Washing Machine and Dryer

Mike Garten/Good Housekeeping

Not surprisingly, the cleaning experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute give this costume two thumbs up. Though this DIY costume is a bit more involved than purchasing a few closet staples on Amazon, if you're into crafting, you should have no problems.

Here's a step-by-step guide:

1) Use upcycled items you might already have at home! Start with a large square cardboard box, roughly 20” x 20”.

2) Fold a top flap in half to create the control panel, and secure with hot glue. Cut neck and arm holes with a box cutter or x-acto blade.

3) Paint the box white and let dry. Add bottle caps and lids for buttons and knobs with hot glue. You can also print images of control panel elements or draw by hand.

4) For the washer, use a clear takeout container lid and some fabric scraps glued onto the front of the box. For the dryer, cut a square of painted cardboard and attach it to make a door.

5) Accessorize your look with detergent bottles, dryer sheets, and extra laundry!

Retro Music

family halloween costumes for a record, a mix tape and a disco ball all on a black background
mike garten

With this trio of costumes, everyone in the fam can pick their favorite icon of an era of music gone by.

For the Record:

  1. Cut out 2 large cardboard circles from a box. Cover both sides of circles with black spray paint and let dry completely.
  2. While circles are drying, print out 2 copies of our record label template.
  3. Cut out labels and glue 1 to the center of each black cardboard circle.
  4. To create shoulder and chest straps, measure length needed; for each strap, place 2 strips of black duct tape, sticky sides together.
  5. Tape straps to cardboard on front and back so costume will slip easily over wearer’s head. Use a paint pen to draw on record grooves.

For the Mix Tape:

  1. Cut 2 large rectangles from the cardboard box.
  2. Spray paint both sides of the circles with teal spray paint.
  3. While this dries, print out 2 copies of our cassette label template.
  4. Cut out the label and glue it to the center of the cardboard rectangles.
  5. Using a black permanent maker, follow the template provided to add the cassette shapes and outlines.
  6. Use the directions above (in the record instructions) to create shoulder and chest straps.
  7. Tape to the cardboard front and back so you can easily slip it over your head.

For the Disco Ball:

  1. Cut 2 large circles from the cardboard box.
  2. Spray paint both sides of the circles with silver spray paint and let dry completely.
  3. While this dries, cut out 1" x 2" foil rectangles.
  4. Tear 1/2" wide strips of duct tape and place foil rectangles on sticky side so the majority of the foil hangs off (so it looks like a banner of flags).
  5. Starting at the bottom, stick the tape/foil banner across the silver cardboard circle so the layer above overlaps the layer below. This will create a tiled effect.
  6. Trim or fold back the tape around the edge of the circle to maintain the round "disco ball" shape.
  7. Complete 2 circles for the front and back.
  8. Use the directions above (in the record instructions) to create shoulder and chest straps.
  9. Tape to the cardboard front and back so you can easily slip it over your head.

Scrub Daddies

Mike Garten/Good Housekeeping

Just when we thought "America's favorite sponge" couldn't be any cuter, this Halloween costume idea enters the scene. It may look intimidating for crafting beginners, but once you have the supplies secured— mainly, a foam egg crate mattress topper, thick ribbon, craft paint, and cardboard — the step-by-step is easy to follow.

Directions:

1. Cut two large circles out of cardboard (wider than your body).

2. Trace the cardboard circle onto the back of the mattress topper material and add about 2” all around to have the foam extend over the cardboard.

3. Cut out the circle with your fabric scissors.

4. Repeat steps 2-3 with the other circle.

5. Draw two eyes and a mouth onto the back of one of the foam circles. Cut out with fabric scissors.

6. Paint the cardboard circles a darker shade than the mattress topper and let dry.

7. Working in sections spread a layer of hot glue and press the back side of the foam onto the cardboard and ensure the foam adheres.

8. Repeat step 7 until you’ve attached the foam securely to the cardboard.

9. Attach ribbon to the top of the circle with tape on the inside to create straps to hang your scrub daddy onto your shoulders like a sandwich sign.

Charcuterie Board

Mike Garten/Good Housekeeping

The cutest hors-d'œuvre we've ever seen! To execute this creative ensemble, make sure to have plenty of hot glue and fabric glue, a round styrofoam cake, as well as scissors, felt, t-pins, and floral wire. The salami hat is pretty straightforward: Cut red felt in various shapes, attach it to a red beret with fabric glue and done. The gouda cheese hat is also easy once you paint and cut the styrofoam cake to look like a wedge of gouda. Then you'll cut a piece of red felt to fit around the perimeter of the wedge and attach it with fabric glue. Lastly, attach a piece of elastic to the underside of the foam with t-pins dipped in glue.

Here's the full tutorial for the grape hat:

1) Cut several 12” lengths of floral wire.

2) Thread an ornament onto the center of each wire and twist the ends together.

3) Gather all of the wired ornaments together and twist the wires together to create a tapered bunch of grapes.

4) Trim any excess wire pieces. Wrap any exposed wire with floral tape.

5) Cut a grape leaf shape from green paper and attach it to the bunch with hot glue.

5) Wire two small hair combs to the bottom of the bunch to secure on your head. You might need some extra bobby pins to secure as well.
