This Jewish yeasted bread is sweetened with sugar and honey, making it perfect for turning into French toast or simply eating by the slice. However you twist it, the loaf will bake up as impressive to behold as it is satisfying to dig into.
Ingredients

cups all-purpose flour, plus more if needed
- 3 Tbsp.
sugar
- 1 Tbsp.
instant yeast
- 2 tsp.
kosher salt
- 3/4 cup
warm water
- 5 Tbsp.
vegetable oil, plus more for greasing
- 2 Tbsp.
honey
- 2
whole large eggs plus 1 large egg, separated
Directions
- Step 1In bowl of stand mixer, whisk together flour, sugar, yeast and salt. Add warm water, oil, honey, 2 eggs and 1 yolk. Using dough hook attachment, mix on low until shaggy dough forms, 2 to 3 minutes. Increase speed to medium-low and mix, adding more flour 1 teaspoon at a time if dough is too sticky, until tacky (but not overly sticky) dough forms, 6 to 7 minutes.
- Step 2Transfer dough to large, lightly greased bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Let rise in warm place until doubled in size, 1 to 2 hours.
- Step 3Turn out dough onto lightly floured work surface and divide into 3 equal pieces. Roll each piece into 18-inch-long strand. Arrange strands vertically on a piece of parchment paper and pinch together at top to seal, then braid dough.
- Step 4Pinch bottom ends together, then tuck both ends underneath all of bread. Slide parchment onto baking sheet, cover loosely with plastic wrap and let rise again until puffy, at least 1 hour but no more than 1 hour 30 minutes.
- Step 5Toward end of rise time, heat oven to 375°F. In small bowl, whisk remaining egg white with 2 teaspoons water and thoroughly brush all over loaf, including crevices. Bake until deep golden brown, 30 to 35 minutes. Let cool 5 minutes on baking sheet, then transfer to wire rack to cool completely.
