Unless you live in a studio apartment, you’re probably familiar with dead zones in your home, or rooms where the WiFi is hit or miss. For most of us, the situation has gone from bad to worse while we're spending even more time at home, with everyone and their mother (father, sister, brother, too) living out their lives online. Coupled with even more smart home and connected devices in households, the need for stronger WiFi is more important than ever before.

Now for the good news: it’s easy and not too cost prohibitive to send a strong wireless signal to every corner of your home by putting in a WiFi mesh system. The systems typically consist of an additional router-like device that connects to your home’s existing modem, along with plug-in satellite modules, or nodes, that you place in parts of the house with weak internet access.

The experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute have been testing mesh Wi-Fi systems since they first went mainstream around 2015; our evaluations have been particularly hands-on in the last year, with testers doing so much work from home. To figure out the very best Wi-Fi mesh systems available now, we've evaluated more than 20 models on such factors as ease of set up, download speeds, feature set, and overall design.

While our tests found many worthy Wi-Fi mesh systems, choosing the best for your home will depend on personal factors, including house size, need for parental controls, and how much smart home integration you’re looking to maintain, for example with devices like smart locks and video doorbells. These winning Wi-Fi mesh systems should give you plenty of options:

Pros

  • Intuitive setup and control
  • Speedy download
  • Built-in Google Assistant

Cons

  • No USB ports
  • Lacks anti-malware security

Google users will gravitate naturally towards the Google Nest Wi-Fi, but really any homeowner should be pleased with the performance of this mesh system. Setup is a cinch, our testers found, and once it was up and running, download speeds increased significantly, even in far-flung parts of the home. We also love the built-in Google Assistant, enabling voice control over other connected devices in the home through every extension. Not for nothing, the Google Nest Wi-Fi also has a sleek design, so you won’t mind seeing the router and nodes on countertops and side tables.

Best Value Wi-Fi Mesh System

TP-Link Deco Smart Home Mesh Wi-Fi System

Pros

  • Great value
  • Built-in hub
  • Alexa compatible

Cons

  • Not designed for largest home

While no mesh systems can be called cheap, TP-Link is known for its value options, including the GH-approved Deco M9+. Setting up the system is super easy and its feature set is richer than you’d expect for the price, including anti-malware protections and a built-in hub for control of other connected devices in the home. Download speeds and coverage aren’t quite what you’ll experience with pricier, more robust systems, but if your house size and internet needs are moderate, the Deco M9+ should deliver.

eero eero Pro 6

eero Pro 6

Pros

  • Expansive coverage
  • Easy installation
  • Voice control

Cons

  • Parental controls and malware cost extra

With coverage area up to 6,000 square feet (the average U.S. home comes in at around 2,500 sq. ft.), the Eero Pro 6 is the way to go if you live in a big house that’s plagued by dead spots and buffering. Installation and setup are virtually fool-proof and of course the system works with Alexa (Amazon owns eero!), for seamless voice control. The system also boasts built-in Zigbee, so you don’t need a separate smart home hub to manage other connected devices. One small point testers quibbled over: though the Eero Pro 6 was clearly designed with families in mind, parental controls only come with the $3 monthly subscription plan. It would be nice to see them baked into the product, free of charge.

Pros

  • Excellent whole-home coverage
  • Robust security features
  • Intuitive control

Cons

  • Pricey

The ZenWiFi AX is a whole-home system that provides fast download times across up to 5,500 square feet. What really sets this device apart from the competition, however, is the suite of anti-malware software and parental controls that are included in the free lifetime subscription to Asus’s AI Protection Pro program. We say free, though the upfront cost of the system is on the higher end. But if you’re concerned about hackers or keeping tabs on your kids’ internet activity, the ZenWiFi AX is worth the splurge.

Best Wi-Fi Mesh System and Smart Home Hub

Samsung SmartThings Wi-Fi Mesh Router

SmartThings Wi-Fi Mesh Router

Pros

  • Easy installation and setup
  • Doubles as smart home hub

Cons

  • No built-in voice control

Smart home technology is becoming more streamlined, which is a very good thing for consumers, since it means fewer devices to purchase and manage. SmartThings WiFi is a prime example. Like other mesh systems, the system blankets more of your home in fast, reliable internet service. It then goes one step farther by acting as a hub for other connected devices in the home, including lights, thermostats, video doorbells, and more. That makes it easy to control your entire smart home through a single SmartThings app. Our testers also like the intuitive parental controls, which make it simple to set boundaries on internet use.

Best Wi-Fi Mesh System for Smaller Homes

Linksys Velop Tri Band Intelligent Mesh WiFi System

Velop Tri Band Intelligent Mesh WiFi System

Pros

  • Low cost
  • Compact design
  • Effective through thick walls

Cons

  • No built-in hub

Even if you live in a small house or apartment, WiFi can be spotty because of thick or concrete walls or interference from other electronics. The scaled-down Linksys Velop was designed with those spaces in mind. The compact device is unobtrusive and easy to set up. It’s also fully modular, so if you end up moving to a larger place, you can simply buy additional nodes to expand the range of coverage.

Orbi Mesh WiFi 6 System

Pros

  • Fastest download times
  • Easy installation

Cons

  • Pricey
  • Subscription required for security controls

If you’ve upgraded to a WiFi 6 router, you’re already aware of the benefits: lighting-fast speed and the ability to support many connected devices (50 to 100 isn’t unheard of in today’s brightest smart homes). With the latest router, you’ll want a mesh system to boost WiFi coverage, and the Orbi WiFi 6 System is the top pick from our testers. Like any cutting-edge device, it’s expensive, but the download times are second-to-none, so if there’s a lot of streaming, gaming, and zooming happening at home, you shouldn’t suffer any buyer’s remorse with this pick.

What to look for when choosing a Wi-Fi mesh system

There’s more than one way to boost your home’s WiFi. Here’s how to make sure you end up with the perfect solution for your set up.

First off, do you need a mesh Wi-Fi system? Mesh Wi-Fi systems aren’t the only way to improve your internet coverage. There are also range extenders, which boost your home’s existing WiFi signal; they’re much cheaper than mesh systems, but the signal can only be broadcast once, so the range is limited. At the other end of the spectrum, you can install additional internet access points throughout your home for stellar WiFi coverage, but the process involves running cables, so it gets expensive. Mesh Wi-Fi systems are an excellent middle ground, combining value and performance.

Check your house size. If your home is less than 3,000 square feet, a two-unit mesh system will probably do. Larger homes will often benefit from a three-unit system. Keep in mind that you can usually add more satellites into the system, so it’s better to go too small at first than too big. Pricing tends to go up with coverage area, so don’t buy a bigger system than you need.

Take the long view. Chances are the number of connected devices is going to increase, so you’ll probably want to upgrade at some point to a router that supports WiFi 6, the latest generation. In that case, consider a mesh system that’s compatible with WiFi 6 as well. On the other hand, if your internet needs are pretty basic (streaming shows, internet searches, etc) any old router and mesh system should be fine for years to come.
