While an old college tee and sweatpants work for bedtime, there's something undeniably luxurious about slipping into a matching PJ set. I used to stick to random tees and bottoms, but after recently testing six sets, my T-shirt stash has taken a backseat.

At the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles, Paper & Apparel Lab, we test all kinds of pajamas. To create our guide to the best pajamas for women, we evaluated over 50 styles, gathering feedback on comfort, fit and durability from consumer testers. Our team, including myself, also assessed some of the most popular sets to see how they held up after multiple washes.

Best Overall

Eberjey Gisele Classic Women's Pajama Set

Gisele Classic Women's Pajama Set

Sizes: XS–4X | Materials: Modal and spandex | Colors: 23

Multiple Textiles Lab experts own the Eberjey Gisele set and all gave positive reviews. In fact, the Gisele Set performed so well among consumer testers and in the Lab that experts awarded it a Good Housekeeping Bedding Award.

"These are hands-down the best pajamas I’ve worn," said Home & Apparel Reviews Analyst Amanda Constantine. The top and bottom are made from a lightweight modal fabric known for its buttery-soft feel. Textiles, Paper and Apparel Lab Product Analyst Grace Wu noted that "the softness does wear off a little over time," but the set is still the nicest pajamas she owns.

"They drape nicely but not so much that it weighs you down or looks too casual," added Wu. If you want a less relaxed look, our pros recommend ordering one size smaller. You can choose from a variety of different colors as well as short sets and nightgowns. Go the extra mile and have a set monogrammed for an extra $15 on Eberjey's site. The PJs are a pretty penny, we won't lie to you, but investing in a high-quality set that will last can be worth the initial splurge.

What testers loved: Testers were impressed with the lightweight feel that didn't seem low quality and liked that the pajamas didn't cling to their body. One tester even reported that these pajamas have remained soft after a year's worth of wear with regular laundering.

Best Value

Old Navy Poplin Pajama Pant Set

Sizes: XXS–XXL Plus | Material: Cotton | Colors: 3

Old Navy sells "two-piece sets for less than the price of a top or bottom at other brands," pointed out Constantine. The brand also has extended sizing with options for plus, tall and petite. Constantine has worn Old Navy PJs for years and finds the quality matches the price. "While they aren’t the most luxurious pajamas, they’re comfy, affordable and come in lots of fun colors and patterns," she said.

The Poplin Pajamas Pant Set retails at under $45 before sales and has over 770 customer reviews. Multiple online shoppers found the set to be comfortable, soft and breathable — not to mention cute. We appreciate the elastic waistband for better stretch.

What testers loved: Not only are Old Navy pajamas comfortable and affordable, according to our tester, but she also appreciated the extensive array of matching family pajamas the brand offers for special occasions and holidays.

Best for Hot Sleepers

Lusomé Eva Sleepshirt

Sizes: XS–XL | Material: Cotton, polyester, micromodal and spandex | Colors: 9

When we last tested the cooling pajamas, Lusomé's Eva Sleepshirt came out on top. It aced our moisture management tests, so it will help you feel cool and dry throughout the night. We liked the soft and drapey fabric but observed some wear after our pilling machine rubbed swatches together 1,000 times. If sleepshirts aren't your preferred pajama style, you can peruse Lusomé's best-sellers that include long and short PJ sets.

What testers loved: Consumer testers across the board found that the sleepshirt helped with temperature regulation and in one instance helped with night sweats for one tester. Another said that even when wearing a long-sleeve version, they didn't wake up in sweat from a hot flash.

Sizes: XS–XL | Material: Mulberry silk | Colors: 9

We have tested multiple products from Fishers Finery, including its silk pajamas, pillowcases, sleep masks and hair scrunchies. A silk PJ set can be expensive, but this 100% Mulberry silk cami and boxer are under $100 for a budget-friendly buy that's still luxurious.

When we tested the set in the Lab, it proved to be durable and moisture-wicking and we couldn't get enough of the silky smooth feel. Our pros were so impressed by its performance that we named Fishers Finery a GH Seal holder. Note that you will have to hand wash these pajamas.

What testers loved: Our testers reported that their PJs were comfortable to wear and noted that the silk felt cool. They also said washing their set at home was easy.

Best Flannel

L.L.Bean Women's Scotch Plaid Flannel Pajamas

Sizes: XS–XL | Material: Portuguese cotton flannel | Colors: 9

I run hot and typically don't wear a flannel top and bottom to bed. But the one pair of flannel pajama pants I lounge in almost 24/7 in the winter is from L.L. Bean. When we tested flannel pajamas in the Lab, the Scotch Plaid Flannel Pajamas outperformed other styles and held up in our durability tests.

We also appreciate that L.L. Bean offers sizes in regular, petite, plus and tall. If you want to gift these pajamas to a friend or loved one, you can add on a personalized monogram for $8.

What testers loved: Testers gave above-average scores for softness. Although I haven't tested this particular style of L.L. Bean PJs, I can emphasize that the brushed exterior of my flannel pants have remained soft over the years of regular washing.

Best for Families

Sizes: Baby, kids, women| Material: Depends on style selected | Colors: 3

Known for its colorful pajama sets, Hanna Andersson is our parenting experts' favorite kids' pajama brand. Its clothes are made from soft, organic cotton you and the little ones will want to cozy up in while you watch a movie together on the couch.

The best part? Everyone can coordinate, thanks to the brand's matching family holiday sets that range from neutral stripes to adorable Easter bunnies and hearts. There are also themed PJs if the kiddos love Mickey Mouse, Spider Man, Sesame Street or the Peanuts.

What testers loved: One tester said Hanna Andersson is their favorite pajama brand for kids and found that the PJs truly last. In fact, one Lab expert inherited hand-me-downs that lasted for both of her kids and even after as hand-me-downs for the next family.

BedHead PJs Let's Do Brunch Long Sleeve Classic Stretch Jersey Set

Let's Do Brunch Long Sleeve Classic Stretch Jersey Set

Sizes: XS–3X | Material: Organic cotton and elastane | Colors: 1

Assistant Commerce Editor Isabella Cavallo typically wears old tanks and shorts to bed, but she has recently become obsessed with her PJ set from BedHead. "The fabric is so soft and breathable and I could wear it even in the summertime without waking up covered in sweat," she said. The cotton knit is breathable to help you stay comfortable year-round.

"The pattern options are so cute, girly and fun," added Cavallo and we have to agree — the mini champagne bottles, coffee cups and croissants on this one are absolutely adorable. But you can browse best-sellers or the entire women's collection if you want floral, checkered or striped.

We also like the hot pink piping along the collar, cuffs and hem, and appreciate the chest and side pockets as well as the elastic waistband for comfort.

What testers loved: From its soft, breathable fabric to the cute patterns you can choose from, our testers were pleasantly surprised with how comfortable BedHead PJS were to sleep in — including staffers who run hot.

Skims Boyfriend Boxer

SHOP MATCHING TOP

Sizes: XXS–4X | Material: Cotton, modal and elastane | Colors: 5

Skims' bras, underwear and shapewear have become insanely popular — so much so that our experts tested multiple styles to see if the brand is worth the splurge. We determined the pieces were worth investing in and are here to say that is also true for the Boyfriend Boxer and T-shirt.

Producer at Hearst Lifestyle Group Tina Martinez wears this set while sleeping or lounging around the house. "The boxers are high-waisted and fitted with a nice amount of stretch so they don't feel restrictive at all," she explained.

At full price, Skims can be pricey. But as someone who owns many briefs that haven't held up the best in the wash, I believe the cost is 100% worth it. Staffers and testers alike find Skims underwear to last wash after wash. I have even found that more delicate pieces with lace detailing don't develop holes after over a year of going through the washer and dryer.

What testers loved: Flattering, comfortable and super soft, Skims' underwear are some of our staffers' favorites. One tester appreciated the oversized fit of the top and the right amount of stretch in the bottoms.

Cozy Earth Soft Woven Long Sleeve Pajama Set

Sizes: XS–XL | Material: Rayon and Tencel | Colors: 3

This long-sleeve pajama set from Cozy Earth made the list of Oprah's favorite things in 2024. Made from a blend of rayon and Tencel, this set is soft and comfortable with a relaxed fit. We like the adjustable waist that ensures a non-restrictive fit and love the three timeless striped patterns.

A couple of five-star reviews include "I’m not a huge pajama girl but I never want to take these off" and "These are the most comfortable pajamas I have had in a long time." The price is undoubtedly expensive, so we recommend taking advantage of sales.

Note that the brand does claim to offer products made with "bamboo," but our experts have found that bamboo is actually rayon with no trace of bamboo in the final material.

What online shoppers loved: Several satisfied online reviewers noted how breathable this set was. Even those who don't typically wear traditional pajamas said they were impressed.

Printfresh Long PJ Set in Bagheera

Sizes: XXS–6X | Material: Not listed | Colors: 29

Constantine recommends Printfresh for its vast array of PJ sets available in fun patterns and extended sizing from XXS to 6X and options in tall. The pajamas are also made from organic cotton, according to the brand, and "have a crisp feel but aren’t too crunchy," said Constantine.

Textiles, Paper and Apparel Lab Associate Director Emma Seymour appreciates the thick and luxurious feel of these PJs. "They look dressier than other pajamas, so I feel comfortable wearing them in front of company," she explained. Seymour even wore them on a girl's trip and all of her friends ended up ordering a pair themselves. If you want an option for the summer months, Seymour loves the Short PJ Set in Bagheera.

Both the long and short sets are pricey, but are worth the investment and can even make for a very special gift, adds Seymour.

What testers loved: These crisp cotton PJs are so much fun to wear on a random Tuesday or when you have friends over for a sleepover (hey, adults can have sleepovers too).

Aerie Real Soft Pajamas

Real Soft Pajamas

Sizes: XXS–XXL | Material: Rayon and elastane | Colors: 4

Aerie is one of my favorite brands for affordable PJs, underwear and loungewear. Wu owns Real Soft Pajamas and says they are "soft, stretchy and super comfortable." Compared to her Eberyjey Gisele PJs, Wu found these to be slightly thicker and warmer, a great choice for the colder months. They do have a more oversized fit to them and the bottoms tend to hang low on Wu's waist even after she ties the elastic waist.

What testers loved: Our tester found this PJ set to be soft and warm with a slouchier fit that is equally trendy and comfy.

How we chose the best pajamas

double line break

In the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles, Paper and Apparel Lab, we evaluate everyday clothing essentials from the best undershirts and loungewear brands to the most comfortable PJ sets. To find the best pajamas for women, we pulled testing data from the over 50 different styles we have tested over the years.

When evaluating pajamas in the Lab, our experts assess fabric strength, pilling resistance, washability, shrinkage and other properties like moisture management, when relevant. We then send PJs to consumer testers who report back on comfort, softness, fit and more. We also tapped GH staffers to learn more about their favorite pajamas.

What to look for when shopping for pajamas

double line break

✔️ Style & fit: Depending on the season and your personal preferences, you may be able to narrow down the type of pajamas you're after. Sleep shirts or nightgowns are one-piece options that allow for more airflow than longer bottoms. If you prefer a full set, you have the option of long sets, short sets or a mix of a short-sleeve shirt and long pants or vice versa. Within sets, you can also choose between looser bottoms or more fitted pants, such as joggers. More form-fitting styles are often better at trapping heat for colder months while relaxed options can provide extra ventilation.

✔️ Material: With so many different kinds of fabrics used for pajamas, it's easy to get overwhelmed. Here's information about each kind of material you'll likely encounter when shopping.

  • Cotton is the most popular fiber in the world for its standout softness and breathability. Pajamas made with woven cotton fabric are often more lightweight and either crisp or smooth whereas those made with knit cotton offer a softer T-shirt-like feel.
  • Flannel is a type of cotton fabric that's brushed or napped, allowing for loose fibers near the surface for a softer feel. It's known for trapping in heat for added coziness and warmth.
  • Silk is a luxuriously smooth fiber often said to help regulate your body temperature and maintain smoother skin. Studies show that tossing and turning at night creates friction that can lead to creases in the skin, but dermatologists say that smoother surfaces may gradually reduce this effect over time. Stay wary when presented with unrealistic promises like fewer breakouts or anti-aging benefits though.
  • Polyester is a synthetic fiber with excellent durability and affordability, making it a versatile option. These fabrics typically feel smooth when woven and soft when knit.
  • Microfiber fabrics, known for their buttery feel, are typically made of synthetic fibers like polyester or nylon.
  • Rayon, modal and lyocell fabrics are known for their super soft and almost cool-to-the-touch feel. These regenerated cellulosic fibers are considered semi-synthetics and are prized for their drapey look and soft texture. Fabrics that claim to be made of bamboo, eucalyptus and beech trees fall into this classification, but be aware: These fabrics are mislabeled and use misleading marketing. When we tested products using these fabrics, we found that there was no more presence of bamboo, eucalyptus or beech trees after all the processing required to spin fibers.
  • Linen has a unique texture from the looser weave using hollow-core fibers for additional air circulation and breathability. Pajamas made of this fiber tend to get softer over time.
