Super Good Baking for Kids

Pros

  • Includes the science of baking lessons
  • Creative recipes

Cons

  • Some reviewers found recipes too complicated

While some kids may groan at prepping carrots, most would probably jump at the chance to whip up (and eat!) cakes, cookies, pies and other confections. New York Times bestselling chef and host of Ace of Cakes and Kids Baking Championship Duff Goldman is the perfect teacher for your burgeoning baker: He weaves in science lessons (about yeast, for instance) and super-fun facts alongside creative baking recipes for every occasion. Give pizza night a sugary twist with stuffed-crust dessert pizza or add eye-catching color to classic cookies, like in confetti snickerdoodles. While the book is beloved by most customers (it averages 4.8 out of 5 stars with over 1,500 reviews), some found the recipes too complicated for younger or beginner chefs.

Emeril's There's A Chef In My Soup!: Recipes for the Kid in Everyone

Emeril's There's A Chef In My Soup!: Recipes for the Kid in Everyone

Pros

  • Classic recipes that even adults will love
  • Fun, engaging illustrations

Cons

  • Recipes are not as creative as in some other kids' cookbooks

Originally published in 2002, this cookbook offers recipes that kids can make but the whole family will love. Think: Gooey Cinnamon Buns, Baby Bam Burgers, Ka-Bam Kabobs and more. "This was my favorite cookbook as a kid," says Associate Editor Becca Miller. "I loved the illustrations and the recipes felt interesting but entry level. At one point, I made the apple crisp at least once a week!" Some reviewers felt that the recipes weren't creative enough for children, though we love that it offers a variety of basics that can become part of your family's repertoire.

What to look for in cookbooks for kids

double line break

✔️Age range: Some publishers will specify which age group is best suited for the difficulty level of the cookbook, so be sure to read the product description before buying. Recipes designed for a six-year-old, for example, would be much different from recipes for a 12-year-old. If your kid is at the upper level of the age range, consider jumping to the next highest age range so they have room to grow and learn with the book.

✔️Type of recipes: Does your child want to learn culinary basics or make a party-ready cupcake tower? Do they aspire to make dinner for the family or exclusively for friends at their next slumber party? Be sure the recipes included in the cookbook match the cooking goal your kid has in mind.

✔️Number of recipes: We found that the number of recipes in cookbooks for kids varied widely, from less than 20 to more than 120. If a lot of recipes feels intimidating for a beginner cook, look for shorter books. But if your budding chef will fly through recipes on a weekly basis, consider going big.

FAQ

double line break

What makes a recipe kid-friendly? It depends on your kid's interest and skill level, but in general, kid-friendly recipes are simple, easy to follow and don't require a ton of ingredients or prep work. If a recipe calls for working with heat, knives, blenders or other kitchen tools your child may be unfamiliar with, be sure to supervise them.

Cooking something more complicated? Your kid can still help: They can always measure liquids or dry goods (these magnetic measuring spoons that lay flat on your counter are extra kid-friendly), mix or whisk ingredients and even crack eggs.

Does my kid need any special tools to cook? Other than knives and sharp tools, they can use the same tools and equipment that adults use. If you're looking to hone your kid's knife skills, show them how it's done first, and consider letting them practice (with your supervision) on softer foods with a small butter knife or paring knife. Still nervous? Pick up a kid-safe Nylon knife.

Are there any benefits to kids learning how to cook? Cooking is a great way for your child to learn how to work with others, develop kitchen knowhow and practice early math and literacy skills.
