I'm all for a show-stopping gas range and a sprawling island, but if there's one appliance that quietly screams "luxury kitchen," it's the built-in refrigerator. Unlike standard fridges that jut out past cabinetry, built-in fridges are designed to sit flush with the counters — no gaps or uneven edges. You can even clad some models in custom paneling to blend in with the rest of the kitchen cabinetry, so the fridge practically disappears.

The result? A kitchen that feels both polished and professionally designed. But all that comes at a cost: Built-in fridges are typically more expensive than freestanding options. Beyond aesthetics, however, built-ins also tend to offer more customizable options, such as the ability to have water and ice dispensers or not, flexible drawers that switch between fridge and freezer temperatures and multiple door panel options.

If you're ready to invest, we're here to help you make the right choice. At the Good Housekeeping Institute's Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab, our experts have rigorously tested more than 50 refrigerators and surveyed nearly 2,000 consumers about their real-world experiences with various fridge brands. We evaluate temperature consistency, humidity control, energy use and the performance of each section of the fridge over time, among other factors.

While we haven't tested all the built-in fridges featured in this guide yet, we've pulled from top-rated models made by trusted brands that have consistently performed well in past GH testing. We've cross-checked user reviews, compared specs and considered a range of budgets to find the most reliable, stylish and storage-savvy built-in fridges.

    Sub-Zero 36-Inch Designer Over-and-Under Refrigerator

    36-Inch Designer Over-and-Under Refrigerator

    Pros

    • Customizable panel-ready design for seamless kitchen integration
    • Advanced cooling and air purification systems enhance food preservation
    • Flexible interior storage with adjustable shelves and compartments

    Cons

    • Lack of external water and ice dispensers may be inconvenient for some users

Sub-Zero is a leading American-based manufacturer based in Wisconsin and Arizona. The brand is renowned for its exceptional customer service and repair availability. The Designer line allows you to add your own front panel so it seamlessly integrates into the surrounding cabinetry.

A split cooling system maintains separate climates for the refrigerator and freezer compartments, ensuring optimal food preservation. Sub-Zero says its NASA-inspired air purification system actively removes ethylene gas and odors every 20 minutes, prolonging the freshness of stored foods.

As an owner of this fridge, I can vouch for its ability to keep a head of lettuce fresh for weeks (yes, weeks!) longer than you might think possible. Additionally, Sub-Zero is crafted with top-of-the-line materials designed to last for a long time. The shelves and bins are easy to clean and even easier to adjust.

Nicole Papantoniou, director of the Good Housekeeping Institute's Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab, appreciates how the glass shelves, door bins and flip-up dairy compartment offer flexible storage solutions.

The touch control panel and settings, including lighting and humidity levels, are easy to use. The refrigerator is also Wi-Fi enabled, allowing remote monitoring through the app. While there are options to add an internal water dispenser, this fridge does not have an external one.

Frigidaire Professional Series Side-by-Side Column Refrigerator and Freezer Set

Professional Series Side-by-Side Column Refrigerator and Freezer Set

    Pros

    • Spacious combined capacity
    • Flexible storage with adjustable shelving and bins
    • Competitive pricing for a built-in column set

    Cons

    • Reports of reliability issues post-warranty

This side-by-side configuration features a 33-inch refrigerator column and a 33-inch freezer column, offering a combined capacity of a substantial 38 cubic feet. The units feature a smudge-proof stainless steel finish on the outside and adjustable shelving and storage bins inside.

"The stainless steel back helps with temperature regulation," says Papantoniou. "I also like that it has multiple bins with dividers, and the interior looks elegant."

The crisper drawers help preserve the freshness of fruits and vegetables by automatically adjusting humidity levels via sensors that regulate the amount of moisture in the drawer. The EvenTemp Cooling System ensures consistent temperature throughout the compartments, reducing the likelihood of warm and cold spots.

While the set delivers on aesthetics and functionality, some users have reported concerns regarding long-term issues such as coolant leaks and difficulties obtaining replacement parts, particularly after the standard warranty expires. Potential buyers should consider extended warranty options.

    Café 48-Inch Built-in Side-by-Side Smart Refrigerator

    48-Inch Built-in Side-by-Side Smart Refrigerator

    Pros

    • Ample space for a side-by-side
    • Wi-Fi enabled
    • Multiple hardware finish options

    Cons

    • Side-by-side design means bending over to reach bottom shelf contents

This large-capacity refrigerator from GE's Café range has everything most people look for in a built-in fridge: a sleek, seamless design, useful smart controls and ample space for all your groceries.

Its side-by-side design provides more freezer space than a French-door fridge and better access to the freezer's contents. Thanks to its wide build, there's also a generous 17 cubic feet of fridge space, but it does require you to bend over to reach the bottom shelves.

The shelves and door bins are adjustable and can accommodate an assortment of ingredients, including tall wine bottles. The bins on the freezer door are also unique and help optimize storage.

Online reviewers love the fridge's quiet performance and variety of interior drawers and shelving that make organization easy. It's also equipped with GE's Wi-Fi Connect technology, so after you download the app, you can adjust settings and receive alerts if the door is open or if something needs repair. It works with Amazon Alexa, too.

While we haven't tested this built-in model, we've tested a couple of standalone Café fridges in both the Lab and with consumer testers. Overall, testers have been very happy with their performance and design.

    Pros

    • Panel-ready design for seamless look
    • Advanced cooling technologies for optimal food preservation
    • Internal water dispenser and ice maker

    Cons

    • Shallow door shelves may limit storage for larger items

This built-in model by Dacor features a panel-ready design, allowing it to seamlessly integrate into a variety of kitchen styles. Its total capacity of 21.3 cubic feet provides ample storage space for both fresh and frozen items, featuring two freezer drawers. A stainless steel back helps with temperature regulation.

Key features include drawers with adjustable temperature settings and a hidden touch control panel that looks sleek but is also easy to program.

The internal water dispenser and crescent-shaped ice maker add convenience without disrupting the exterior design. (The water dispenser is located on the inside of the left wall, and the ice maker stores ice in the freezer bin so you can scoop it out.) Additionally, the refrigerator is Wi-Fi enabled, allowing remote monitoring and control through compatible smart devices

Customer feedback highlights the refrigerator's tall design, making it suitable for users who prefer higher shelving. However, some users have noted that the door shelves are relatively shallow, which may limit storage options for larger bottles or jugs.

Freedom Collection 36-Inch Built-In Bottom Mount Smart Refrigerator

    Pros

    • Versatile drawer with multiple temperature settings
    • Panel-ready design
    • Internal water dispenser and ice maker

    Cons

    • Interior drawers feel less durable compared to other high-end refrigerators

Thermador's industrial-looking fridge is outfitted with lots of stainless steel, which should help keep the temperature stable.

The ThermaFresh Pro system ensures optimal temperature and humidity control to preserve the freshness of your produce. The middle flex drawer adds versatility, allowing you to switch between settings such as freezer, soft freeze, refrigerator, beverages, meat/fish, deli/cheese and cake. However, some users have noted that the interior drawers are less durable than other high-end refrigerators.

A panel-ready design allows you to install your own cabinet front, and this model enables true flush installation, which means no awkward protrusions or gaps where the fridge meets the neighboring cabinetry.

This model is Wi-Fi enabled, allowing remote monitoring and control through the app. The internal water dispenser and ice maker provide convenience without disrupting the clean exterior lines.

    Pros

    • Push2Open door mechanism
    • Crystal clear drawers
    • Food preservation systems keep foods fresh

    Cons

    • Touch controls aren't very intuitive
    • Shelves have limited adjustability

A column refrigerator is a built-in, full-height appliance that's either all refrigerator or all freezer (or even all wine fridge, unlike traditional fridge/freezer combos). Column units are designed to be modular and customizable, allowing homeowners to mix and match refrigerator and freezer columns side by side, separately or even in different areas of the kitchen.

Miele offers a premium design with sturdy features, and this column refrigerator provides ample space for storing fresh food storage. It features Miele's MasterFresh system, which maintains optimal temperature and humidity levels to keep food fresh and preserve its quality. The DynaCool system ensures uniform temperature distribution throughout the refrigerator, while an air filter helps prevent odors

"I like that it has a little floating shelf," says Papantoniou. "It comes in handy more often than you would think. Plus, the gliding drawers are crystal clear so that you can see inside easily."

The Push2Open door mechanism doesn't require a handle, providing a clean, uncluttered look. But, inside the fridge, some users have reported that the touch controls aren't very intuitive and the shelves have limited adjustability.

    Jenn-Air 36" Panel-Ready Built-In French Door Refrigerator

    36" Panel-Ready Built-In French Door Refrigerator
    Credit: Jenn-Air

    Pros

    • Stunningly beautiful
    • Keeps produce fresh for a long time
    • Thoughtfully lit interior

    Cons

    • Ice cubes sometimes fall out of the ice bin

This JennAir is a showstopper — both in aesthetics and performance. With its panel-ready design, this 36-inch French door refrigerator disappears seamlessly into custom cabinetry for a fully built-in look. (JennAir also sells its own drop-dead gorgeous custom panels.)

But the real magic happens when you open the doors. The black obsidian interior might seem unconventional at first, but it’s a total game-changer.

According to our tester, the dark finish makes food pop, making it easier to see what you’re looking for and giving everything inside a boutique-like glow under the dramatic lighting system. LED strips run up both sides and across the top, casting a spotlight on your produce, condiments and leftovers. Guests, especially design-minded ones, frequently comment on how striking the black interior is, and our tester agrees: “I have never loved a kitchen appliance more than this fridge.”

Looks aside, the JennAir performs exceptionally well where it really counts: keeping food fresh. The dual evaporator system creates separate sensor-controlled climates in the fridge and freezer, which, combined with JennAir’s Produce Preserver and air filter, extends the life of produce.

Our tester routinely leaves for weeks at a time and returns to fruits and vegetables that are still crisp and usable, calling the freshness retention “completely unheard of.”

Adjustable glass shelves and thoughtful organization make it easy to store and access food, and the interior is easy to clean — something made even more forgiving by the black finish, which never seems to show grime or smudges.

There are a few quirks. While the ice maker in the freezer produces what the tester calls “very fresh ice,” the window in the ice drawer occasionally allows cubes to spill out when grabbing a handful. Some broader user reviews have flagged issues with LED light failures and panel alignment during installation, though these weren’t part of our tester’s experience.

    Pros

    • Thoughtfully-designed compartments and flexible storage
    • Ultra-premium features
    • Customizable installation

    Cons

    • Very expensive

This refrigerator, available in stainless steel or panel-ready finishes, has garnered a Good Housekeeping Kitchen Gear Award. Its Signature Fit integrated design provides options for either flush or proud (slightly protruding) installation, eliminating the need for exposed grilles.

In our hands-on testing, it impressed us with its ample storage and thoughtfully designed compartments. It's perfect for large households or entertaining. Testers appreciated the versatility of the convertible drawer, which features five preset temperatures ranging from 41°F to -7°F, accommodating various storage needs, from beverages to meats.

An internal filtered water dispenser keeps the outside looking sleek, and the ice maker produces both regular everyday ice and elegant spherical ice for cocktails, which takes 18 to 24 hours to freeze. The inverter compressors and stainless steel interior work to minimize temperature fluctuations, ensuring optimal food preservation. Wi-Fi connectivity via the app enhances its functionality.

    How we test refrigerators

    double line break

The Good Housekeeping Institute's Kitchen Appliances Lab experts have been testing refrigerators for decades. We assess them for performance and ease of use and then continue to use them in our Lab, test kitchen and consumer homes to better assess their longevity.

    Good Housekeeping

✔️ Performance testing: We put refrigerators through rigorous usability tests.

    • Cooling precision: We often request third-party temperature testing results directly from brands and then monitor the temperature in various zones over time, highlighting any inconsistencies.
    • Food preservation: We test the crisper drawer by storing a head of romaine lettuce and fresh berries, tracking how well the drawer maintains freshness over time.

✔️ Ease of use. We evaluate this by examining the control panel for clarity and responsiveness, the readability of the owner's manual, the ergonomics of door handles and the design and functionality of shelves and drawers.

    • Customizability: Adjustable shelving and flexible storage options make a significant difference in accommodating awkward items, whether it's a tall bottle of sparkling water or a party tray that doesn't quite fit.

✔️ Real-world use: After completing our tests in the Lab, we continue using the refrigerators in our Test Kitchen and staff areas to see how they perform under everyday use. We also place units in real homes for long-term testing.

    • Survey: To round out our evaluations, we surveyed nearly 2,000 refrigerator owners about their experiences. Their feedback provided us with deeper insight into product reliability, user satisfaction and what matters most to consumers.

What to consider when choosing a built-in refrigerator

good housekeeping institute beauty lab eye makeup remover testing

✔️ Configuration: First, decide what type of built-in refrigerator you want:

    • Bottom-mount freezer refrigerators have the freezer located at the bottom of the appliance. The freezer could be one or more drawers or open like a door. Many prefer bottom-freezer fridges because they raise the refrigerator section to eye level, making it easier to access contents without bending. However, these models often have less overall freezer space than side-by-side models.
    • French-door refrigerators feature two doors that open from the center, providing sufficient horizontal space for large trays. Some also allow for customization in temperature zones and have built-in water and ice dispensers. French-door fridges are usually paired with bottom-mount freezers.
    • Side-by-side refrigerators have the fridge compartment on one side of the appliance and the freezer compartment on the other. These models are sometimes paired with multiple drawers or doors on each side. These are preferable for people who use their freezer often and want a lot of space and easy access to frozen goods. However, you'll have to bend to reach the bottom of both sides, and with narrower models, there's limited horizontal space for wide trays.
    • Column refrigerators do not include a freezer and are great as a second fridge. They're also ideal for those with a high volume of fresh and frozen goods that require separate units for each. You can pair a column refrigerator with a built-in wine fridge, a built-in or chest freezer or a regular fridge — the options are endless.

✔️ Dimensions: Built-in fridges must fit perfectly into your designated space, or you will lose the seamless look. While you shop, ensure the unit isn't too tall for your ceilings, that the compressor placement works with your kitchen and that the width and depth are correct. Custom installation will cost you, but it makes this process easier.

✔️ Finish: Most built-in fridges come in stainless steel or panel-ready finishes. "Panel-ready" means the unit can be customized with a panel to match your cabinetry. If you want your fridge to be nearly invisible, opt for panel-ready. However, if you have stainless steel finishes and a very modern kitchen, steel will suit you nicely. (Some also come in black stainless steel or have fingerprint-resistant finishes.)

✔️ Features: Consider the shelving and internal drawers to see if they work for your family's eating habits. If you like storing a few bottles of wine in the fridge, ensure there is ample height and/or adjustable shelving. Some fridges also offer humidity controls on crisper drawers, air purification to reduce spoilage and unpleasant odors, water and ice dispensers, smart connectivity and even flexible zones that can be used as either a fridge or a freezer. Focus on the model's quality, design and price, and then consider only bonus features you'll actually use.

Is a built-in fridge worth it?

good housekeeping institute beauty lab eye makeup remover testing

Investing in a built-in fridge can give your kitchen a streamlined, professional look. If you're remodeling your kitchen or entire home, a built-in fridge can be matched with your new cabinetry and will likely help raise the value of your property.

Because there are many different types of built-in fridges, you'll have many customization options. However, you'll need high enough ceilings, as most built-in fridges are around 7 feet tall. Note that built-in fridges also require professional installation, which can add to the cost.

If you have low ceilings or want to keep your fridge budget down, and to move and self-install your fridge, you should stick to a standard fridge. There is a wider variety of standard fridges on the market at various price points.

If you want your fridge to sit flush with your counters but don't have the ceiling height for a built-in model, you can opt for a regular counter-depth fridge.
