Ingredients
Press-In Butter Crust in 9-inch pie plate
Walnut Crumbs
- 1 1/2 cups
walnuts
- 1/2 cup
all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup
sugar
- 1/4 tsp.
nutmeg
- tsp.
salt
- 3 Tbsp.
cold unsalted butter or margarine
Apple Filling
- 4 Tbsp.
butter or margarine
- 3 lb.
Golden Delicious apples
- 1/4 cup
sugar
- tsp.
salt
- 1
lemon
- 2 Tbsp.
honey
- 1 tsp.
chopped fresh thyme leaves
- 1/4 tsp.
nutmeg
Directions
- Step 1Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
- Step 2Bake crust 20 minutes or until golden brown. If crust puffs up, very gently push down bubbles with spoon without cracking crust. Cool on wire rack.
- Step 3Meanwhile, prepare Walnut Crumbs: In medium bowl, toss walnuts, flour, sugar, nutmeg, and salt until well mixed. Add butter and press into mixture with fingertips until small clumps form. (Crumbs can be covered and refrigerated up to 3 days ahead.)
- Step 4Prepare Apple Filling: In 12-inch skillet, melt butter on medium. Add sliced apples, sugar, and salt and cook 15 minutes or until tender and juicy, stirring occasionally.
- Step 5While apples cook, finely grate 1/2 teaspoon lemon peel and squeeze 1 tablespoon juice. In small bowl, stir together honey, thyme, nutmeg, and lemon peel and juice. Stir into cooked apples, then pour apple mixture into baked crust, spreading in even layer. Sprinkle walnut crumbs on top in even layer and gently press into apples.
- Step 6Bake 50 minutes to 1 hour or until crumbs are golden brown and apple mixture is bubbling, covering edges of pie crust if browning too quickly. Cool completely on wire rack.
