the second number refers to liquids; as a rule of thumb, the higher the number, the more protection you can expect.

✔️ Budget:
Some smart rings require a subscription to access all data and metrics that are tracked. Make sure to consider whether this is within your budget before making a purchase.

✔️ Device compatibility:
Because smart rings don’t feature their own interface, you’ll have to rely on a third-party app. Make sure that your ring is compatible with iOS or Android, or your preferred device.

Why choose a smart ring instead of a fitness tracker?

linebreak

"Smart rings can help track essential metrics related to health, sleep, wellness, fitness and more," says Stefani Sassos, M.S., R.D.N., C.S.O., C.D.N., NASM-CPT and GH's resident personal trainer. Though smart rings and fitness trackers share a lot in common when it comes to tracking these metrics, you might prefer one over the other.

“One of the differences is that a smart ring tends to have no display or a very tiny display, and it needs to be controlled through another device, such as your smartphone,” Sassos says. “Smartwatches tend to have a decent size display and can typically be controlled directly on the device screen.” If you like being able to receive notifications directly on your device, then a smart ring might not be the best choice for you. With a smart ring, you'll access any data or information that was collected through your smartphone as opposed to on the device itself.

Another major difference is the design. “Smart rings tend to be more comfortable and inconspicuous than smartwatches, making them a bit more seamless and convenient to wear, especially for long periods of time,” Sassos says. “They’re also generally lighter and can be easier to sleep with if you are looking to track sleep data overnight.” If you don't like wearing a watch in general, a smart ring could be a great choice since it still offers many of the perks of a smartwatch or fitness tracker.

While she's been wearing the Oura Ring since 2022, it's not uncommon to find her sporting multiple wearables on her wrists and fingers.

Stefani Sassos, GH's Nutrition Lab Diredctor, has been working in the fitness industry for the past decade, specializing in indoor cycling and strength training. As a NASM-certified personal trainer, she uses her expertise and exercise science knowledge to create informed fitness content for Good Housekeeping. She loves that smart rings are a discreet and practical way to track metrics and prioritize holistic health.
