At its most basic, simple syrup is made from equal parts water and sugar. We jazzed up that recipe with cherries, black peppercorns and lemon juice to create a sweet-tart elixir that instantly boosts any iced beverage. For even more oomph? Use lemon thyme or lemon basil to garnish your drink, or add a few sprigs as the cocktail syrup cools.

Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups
fresh or frozen pitted cherries
- 1/2 cup
sugar
- 1/2 cup
water
- 1 tsp.
black peppercorns, crushed
- 1 Tbsp.
fresh lemon juice
Lemonade, optional, for serving
Fresh cherries, optional, for serving
Directions
- Step 1In a small saucepan, combine cherries, sugar, water and peppercorns and simmer until cherries have broken down and mixture has thickened, about 20 minutes. Let cool to room temperature, then stir in lemon juice. Makes 1/2 cup.
- Step 2When ready to serve, fill a glass with crushed ice and lemonade, then top with 2 tablespoons syrup and 1 fresh cherry.
