Whether you're looking for fully pre-made meals or traditional meal delivery kits to keep dinnertime fresh, there's a service out there for everyone. The options are growing, with many services now catering towards different dietary preferences and lifestyles.

If you're passionate about organic living, our food and nutrition experts in the Good Housekeeping Institute spent months evaluating organic meal delivery services to find the best ones worth trying.

Our top picks:

Organic food meets a set of strict standards set by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Organic Program. Organic farmers focus on practices that "foster resource cycling, promote ecological balance, maintain and improve soil and water quality, minimize the use of synthetic materials and conserve biodiversity," according to the USDA. They don't use specific man-made pesticides and are also prohibited from utilizing genetic engineering (aka GMOs).

To find the best meal delivery services, including organic compliant options, the GH Institute's food and nutrition experts conducted an extensive review of over 40 meal delivery services with more than 280 home chefs just like you. For three months, our testers evaluated each service, including traditional meal kits, semi-prepared options and fully prepared ready-to-eat meals.

Read on for our top-tested organic meal delivery service picks, which also cater to a variety of other different dietary preferences. At the end of this guide, we offer more information on how we test meal delivery kits, as well as tips on selecting the right service for you.

How we test the best meal delivery services

    "

Food and nutrition experts in the the Good Housekeeping Institute test all different types of food products and services throughout the year. From healthy snacks and supplements to food subscription boxes and meal delivery services, our team is committed to bringing you the best of the best when it comes to quality, performance, flavor, nutrition and more.

In our most recent study of meal delivery services, we recruited over 280 at-home testers across the nation, while our in-house experts also tested the services in our Labs. We evaluated over 40 different meal delivery services, ranging from traditional kits that come with pre-measured ingredients and a follow-along recipe card to fully prepared options. We tested the services over the course of three months.

We made our selections based on tester feedback, the percentage of organic and responsibly sourced ingredients used and sustainable farming practices. We also looked at the breadth of menu choices, overall satisfaction, cost, recycling efforts and availability. We tried to meet every age range, dietary preference and effort level too. While taste is subjective, we chose companies that scored high points overall with testers.

What to look for when selecting the best organic meal delivery service

    double line break

When finding the best meal delivery service to fit into your lifestyle and budget, there are a few key things to consider:

✔️ Service type: Some services offer a traditional meal kit where they send the ingredients and you follow a recipe and cook all of the food yourself. Others are designed for even more convenience, with fully prepared options that can be simply heated up or even eaten straight from the container. There are also options that fall in between: Food is partially prepped and requires minimal extra work to get a balanced meal on the table quickly.

✔️ Servings: Are you cooking for a large family, or do you prefer a meal for two people? You'll want to take a look at the plans the different services offer and keep in mind that while some services may start at a low price that is for a large order.

✔️ Fresh or frozen: Although many of our picks gravitate towards fresh services, our pros say it's smart to reconsider frozen options too. Frozen meals can avoid waste whereas fresh options can spoil if not eaten immediately.

✔️ Dietary preferences: All of these services cater to organic ingredients, but if you have additional dietary needs on top of this you'll want to ensure that the service caters to that. Some options have robust vegetarian menus, whereas other services may offer only a handful of vegetarian meals to choose from each week. Certain services will let you customize further and swap out proteins, which can be beneficial.

✔️ Additional discounts: With most services, note that costs per serving tend to go down as you sign up for more meals or servings. Most services will give you a discount on the first box and additional discounts if you are a first responder or in the military. And if you know a friend or family member who is using the service, you may both get a discount for the referral.
