A favorite among celebrities like Jennifer Aniston, Kerry Washington and Hailey Bieber, Pilates offers a low-impact yet high-intensity workout that strengthens deep muscles and has been shown to improve everything from flexibility to posture. While the method has been around for nearly a century, its popularity has surged in recent years thanks to its effectiveness.

However, if you're looking to elevate your practice and notice that those pricey boutique classes are adding up, investing in a home reformer may be a worthwhile option. "A Pilates reformer helps to build strength, tone muscles (especially the small stabilizers), work on balance and improve your core and posture as well as your mental health," says Marisa Fuller, a Certified Pilates Instructor and owner of Studio Pilates in Brooklyn and North Carolina. "It is a wonderful workout that is perfect for all ages."

To help you find the best options, we tested and reviewed over 30 Pilates reformers for home use, evaluating everything from cost and durability to ease of use and effectiveness. We also interviewed a panel of Pilates professionals for their recommendations.

Balanced Body Allegro 2

Allegro 2
Credit: Balanced Body

Pros

  • Sleek, sophisticated design
  • Highly adjustable and versatile features
  • Also available with an add-on leg lift or tower

Cons

  • Expensive

This premier model from Balanced Body checks all the boxes for a quality Pilates reformer. Our fitness pros appreciate its sleek design, durable construction and adjustable features that make it ideal for a wide range of Pilates movements.

The included footbar alone offers four vertical positions and nine horizontal positions, along with a textured cover that enhances grip and stability (which can be especially useful during those advanced or challenging exercises). You'll also find five springs for customizable resistance, a three-position headrest and removable risers and shoulder rests for added versatility in setup and use. You also have the option to upgrade the Allegro 2 with either a 14-inch leg lift or a full tower setup (at an additional cost), though we feel that the base model alone provides more than enough functionality for most users.

Our experts deemed the Allegro our best overall pick since it is well-made, relatively easy to adjust and a good quality product for the price (which, while not cheap, is moderate compared to some other high-end reformers on the market). Reviewers consistently praised its easy setup, durability and adjustable features. However, note that the machine is on the heavier side, which is reflective of its high-quality build, so it's best suited for a dedicated home gym space where it won't need to be moved around regularly.

Pros

  • Also best foldable
  • Includes cardio rebounder
  • Four levels of resistance

Cons

  • Sits on the ground
  • Cords instead of springs

Those looking to build lean muscle without breaking the bank will appreciate this comprehensive reformer that can do the job at a more affordable price than many others on the market. It features four levels of resistance via two standard cords – one light and one heavy – and comes with a padded footbar that can be swapped out for an included cardio rebounder to add variety to your workouts. The head and neck rest is adjustable, too.

Reviewers noted that the reformer is well-built for the price and easy to assemble, making it a good choice for Pilates novices who may not want to splurge or commit to a more expensive machine. Another standout is that the reformer folds to save space when not in use, making it a smart choice for small spaces.

However, it's worth noting that the machine sits directly on the floor and does not include legs or a stand, which may limit some of the movements you can do. You'll also notice that the system uses cords and not traditional springs, which may take some getting used to if you typically use a model with springs in most Pilates studios. That said, it's still a great deal for the price and offers solid functionality, versatility and a great entry point into Pilates reformer training at home.

At Home SPX Reformer Bundle

Pros

  • Sturdy and durable
  • Includes a variety of compatible accessories like a reformer box
  • Highly adjustable and customizable

Cons

  • Can't be upgraded for a vertical frame

Serious Pilates fans will appreciate this fully loaded, professional-grade system from Merrithew, which comes equipped with five springs (four with 100% tension and one with 50% tension), along with spring covers to help minimize noise during your workouts. Our top pick for the best Pilates reformer system is a bundle that includes a variety of accessories. Our experts note that the reformer itself offers six carriage stopper positions, four footbar positions and three settings on both the headrest and the gearbar, providing a truly customizable Pilates experience.

A standout feature is the inclusion of a reformer box, which adds additional height for enhanced range of motion, whether you're sitting or lying on the reformer. Pilates professionals we consulted noted that this addition is particularly helpful for those who need modifications due to knee or hip flexor limitations. This model's high level of adjustability not only promotes better form but also helps maximize performance, whether you're a Pilates novice or advanced athlete. Just note that it is best suited for individuals between five and six feet tall.

Reviewers described it as sturdy and high-quality, and many appreciated that it requires minimal assembly right out of the box. Keep in mind that while this model does not support a vertical frame upgrade, Merrithew offers other reformer systems with that capability if it's a must-have for your setup.

Pros

  • Larger cardio rebounder
  • Can be stored vertically and has wheels for easy transport
  • Stylish wooden trim

Cons

  • Does not fold

If you're looking for a few more bells and whistles beyond our best value pick but don't want to splurge on a high-end machine, the AeroPilates Reformer XP557 offers an excellent balance of affordability and an upgraded design. It features a sleek wooden trim that can complement any home gym setup.

This model features four heavy-duty resistance springs and a larger cardio rebounder, making it ideal for both strength training and cardio workouts. The headrest and padded footbar both offer three adjustable positions, allowing for comfort and customization. You'll work from a platform that is about 15 inches off the ground, which one Pilates pro told us supports a wider range of motion across a variety of movements. Reviewers say that the machine is well-constructed, sturdy and effective. Although the reformer doesn't fold like our best value pick, this model is equipped with transport wheels and can be stored vertically, making it more convenient than it might first appear. Your Reformer The Original

The Original
Credit: Your Reformer

Pros

  • Sophisticated design with multiple finishes
  • Popular reformer brand in Australia
  • Foldable version and rental option also available

Cons

  • Expensive

A leading Pilates reformer brand in Australia, Your Reformer is now available in the continental U.S. The sleek, high-end wooden design initially drew us in. Since this model is new to the U.S., we haven't had the opportunity to test it yet, but we plan to trial it soon. However, given its positive online reviews, we felt it was worth spotlighting.

It's available in two different frame colors, along with three upholstery variations so that you can choose the right aesthetic for your home gym. Features include five resistance springs, a five-position footbar, a three-position headrest and double-loop padded straps for hands and feet. At first glance, we appreciate that it has wheels, allowing you to move it around your home gym as needed. If you are looking for even more portability, the brand offers a foldable option, which can be smart for small spaces. You can even opt for a $39 per week rental model, which is comparable in cost to a single Pilates class. If you buy it outright, it's not the most expensive model on our list, but at nearly $3,000, it's still a big investment.

A corresponding app has over 700 expert-led classes, ranging from reformer and mat Pilates to physio-led programs and injury recovery classes. Your Reformer also makes a variety of Pilates props, including a ring, ball and resistance bands, all available on Amazon.

Best Cadillac

Faittd Pilates Reformer

Pilates Reformer
Credit: Faiitd

Pros

  • Cadillac design allows for more exercises
  • Highly adjustable
  • Durable and well-made frame

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Takes up a lot of space

Serious Pilates pros may be interested in a Cadillac-style reformer, which includes a trapeze-style frame and additional loops, bars and attachments for a more advanced and varied workout. These extra components allow the body to be suspended in different positions, which multiplies the range of possible exercises you can do compared to traditional reformer or mat Pilates workouts.

While Cadillac-style reformers in general are a significant investment and require ample space, this five-spring model from Faittd is both well-made and durable, supporting you through hardcore Pilates workouts. Our experts especially appreciate that the machine has numerous adjustable features and a large, padded jump board for a well-rounded workout. The sturdy push-through bar covers provide a secure grip, and the stability swing allows for even more versatility in Pilates exercises. The set also includes a large, padded box to further enhance the machine's functionality.

There is no doubt that seasoned Pilates athletes will appreciate all that this complete system has to offer. But if you don't have the space or budget for something like this, you can purchase the Tower model or just the standard reformer from the brand.

Lagree Fitness The Micro

The Micro
Credit: Lagree

Pros

  • Lightweight and portable
  • Great for small spaces
  • Accommodates users up to 6’8”

Cons

  • Not as many special features as larger reformers on our list

Founded by Sebastian Lagree, Lagree Fitness is known for its high-intensity, low-impact workout method designed to build strength, endurance and core stability. Performed on a machine similar to a Pilates reformer, the method uses slow, controlled movements to keep muscles under constant tension. It has earned a devoted following, with celebrity fans including Nicole Kidman, Gwyneth Paltrow and Kelsea Ballerini.

For those who can't make it to a Lagree studio or just prefer the convenience of working out at home, the brand offers this compact and surprisingly versatile Micro reformer. Available on Amazon, this small-but-mighty machine can accommodate individuals as tall as 6'8" and can be stored under a bed or against a wall when not in use. It features four resistance springs, ranging from extra light to heavy, and sits low to the ground, so you'll feel supported and stable throughout your workout.

Lagree recently launched the new Micro Pro, which is equipped with tension-packed springs for even more intensity. It's heavier, larger and taller than the original Micro, but more versatile (though it does come at a higher price point of $1,590). Users can also access Lagree's on-demand platform for Micro Pro-specific classes.

LIT Method Strength Machine Performance Pack

Strength Machine Performance Pack
Now 42% Off
Credit: LIT Method

Pros

  • Rower, reformer and resistance trainer all-in-one
  • Durable and sturdy machine
  • Sleek, sophisticated design

Cons

  • Optional membership available at additional cost for on-demand classes
  • Not exclusively designed for Pilates, so some movements may be limited

If you're going to splurge on a large piece of equipment, such as a Pilates reformer, why not choose one that supports multiple types of workouts? This unique and effective rowing machine from LIT (which stands for Low Impact Training) doubles as a Pilates reformer and strength training tool, offering a versatile piece of exercise equipment for any home gym. While you'll need to opt for the higher-priced Performance Pack option to access the LIT ankle cuffs required for their signature Pilates classes, you can also complement your Pilates sessions with cardio and strength training all on this innovative machine. For the price, you're essentially getting three pieces of equipment in one.

A previous Good Housekeeping Fitness Award winner, testers and experts alike loved the versatility and multi-functionality of the machine. One expert noted that it not only felt solid but also looked great in a home gym space, too. Despite weighing only about 70 pounds without water (for the rower), the machine supports users up to 450 pounds, which is the highest of most machines we evaluated. Plus, it can accommodate users up to 6'9". When not in use, it can be stored vertically to save space.

For additional guidance and Pilates classes, you can subscribe to LIT's on-demand class platform for $25 per month. While the machine doesn't have a built-in touchscreen, it does include a tablet holder, allowing you to stream classes from your own device. As a bonus, up to five individuals can share one LIT membership, making it a practical option for households with multiple fitness enthusiasts.

While the LIT Strength Machine supports Pilates exercises, it's not exclusively designed for them, so certain movements may feel limited. However, if you're looking for a more specialized experience, LIT recently introduced a dedicated luxury Pilates reformer – a great option if you don't need the full versatility of the Strength Machine. We're looking forward to getting our hands on this newer model for long-term testing.

How we chose the best Pilates reformers

testing frame fitness reformer springs and buttons
Good Housekeeping

At the Good Housekeeping Institute, our fitness experts test exercise equipment year-round, ranging from e-bikes to exercise bikes and treadmills. For this guide, we researched over 30 reformer machines, prioritizing models that are user-friendly, durable and effective.

Our team conducted hands-on and virtual demos and visited Pilates studios across New York City and Long Island to experience the machines in real-life class settings. This allowed us to evaluate how each model performed during a range of Pilates sessions and movements.

We also looked at user ratings and long-term reviews to understand how these machines hold up over time. To round out our evaluation, we consulted a panel of certified Pilates professionals to get their expert insight and recommendations.

We prioritized models with a sturdy frame, easily adjustable springs and ergonomic handles and attachments. Our top picks include budget-friendly items for those new to Pilates, as well as higher-end options with more features for those seeking an intense workout. We also included options that fold for smaller spaces.

What to look for when shopping for a Pilates reformer

testing the frame fitness reformer for good housekeeping
Good Housekeeping

According to Fuller, key features of a well-made Pilates reformer include a stable frame, solid construction, strong springs, and a well-cushioned carriage. Beyond these essentials, consider the following factors.

✔️ Cost: Reformers are a significant investment, so it's important to research thoroughly and ensure that the model fits your budget, space and exercise needs. While a higher price tag doesn't always guarantee better performance, our evaluations found that more expensive reformer models often offered superior quality, more advanced features and useful accessories.

✔️ Dimensions: Carefully check the height, length and width of the machine to make sure that you have enough space around it for safe and comfortable movement. You'll want to ensure that you have room to walk around the machine and perform movements that require stretching out your arms or legs past the edges of the reformer (especially with the footbar fully extended). If space is tight, consider angling the reformer diagonally to make the most of the available area. Also, review the machine's height and weight limits to ensure you feel secure and supported during your workouts.

✔️ Warranty: Since a Pilates reformer is a long-term investment, look for models that offer lifetime or competitive warranties, especially on the frame. A solid warranty can provide peace of mind and help you get the most use out of your machine.

✔️ Content: Even experienced Pilates pros may benefit from guided classes. Some reformers offer a corresponding app or library of classes that can be streamed from another device during your workout. Just keep in mind that this additional content may incur a separate membership fee, which is an important consideration when making your decision.

What is Pilates?

linebreak

Developed by Joseph Pilates, the exercise method combines core stabilization, strength, flexibility, balance and proper alignment with concepts like mindfulness, breathing techniques and fluidity of movement.

The workout was initially designed to help injured athletes and dancers return to exercise safely and maintain their fitness moving forward. Using a combination of simple repetitive exercises, Pilates recruits deep core muscles and builds full-body strength.

The method can be performed on a mat using bodyweight resistance or on a reformer machine that incorporates springs and accessories for added resistance and versatility.

What is a Pilates reformer?

linebreak

A Pilates reformer is a large piece of equipment that resembles a padded table, featuring a sliding carriage, adjustable springs, ropes, pulleys and a sturdy frame. They can be made from different materials, including steel, aluminum, wood and more.

"The Pilates reformer looks like a narrow bed frame with a carriage in the center that is on wheels to move up and down," Fuller says. "The carriage is attached on one end by a set of springs that are used for resistance with the body for each exercise." She explains that shoulder rests are located toward the top of the carriage to keep people from sliding off the reformer, and that above the springs is a footbar that is adjustable up and down for various exercises.

Here's a breakdown of key reformer components:

  • Moving carriage: A flat, cushioned surface that is designed to move forward and backward. Many include shoulder blocks for added comfort and stability.
  • Front platform: A stable area housing springs to adjust tension. It may also feature an adjustable bar for more Pilates variations.
  • Back platform: Another flat, stable area used for positioning or support. This section may include shorter straps with handles and adjustable bars.
  • Springs: Usually color-coded to indicate different levels of resistance. Note that lighter springs don't always mean easier, as increased core stability will be required.
  • Straps: Longer straps, usually found near the carriage, are used for balance and stability exercises, while shorter straps are designed for more tension-driven exercises.

How does reformer Pilates differ from mat Pilates?

double line break

Mat Pilates is performed on the floor, using your own body weight for resistance, while reformer Pilates takes place on an elevated platform equipped with springs, straps, and a sliding carriage to add variety to the workout.

"Mat Pilates is the basis of Pilates exercise as it incorporates the fundamentals of Pilates movement and techniques, including how to engage the core and use intentional breathwork. It relies mostly on body weight exercises," says Triana Brown, director of talent and product development for Solidcore, a Pilates-style fitness studio.

Brown adds that reformer Pilates incorporates low-impact, slow and controlled movements to target specific muscle groups on a machine. "The reformer allows you to perform a wide range of exercises in many different body positions (including lying down, standing, sitting, kneeling and more) and exercise with a variety of weight loads."

What are the benefits of owning a Pilates reformer?

double line break

If you frequently go to Pilates classes and boutique fitness studios, it may be in your best interest to invest in a reformer for your home gym. Some Pilates reformer benefits can include:

  • Convenience: You'll be able to exercise in the comfort of your own home and, most importantly, on your own schedule. The convenience alone is a huge benefit of having the machine in your space.
  • Versatility: Mat Pilates is certainly effective, but a reformer allows for even more exercise variations, whether it's lying, sitting, standing or kneeling.
  • Value: If you have other household members who want to use the machine, that can also be an added benefit and justify the cost.
  • Full body strength: From toning muscles to building strength, reformer Pilates offers a comprehensive workout that helps develop a strong core and tone a variety of major muscle groups. "The use of a reformer will lead to more impactful results," Brown says. "With consistency, you will experience an increase in physical strength, coordination and balance and be less prone to injury."

How often should you use a Pilates reformer?

double line break

About three to four times a week is ideal to really see a difference, according to Fuller. "However, I always say that even if someone is only able to practice once a week, that is better than not coming at all," she says. Ultimately, consistency is key to achieving true results from the method (or any exercise program, for that matter).

Is buying a Pilates reformer worth it?

double line break

The answer ultimately depends on how often you plan to use the machine and whether any other members of your household will also be able to take advantage of it. With reformer Pilates classes often costing upwards of $30 a session, the expense can add up quickly if you're a regular.

If you're on the fence about investing in one, consider a lower-priced but still high-quality model like our Best Value pick. "If someone has the room for a reformer in their house, I will always say it is worth it," Fuller says. "However, you do need to make sure you are well-versed in the movements so you do not get injured."

For beginners, it's a good idea to work with a certified Pilates instructor, either in person or virtually, to learn proper form and become comfortable with the machine. This helps ensure safety and sets a strong foundation for long-term results.
