When hunger strikes and you need fuel fast, a protein bar can be a quick and convenient solution. With options ranging from whey protein to plant-based varieties and flavors that rival desserts (think sprinkle donut and birthday cake!), the shelf is packed with choices. But not all bars live up to their health claims.

Many protein bars are loaded with high amounts of added sugars, saturated fats and artificial ingredients. "Watch out for excess added sugars, especially those from cane sugar, corn syrup, dextrose, glucose or fructose," says NYC-based dietitian Cassandra Lepore, M.S., R.D. "Too much added sugar defeats the purpose of a protein bar – at that point, it's more like a candy bar in disguise." That's why it's important to read the label and know what to look for.

To help you find bars that deliver on both nutrition and taste, the Good Housekeeping Institute Nutrition Lab rigorously evaluated dozens of protein bars. We also gathered feedback from consumer taste testers across the country to spotlight the best of the bunch. Sports dietitian Kelly Jones, M.S., R.D., C.S.S.D., recommends aiming for at least 10 grams of protein per serving, or closer to 20 grams for those with performance or muscle-building goals in mind.

              How we test protein bars

gh nutrition director stefani sassos evaluates protein bars in the good housekeeping institute
Alec Scherma / Good Housekeeping Institute

Our team of food and nutrition experts, including registered dietitians in the Good Housekeeping Institute Nutrition Lab, evaluates thousands of snack products year-round. When it comes to protein bars, we prioritize both nutrition and ingredient quality to help you make the most informed choice.

To meet our nutrition criteria, each bar must contain no more than 300 calories and a maximum of 10 grams of added sugar per serving. We also required a minimum of 10 grams of protein per bar to qualify as a true protein bar. Most of the bars on our list contain no more than 8 grams of added sugar, and those closer to 10 grams have added sugars derived from more nutrient-dense sources, such as honey.

Fiber content also played a key role in our assessment. Since fiber supports satiety and helps round out a bar's nutrition profile, we prioritized picks that delivered at least 3 grams per serving. We also limited sodium to under 300 milligrams per bar to keep our selections heart-healthy.

But nutrition is only a part of the equation — if it doesn't taste good, you just aren't going to eat it. That's why we enlisted dozens of real-life testers across the country to sample the bars and provide feedback on flavor, texture and overall quality. Their insights helped us identify protein bars that don't just fuel your day, but are something you will actually look forward to eating.

What to look for when shopping for the best protein bar

an assortment of bars being evaluated in the good housekeeping institute
              Jill Sollazzo

Protein bars are relatively inexpensive, so there isn't much risk in buying one to see if you do, in fact, enjoy the flavor and texture. But before stocking up, consider the following factors to ensure you're picking a bar that suits your taste preferences and nutrition goals:

✔️ Flavor: Our experts recommend starting with a sample or variety pack when available. Even if you gravitate toward chocolate, you might find yourself enjoying a lemon meringue or birthday cake flavor. Switching things up can also keep snacking from feeling monotonous.

✔️ Texture: Do you like a bar that's crunchy, chewy or smooth and creamy? Texture can make or break your snacking experience, especially if you're looking for something that won't melt in your bag or crumble on the go.

✔️ Protein: All of our top picks deliver at least 10 grams of protein per serving. But check the ingredient list to ensure the protein type aligns with your needs. Whey protein has long dominated the market, but high-quality plant-based options are increasingly available and just as effective.

✔️ Carbs and fiber: If you're keeping track of your carbs, whether for blood sugar control or a specific eating plan, pay attention to the total carbohydrate and fiber content. "Aim for bars with a carb-to-protein ratio of around 2:1, or choose options where the carbs don’t exceed twice the amount of protein," Lepore explains. Fiber adds staying power, but more isn't always better. If you're choosing a bar with 10+ grams of fiber, increase your intake gradually and drink plenty of water to help the fiber digest properly.

✔️ Dietary restrictions and allergens: For those with food sensitivities and allergies, ingredient lists and certifications matter. Look for bars that are made in allergen-safe facilities. For gluten-free needs, choose those with a Certified Gluten-Free label to ensure safety.

Is it OK to eat protein bars every day?

              linebreak

While protein bars can be a helpful tool, relying on them too heavily in place of whole foods may mean missing out on key nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, fiber, and omega-3 fats. According to Jones: "So long as an eating pattern is mainly made up of nutrient-dense whole foods at meals and other snacks, protein bars can have a place, even regularly."

Lepore agrees, emphasizing that protein bars can be a convenient way to support your nutrition and protein goals, especially when you're on the go. "That said, they're not essential if you're already meeting your protein needs through whole, nutrient-dense foods in your regular diet," she explains.

While some people may use protein bars as meal replacements, Lepore cautions against making this a habit. "Unlike a real meal, most bars lack the variety of nutrients your body needs, like fiber, complex carbs, healthy fats and a mix of whole-food proteins and produce," she says.

Are whey-based protein bars better than plant-based?

              linebreak

Both whey-based and plant-based bars can be solid sources of protein, but there are some key nutritional differences. "Whey-based bars provide all nine essential amino acids, including leucine, which plays a crucial role in muscle protein synthesis," Lepore explains. "If you're not vegan or plant-based, whey is my top pick because it guarantees a complete protein source that's highly bioavailable, meaning your body absorbs and uses it efficiently."

Plant-based protein bars, on the other hand, typically rely on sources like pea, rice, hemp, soy or pumpkin seed protein. While these may be incomplete on their own, many brands combine multiple plant proteins to create a complete amino acid profile. "For vegans and plant-based eaters, I recommend choosing bars that use a blend of complete plant proteins or complementing your protein bar with other plant-based protein foods to ensure you get a full range of essential amino acids."

How do protein bars compare to other forms of protein?

              linebreak

"When it comes to protein supplements like bars and shakes, the key factors are the ingredients and the total amounts of carbohydrates, protein and added sugars," Lepore says. "While I encourage getting protein from real, whole foods, that's not always practical given how convenient and portable protein supplements can be for busy, on-the-go lifestyles."

That said, it's perfectly fine to lean on convenient options when needed to help you stay fueled throughout the day. Just be sure to strike a balance by incorporating a variety of whole foods into your overall eating pattern.
