Our top picks contain no more than 200 calories, 2 grams of saturated fat, and 300 milligrams of sodium per serving. Many options are made with nutrient-rich ingredients like legumes and vegetables, while others offer a lighter take on the classic sea salt potato chip. How we test snacks

good housekeeping chip testing
Jill Sollazzo

At the Good Housekeeping Institute, we’re serious about finding snacks that taste great and are better for you, and chips are no exception. Our team of registered dietitians in the Nutrition Lab reviewed over 30 chip options, focusing on picks made with real, whole ingredients and simple, easy-to-recognize labels. We prioritized choices with no more than 200 calories, 2 grams of saturated fat, and 300 milligrams of sodium per serving. Every chip had to meet our rigorous nutrition standards while still being convenient and satisfying enough to truly curb a snack craving.

But nutrition alone isn’t enough. That’s why we brought in our in-house culinary experts to evaluate the chips for taste, texture, and overall enjoyment. We sent samples to consumer testers across the country to get real feedback from everyday snackers. Their input helped us identify the most delicious, well-balanced chips that don’t just meet health goals, but actually deliver on taste. Whether you’re craving something savory, crunchy, or boldly seasoned, our top picks prove that smart snacking doesn’t have to mean sacrificing flavor.

What to look for when shopping for healthier chips

Jill Sollazzo

Whether you're searching for a lower-sodium version of your go-to chip or exploring new, veggie-based alternatives, there are a few key factors to keep in mind to help you make smarter snack choices without sacrificing satisfaction.

✔️ Nutrition Profile: A healthier chip should be lower in sodium, contain minimal saturated fat and no artificial additives. Ones that provide fiber and protein are ideal as well to keep you satiated. Don’t overlook the serving size, which can range widely from brand to brand, and consider opting for portion-controlled packs.

✔️ Ingredients: Scan the ingredient list for real, whole foods listed first, such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, kale, or legumes. Potatoes, oil and salt are all the list should contain. Ideally, opt for chips made with avocado oil or olive oil if possible. Most chips are naturally gluten-free, but be sure to check the label.

✔️ Texture: A chip should deliver that satisfying crunch you expect, whether it's a kettle-cooked variety, puffed legume crisp, or thinly sliced vegetable chip.

✔️ Flavor: Healthier chips don't have to be bland. Many brands now offer creative and bold flavor options, from spicy chili lime to tangy vinegar or savory truffle. While flavor is subjective, trying variety packs is a great way to explore what you like without committing to a full-size bag.
