Is there such a thing as healthy frozen pizza? If you make the right choices, it’s possible for this movie-night staple to be part of a nutritious diet.

“Frozen pizza is the ultimate quick dinner hack, but it’s not always the healthiest solution," says Stefani Sassos, M.S., R.D., C.D.N., the nutrition director for the Good Housekeeping Institute. "There are more and more products available that offer healthier alternatives to traditional comfort foods, pizza included." While these healthier pies will never beat out a nutritious home-cooked meal, they’re a great option when you’re running low on time or ingredients. Or, hey, when you’re craving a fresh, hot slice of ‘za but still want to get in some whole grains and veggies.

Registered dietitians in the Good Housekeeping Institute Nutrition Lab tested over 35 frozen pizzas, analyzing nutrition facts, ingredient lists, taste, texture, cooking times and more.

Our top picks:

Best Overall Healthy Frozen Pizza

Amy's Pizza Margherita Thin Crust

Margherita Thin Crust

Pros

  • Non-GMO
  • Organic ingredients

Cons

  • Serving size is only 1/3 of the pie

A tried-and-true brand in the frozen and prepared food categories, Amy's doesn't disappoint with their frozen pizzas.

This pick offers a healthy, non-GMO frozen pizza option for the entire family (though the serving size is only a third of the pie, so scale up as needed). "Not only does this delicious thin-crust pizza cook up well, but it’s made with premium, top-quality organic ingredients," Sassos says. "Plus, one-third of the pie serving packs in 10 grams of protein."

This choice is a favorite with our testers and experts due to the delicious taste and nutritious ingredients. One tester exclaimed, "Absolutely fantastic! Even my kids loved it." Another tester reported the pizza is "unbeatable, best frozen pizza I’ve tried hands down. It tastes really fresh and the sauce is incredible."

Serving size1/3 pizza
Nutrition facts (per serving)270 calories, 12g fat, 4g sat fat, 540mg sodium, 31g total carb, 2g fiber, 4g sugar, 2g added sugar, 10g protein
2
Best Healthy High Protein Frozen Pizza

Miltons Craft Bakers Cauliflower Crust Roasted Vegetable Pizza

Cauliflower Crust Roasted Vegetable Pizza
Now 25% Off

Pros

  • High in protein
  • Cauliflower crust tastes like regular crust

Cons

  • Not very crispy

One of Sassos’ favorites, this cauliflower crust pizza has a simple tomato sauce and cheese topping with small pieces of roasted veggies. One tester remarked that they couldn’t even tell it was a cauliflower crust, though they wished it was crispier. It’s certified gluten-free and contains three types of cheese: mozzarella, pecorino and parmesan for both richness and savory flavor.

While it’s a little bit higher in sodium per serving than our other picks, it has a whopping 18 grams of protein per serving and the serving size is generous: half the pizza. If you’re looking to cut back on sodium, cut the serving size in half and enjoy this with a lower-sodium side.

Serving size1/2 pizza
Nutrition facts (per serving)340 calories, 13g fat, 8g sat fat, 700mg sodium, 32g carb, 3g fiber, 4g sugar, 1g added sugar, 18g protein

Best Vegan Frozen Pizza Without Cheese

American Flatbread Farmer's Tomato Pie

Farmer's Tomato Pie

Pros

  • Vegan
  • Short ingredient list

Cons

  • Crust was a little soggy from the tomatoes

For a vegan option that isn’t loaded with vegan cheese, turn to this all-tomato pie. It has one of the shortest ingredients lists we saw, with a crust made from just 100% organically grown wheat, “good mountain water,” organic wheat bran, kosher salt and fresh yeast. Testers compared the fresh tomato-loaded pie to bruschetta, though they found that the crust was a bit soggy from all of the tomato sauce. Next time, we’d cook it a little bit longer.

The nutrition info on this pie was also impressive, with just 2 grams of saturated fat in the entire pizza. Since it’s lower in protein, consider enjoying it with a protein-rich side (try beans, tofu or tempeh if you’re keeping things vegan).

Serving size1/2 pizza
Nutrition facts (per serving)240 calories, 8g fat, 1g sat fat, 450mg sodium, 36g carb, 3g fiber, 2g sugar, 0g added sugar, 6g protein
4
Best Healthy Frozen Pepperoni Pizza

Against the Grain Uncured Pepperoni Pizza

Uncured Pepperoni Pizza

Pros

  • Thick and chewy crust
  • Cheesy

Cons

  • Serving size is small

This winner, although gluten-free, had one of the thickest and chewiest crusts of all the pizzas we tried. It was also one of the few that offered an impressive cheese pull. All that heartiness means the serving size is pretty small (about a fifth of the pizza), but luckily, pepperoni pizza goes with everything. Pair it with a healthy salad or your favorite protein to complete the meal. Testers loved the subtle spice and savory kick from the thinly-sliced pepperoni and appreciated the somewhat doughy texture of the crust. It reminded us of childhood-favorite junk food, all grown up with better nutrition.

Serving size1/5 pizza
Nutrition facts (per serving)380 calories, 21g fat, 8g sat fat, 260mg sodium, 31g carb, 0g fiber, 3g sugar, 0g added sugar, 16g protein

Best Chickpea Healthy Frozen Pizza

Banza Margherita Pizza

Margherita Pizza
Credit: Banza

Pros

  • High protein and high fiber
  • Gluten-free

Cons

  • High in sodium

This gluten-free pick brings together chickpeas, San Marzano tomato sauce and mozzarella in a nutritious pizza with a whopping 7 grams of fiber. Chickpeas are the leading ingredient in this crust, but you’d never know it. Sassos says the chickpeas provide a good source of fiber, and the crust itself has a better texture than other alternatives on the market. Though we wish it was lower in sodium, it has an added bonus of 16 grams of protein from the chickpeas and mozzarella.

This yummy pie is a tester and expert favorite because of its thick, crispy crust. Testers loved that it was filling and tasty with one calling out that it was "more substantial than a cauliflower crust."

Serving size1/2 pizza
Nutrition facts (per serving)390 calories, 17g fat, 8g sat fat, 690mg sodium, 48g carb, 7g fiber, 4g sugar, 0g added sugar, 16g protein

Best Restaurant-Quality Healthy Frozen Pizza

Newman's Own Authentic Italian Stone-Fired Crust Spinach & Formaggi Pizza

Authentic Italian Stone-Fired Crust Spinach & Formaggi Pizza

Pros

  • Crisp, chewy crust
  • High in protein

Cons

  • Some found the toppings too lemony

With a crisp, chewy and flour-dusted crust, this pie tastes like it could’ve come straight out of a pizzeria. Good Housekeeping Recipe Editor Susan Choung loved the lemony greens in the topping, which provided a nice contrast to the cheesy, buttery sauce. While some testers found the spinach too lemony, everyone agreed that the dough (made of just flour, water, semolina, sea salt and yeast) was top quality. This is also one of the highest-protein options on our list, with 17 grams of protein per serving.

Prefer a thin and crispy crust? Testers also loved the White Pie from Newman’s Own.

Serving size1/3 pizza
Nutrition facts (per serving)310 calories, 12g fat, 7g sat fat, 610mg sodium, 34g total carb, 2g fiber, 1g total sugar, 0g added sugar, 17g protein

Best Vegan Cheese Healthy Frozen Pizza

Sweet Earth Veggie Lover's Frozen Pizza

Veggie Lover's Frozen Pizza

Pros

  • Vegan
  • Made with organic ingredients

Cons

  • Serving is only 1/3 of the pizza

Often vegan pizzas can contain artificial ingredients in an effort to mimc the taste of meat and dairy, but this offering from Sweet Earth manages to include an organic ingredient list loaded with tons of veggies. The pick isn’t very high in sodium either, and offers a filling 5 grams of fiber per serving, but a serving is only one-third of the pie.

Our experts point out that a serving is a good source of fiber and testers appreciate the mix of different veggies including broccoli, mushrooms and Brussels sprouts. Many said that it was filling, flavorful and tasted gourmet.

Best Paleo Frozen Pizza Crust

Cappello's Naked Pizza Crust

Naked Pizza Crust

Pros

  • Crisp texture and great taste
  • Gluten-free and grain-free

Cons

  • Somewhat high in saturated fat

This brand, known for simple, real-food ingredients, develops delicious pizza offerings that are grain-free and certified gluten-free. This top-performing crust in our tests serves up best-in-class ingredients — there are just 12 ingredients in the almond flour-based crust and it's naturally sweetened with honey — and checks a lot of boxes for those with dietary restrictions. It contains 7 grams of saturated fat in just a third of the crust, which is on the higher end of the pizzas on this list, though the fat comes from natural ingredients like coconut oil and coconut milk.

Testers found the crust to be crisp and firm and said that it held up well to a variety of toppings. "An extremely versatile and pleasant surprise," one tester said. Many noted its great texture and flavor.

Serving size1/3 crust

Best Healthy Frozen Pizza Bites

Snow Days Cheese Pizza Bites

Cheese Pizza Bites

Pros

  • Certified gluten-free and USDA organic
  • Loaded with hidden vegetables

Cons

  • Filling can spill out a bit

These better-for-you pizza bites are organic and make a nutritious and convenient snack or appetizer. Their standout ingredient list, which is certified gluten-free and USDA organic, includes a grain-free cassava flour-based crust and a ton of nutrient-rich hidden veggies. Sassos says that they come out best in the air fryer, though the filling spills out a little.

Testers praised their incredible flavor, texture and ingredient list. Our registered dietitians love that a generous five-piece serving packs in 5 grams of filling fiber and 7 grams of protein for a seriously satisfying snack.

Serving size5 pieces
Nutrition facts (per serving)240 calories, 13g fat, 6g sat fat, 450mg sodium, 28g carb, 5g fiber, 2g sugar, 0g added sugar, 7g protein

Best Healthy Frozen Pizza Flavor

Whole Foods Market Zucchini Rapini Pizza

Zucchini Rapini Pizza

Pros

  • Great flavor
  • High in protein

Cons

  • May be too spicy for some

Bursting with garlic and fresh herb flavors, this pick scored top marks in the taste department. “The slightly sweet and smoky zucchini balanced well with bitter rapini and creamy cheese to create the perfect satisfying bite,” said Good Housekeeping Associate Food Editor Becca Miller. The pie doesn't skimp on veggies either. Like the name suggests, it’s piled high with grilled zucchini and seasoned rapini, another name for broccoli rabe.

For a vegetarian pizza, it’s relatively high in protein, clocking in at 12 grams per serving. Although the slightly bitter, slightly spicy rapini combined with red pepper flakes might make this pie too spicy for anyone sensitive to heat.

Caulipower Margherita Stone-Fired Cauliflower Pizza

Pros

  • High protein
  • Gluten-free

Cons

  • Crust not as crispy as others

The gluten-free crust boasts 12 grams of protein per serving. It's also one of the lower sodium options, at 540 mg for half a pie. "Cauliflower as the first ingredient makes this pick a great way to sneak in veggies with a familiar food that the whole family can enjoy," Sassos says.

This is also a favorite cauliflower pizza with our testers and experts. They loved the thin crust but wished it was crispier, and noted that half the pie was a generous serving size.

Serving size1/2 pizza

Best Low-Carb Frozen Pizza Crust

Outer Aisle Gluten Free Cauliflower Pizza Crust, Italian

Gluten Free Cauliflower Pizza Crust, Italian

Pros

  • Individual-size pizzas
  • Low-carb

Cons

  • Not as filling as others on the list

Made with only four ingredients — cauliflower, cage-free eggs, parmesan cheese and nutritional yeast — you can't get simpler than this choice for individual-size pizzas. The low-carb and diabetic-friendly offering contains just 4 grams of carbs per serving and is low in sodium and sugar. "You can even enjoy two crusts for only 240 calories, and it takes well to practically any topping," Sassos says. As a lower-calorie option, however, testers reported it was less filling than other crusts on this list.

Our experts found this pick versatile and surprisingly delicious. They recommend that it's best to bake the crust first, then add the toppings so it doesn’t get soggy. One tester said, "I can't believe this is made from cauliflower; this is a game changer."

Frozen Pepperoni Pizza Bites

Pros

  • Certified gluten-free
  • No artificial ingredients

Cons

  • Only 3 bites per serving

Brazi Bites makes a variety of tasty Brazilian cheese breads and pizza bites that are naturally gluten-free, made with tapioca flour. The crust uses their cheese bread dough and then is filled with pepperoni, mozzarella and tomato.

Our experts like that in addition to being free from preservatives and artificial ingredients, these bites are nicely seasoned and flavorful. We just wish there were more than three bites per serving. Testers loved that the bites were easy to prepare, delicious and filling. "The crust was the best part. It did not burn or dry out with the directions given," one tester said.

Best Crispy Healthy Frozen Pizza

California Pizza Kitchen Crispy Thin Crust Frozen Pizza Margherita

Crispy Thin Crust Frozen Pizza Margherita

Pros

  • Crispy crust
  • Rich, cheesy taste

Cons

  • Higher in saturated fat

You’d never guess a frozen pizza from this favorite chain restaurant could be healthy — but it can. It’s lower in sodium and carbohydrates, though it’s on the higher end for saturated fat, with the cheesy, comforting taste we expect from California Pizza Kitchen. “It’s light but satisfying, with a crispy, thin crust,” said Sassos. “It has just enough cheese to complement the toppings and it tastes really fresh.”

Margherita pizza is the perfect blank canvas for additional toppings. Try crowning it with fresh arugula and a drizzle of balsamic glaze, or pair it with a side of crispy roast veggies.

Best Healthy Frozen Pizza Pocket

Mikey's Uncured Pepperoni Pizza Pocket

Uncured Pepperoni Pizza Pocket
Credit: Mikey's

Pros

  • Dairy-free but not vegan
  • Gluten-free

Cons

  • Higher in carbs

A delicious and healthier take on a traditional pizza pocket, this pick from Mikey's is grain-free with a crust made from sunflower and cassava flours. Just because it's gluten-free doesn't mean it's low carb, however. At 37 grams per serving, it's actually one of the higher-carb picks on this list.

You'll find real uncured pepperoni inside but the cheese is a plant-based mozzarella medley, making this choice dairy-free. We appreciate that this appeals to those on a dairy-free diet who don't necessarily want something entirely vegan. Testers loved the delicious taste and how convenient and portable the pocket was. Those with allergies and gluten intolerances praised the delectable treat.

What to consider when shopping for healthy frozen pizzas

line break

✔️ Net carbs: This refers to the number of carbs that are actually absorbed by your body. Find it on nutrition labels by subtracting the total fiber from the total carbohydrates. We found about 30 net carbs was a reasonable number for pizza, with many healthier options easily hitting that number.

✔️ Sugar: Sassos explains that crust and tomato sauce can be a sneaky source of sugar in pizza. Look out for less than 4 grams, or one teaspoon, per serving.

✔️ Sodium: Pizza, in general, is not a low-sodium food, but the healthiest options we could find hovered around 600 mg of sodium per serving. This is reasonable compared to some other ‘za’s we found, which were closer to 800-900 mg of sodium per serving.

✔️ Fiber and protein: “Higher protein and fiber options will keep you fuller longer,” says Sassos. “I always say that it’s a good idea to pair the pizza with a salad or some veggies to add volume and nutrients.”

✔️ Saturated fat: Under 4 grams per serving is best, but this may be hard to find on frozen pizza. We found that 8 grams per serving or less was a reasonable number to hit. The lower, the better.

✔️ Ingredients: It’s not all just about the numbers. Pay attention to labels and look for whole food ingredients, like crusts made with whole grains, legumes and vegetables like cauliflower and broccoli.
