Whether for a small gathering or a large formal party, charcuterie boards are always a hit. A well-crafted board adds to the festivities, letting guests graze at their leisure. The options are endless — from the delicious selections to the board style itself. When choosing a charcuterie board, consider not only its design but also how well it meets your needs.
Our experts in the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab tested 11 charcuterie boards, assessing performance, ease of use and overall design. We also recruited consumer testers and our experts from the Good Housekeeping Test Kitchen to give feedback on our top picks. Additionally, we spoke with Evan Inada, the charcuterie director at Columbus Craft Meats for his expert insights.
Pros
Easy to hand wash
Handle makes it easy to carry
Dark color makes charcuterie stand out
Cons
Black finish more prone to showing scratches
The Pottery Barn Chateau Wood Handcrafted Round Cheese Board earned the top spot in our test due to its impressive performance and gorgeous design.
We tested the 15-inch diameter board in black and several testers commented it was their favorite board. The dark black color makes the charcuterie visually pop off the board, creating an eye-catching centerpiece for the table. Another advantage of the black color is that it helps hide stains. After leaving salami, strawberries and cheese on the board overnight, we found no signs of staining.
The handle makes it easy to carry and wash. Even though it’s hand wash only the finish helped leftover bits of food slide off easily while washing and the circular shape fit over our sink well so water didn’t run off the board onto the counter. There weren’t any signs of scratching from our testers cutting cheese, however, we noticed that a fairly hard scratch from a knife resulted in a minor knick in the black finish. This was only slightly noticeable, but it’s something to keep in mind when using it. If black isn’t your preference, it’s also available in brown or white-washed finishes.

One of the few boards that are dishwasher-safe

Boards are on the smaller side
It’s hard to beat the Epicurean boards that give you the best bang for your buck since you can use them as charcuterie boards, prep boards, cutting boards and just about any other time you need a board.
Not to mention you'll get three boards for just under $60. The set includes three boards made from durable paper composite. In our tests, no stains remained after leaving the charcuterie on them overnight and these cleaned up beautifully. Plus, they’re one of the few boards that are dishwasher safe.
The boards come in three shapes and sizes, reminiscent of slate boards, making them incredibly versatile and allowing you to use the just one board or scatter multiple around a table. The compact sizes allow for easy storage and the light weight makes them easy to move around or quickly hand wash.

Pros
Raised edges prevent food from falling off
Lightweight
Exquisite grain color
Cons
Stains show more easily on light wood
This round olivewood board is simple but stunning. Its striking grain pattern and rich colors elevate the circular shape and the varying grain ensures each piece is one-of-a-kind.
Inada particularly appreciates a round-shaped charcuterie board because it can stand out as a centerpiece and allows for easy placement of accompaniments around it. The raised edges around the perimeter of the wooden board keep the charcuterie from falling off, which is helpful when passing the board around or prepping ahead of time before moving it to the table.
This board kept its gorgeous appearance after washing and was easy to hand wash since it’s fairly light, plus the lip gave us something to hold on to while cleaning. Just like any other wood board, it's prone to staining and the strawberry juice seeped into the wood overnight and wouldn't wash off. While this happened with other boards as well, it was more noticeable on this one due to the lighter color. A light coating of mineral oil may help prevent some staining, but it’s best to keep items that can stain, like berries, in a separate bowl or protect the board with wax paper. The brand recommends occasionally rubbing the wood with food-safe mineral oil to keep it from drying out.

Pros
Carved-in handles make carrying easy
Darker wood helps hide stains
Can serve on either side of the board
Cons
Hand wash only
The Fable Serving Board is the perfect small charcuterie board for intimate gatherings or solo snacking. The carved-in handles and small, lightweight design helped us carry the board with ease. The slight lip on the edges helps kept food from falling off, but it’s also nice that the board can be flipped over for a completely flat serving surface. In our stain testing, we noticed that strawberries left behind a slight mark, but the dark wood helped disguise it so that it was barely noticeable.
The board is hand wash only and our experts appreciated that food residue wiped away easily with a damp sponge, though larger chunks needed more washing to come off. The brand recommends treating the board regularly with food-grade seed oil or wax to preserve the finish and prevent drying.
Fable also states this board is crafted with FSC-certified European ash wood that’s heat-treated for durability, lighter weight and moisture resistance. You can purchase it in a large size or as part of a set.

Care | Wipe clean with a soft sponge or cloth soaked in warm water |
Pros
Comes with gold charcuterie tools
One of the favorites among testers
Large size to serve multiple guests
Cons
Heavy
For those who love to host large gatherings, the Crate and Barrel large Octavia Marble Board with Cheese Knives is an excellent choice.
The large 23" x 14" marble surface provides a beautiful canvas for creating an artful charcuterie board filled with an array of meats, cheeses, crackers, spreads or whatever else you choose to include. Many of our testers commented this is one of their favorite boards, particularly due to the elegant marble combined with the gold charcuterie tools set into the board. One thing to note, the set-in tools take up a fair amount of space on the board.
When it comes to staining, oil marks were left behind from the salami and there was some strawberry staining, which can happen with any marble board since it’s a porous material. To help protect your board, Inada recommends using something underneath the charcuterie, like wax paper or placing items in a disposable palm leaf bowl which protects the board and can be used to separate foods.
The cool marble helps maintain the temperature of the food and if you’re entertaining outside, Inada suggests setting it on top of ice to help keep everything cold. The downside to large marble boards is that they can be quite heavy. We found the board was somewhat heavy to carry and maneuver around to wash due to the large size and weight.

Dimensions | 23" x 14" x 0.75" |
Weight | 22.5 lbs |
Care | Wipe board with damp cloth, hand wash tools |
Pros
Can use this as one or two charcuterie boards
Comes with two small bowls
Cons
Picks up some stains
This serving board gives you the best of both worlds with acacia wood and slate serving board, and comes with two small ceramic bowls for accoutrements like olives or nuts.
The contrasting colors and textures give this board a modern-yet-rustic feel. The acacia base features recessed slots for the ceramic bowls and the slate board, which are removable, allowing you to serve them as one piece or separately. Inada particularly loves acacia wood and black slate charcuterie boards because they make the food stand out rather than blend in with the board.
When we removed the board from the packaging, we noticed some oil-looking patches on the slate that didn’t come off after washing. While it’s not noticeable when the board is filled with charcuterie, it’s worth noting if it might bother you. The strawberries left behind some marks on the slate, so you’ll want to protect the board to avoid staining.

Pros
Made from unique basalt stone
Each board shape is different
Large serving surface
Cons
Porous material prone to staining
If your decor style leans toward natural and earthy, you’ll love this platter from CB2. Unlike typical wood or marble boards, this one is made from basalt stone giving it a distinctive look that suits many different interior styles.
Each platter is unique because it’s sliced from a large piece of basalt and sanded to create a smooth surface, ensuring a one-of-a-kind piece. Just know that you won’t get exactly what’s pictured on the website. The stone board we tested had an egg-like shape rather than the circular or oval ones shown on the CB2 website.
Straight out of the box the stone looked striking, but it needed a few washes to get clean enough to serve on. This made the stone look more matte than polished, which enhanced the organic look of the stone. In our Lab, salami and strawberries left stains on the stone, which is typical of porous materials so you may want to take precautions to protect it when serving on it.

How we test charcuterie boards

When testing charcuterie boards in the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab, we thoroughly researched the available charcuterie boards on the market. Our experts are also regularly in touch with tableware brands to learn about the latest trends. We narrowed down the list to test based on our categorical expertise and also chose boards that suit a wide variety of preferences. When we test charcuterie boards, our experts look at ease of use and performance.

When we evaluate performance we clean every charcuterie board according to the manufacturer’s instructions and note any differences after washing.

We test staining by putting three types of cheese on each board which include Brie, blue and aged Gouda cheeses. We add three slices of salami and strawberries cut in half, making sure there are at least two halves face up and two halves face down. We leave the food on the charcuterie boards overnight and then clean them the next morning according to their instructions.

For charcuterie boards with instructions to wipe with a damp cloth rather than hand wash, if there was food residue after wiping with a damp cloth, we then hand washed it. After washing, we assessed the staining on each board.

To test scratching, testers sliced cheese as they normally would on the charcuterie boards.
For ease of use we take into account how easy it is to care for the charcuterie board, if it’s dishwasher safe or hand wash only, as well as assessing any features such as raised edges, handles or included accessories like cheese knives. We also note the size and weight.
Finally, we get feedback from testers and the experts in our Lab as well as the experts in the Good Housekeeping Test Kitchen. We also interviewed Inada to share his knowledge on charcuterie boards.
What to look for when shopping

✔️ Material: Whether you prefer a modern, rustic or other look, the choice of material plays a significant role in the style of the charcuterie board. Beyond the design, consider how you plan to use the board and what foods you’ll serve to select a material that suits your needs. Porous materials such as wood, marble and other stones are popular choices for their natural beauty. However, these materials absorb oils and juices, potentially leaving stains, which means you’ll need to use something underneath the charcuterie to prevent staining. Darker materials or finishes can help hide stains.
✔️ Care: Check the manufacturer’s care recommendations. Some charcuterie boards can easily be thrown in the dishwasher, making them ideal for those who prefer not to deal with too much cleanup after having guests. Other platters, particularly those made of natural materials like wood or stone, require more care such as hand washing or wiping with a damp cloth and immediate drying. Some wood boards may also require oiling on occasion to prevent them from drying out.
✔️ Size and weight: When shopping for charcuterie boards, consider the size and weight. A larger board provides ample space for a variety of charcuterie items, making it ideal for large gatherings, but can make storage or hand washing more challenging. Heavier boards are also more difficult to carry. Smaller boards are perfect for a few guests. While they won’t hold as much food compared to larger boards, they are easier to pass around, clean and store once you’re finished.
✔️ Handles and features: Features like handles come in handy and make it easy to move the charcuterie board from the fridge to the table or pass it around. The handles also provide something to hold onto while hand washing. Raised edges can also be helpful when moving a charcuterie board, preventing food from falling off the edge of the board. However, some may prefer the look of a completely flat surface. Also, the edges may potentially get in the way when someone is cutting cheese close to the edge of the board.
How do I clean a charcuterie board?

The best way to clean a charcuterie board depends on the material, but the manufacturer's care instructions should always be followed. Natural materials such as wood, marble or stone are usually not dishwasher safe, so they’ll need hand washing or wiping with a damp cloth. Wood may also need oiling occasionally to prevent it from drying out. However, be sure to check the instructions before washing or oiling the board to prevent damaging it. Also, small dishes or wax paper on the charcuterie board can help prevent additional cleaning and avoid permanent stains.
Tips on how to put together the perfect charcuterie board

The secret to a great charcuterie board starts with the board itself. The material and style of the board give different vibes, whether you’re going for a more casual or formal setting. Also, when choosing a board make sure to keep size, weight and care in mind, making sure it suits your needs.
When choosing charcuterie, Inada tends to stick to the following formula, “One meat, one cheese, one acid, one crunch and a little wow factor.” We've put together some quick tips here (check out our complete guide to charcuterie boards for more):
One key to making a beautiful charcuterie board, when picking from the categories below, it’s best to have a variety of flavors, textures, shapes and colors. Also, while these make a solid starting point, feel free to get creative and put whatever you like on a charcuterie board, there are no rules and the possibilities are endless.
• If your charcuterie board includes meat, choose at least one crowd pleaser, such as salami and then add on other meats with different flavors or textures if needed, depending on crowd size.
• Offer guests a range of options when selecting cheese with varying intensity levels, flavors and textures. Different cheese shapes also offer more visual appeal to the board, such as a wheel of Brie and chunks of Parmesan.
• Choose different shapes, sizes and colors for bread and crackers. Great options include water crackers, baguette slices and many more. Inada also likes pork rinds to add something crunchy and give guests a low-carb and gluten-free option.
• Savory and sweet items such as olives, nuts, fresh and dried fruit, honey, jams and much more complement the cured meats and cheeses well. Dips and cut vegetables are also excellent additions.
