And because we’d never make you wander the baking aisle alone (with so many brownie mixes to choose from!), we conducted a taste test to find the very best brownie mix so you can spot it on the shelves, cut down on shopping time and get to brownie baking ASAP.
There are a lot of great brownie mix brands to choose from, so we narrowed down our taste test contenders to widely available, recognizable brands that anyone can pick up at their local grocery store. Next, we chose the top-selling boxes from each of those popular brands. That left us with 18 mixes (yes, really!) for our best brownie mix taste test. Finally, a group of us chocolate-loving editors threw on our aprons and got to work baking, tasting and recording notes about every last bite. We know, it’s a tough job.

For a clean, robust chocolate flavor, almost-too-fudgy center and perfectly chewy edges that make prime corner pieces, this brownie mix comes out on top.
Pillsbury Dark Chocolate Brownie Mix
This one fared better than some of the more expensive brands, scoring big for striking the ultimate textural balance between cakey and fudgy.
Stonewall Kitchen Gluten Free Chocolate Brownie Mix
A lot of gluten-free brownie mixes impressed us more than their flour-filled counterparts, but this one stood out for its perfect chocolatey flavor, enhanced by coffee sprinkles scattered throughout the batter.
With three kinds of chocolate chips — semisweet, bittersweet and milk chocolate — this boxed mix is the clear winner for true chocolate lovers. Want even more flavor? Sub the water for freshly brewed coffee.

Under-baked brownie fans, this one’s for you. Even when fully cooked, this gooey great maintains a thick fudginess that’ll stick to the roof of your mouth — and there’s definitely nothing wrong with that.
Even though they’re all relatively straightforward, this boxed mix was simpler than others, with a looser batter that came together easily and baked up like a dream.
This option boasts a deep chocolate flavor, chewy center and plenty of bittersweet chocolate chips — some of which melt into the batter as it bakes.
We knew we’d like this one when it first came out of the oven — it smelled so chocolatey that it was hard to resist. Be patient, because the texture settles into chewy perfection as it cools.
