If you're looking for the ultimate luxurious experience at bedtime, consider trying a pair of silk pajamas. Although they tend to come with a higher price tag, there are quite a few benefits to wearing silk pajamas, like their ability to help regulate temperature and the fact that they're gentle against the skin, so we think silk pieces are totally worth the investment to up your pajama game.

At Good Housekeeping Institute, our Textiles Lab experts analyze all sorts of pajamas — from cooling pajamas to fuzzy flannels and, of course, silk options. We also test a variety of silk products including silk scrunchies and bedding in our Lab and with our consumer testers for properties like strength, washability and overall comfort.

Pros

  • Adjustable straps for better fit
  • Moisture-wicking material is great for hot sleepers
  • Resisted wear in Lab evaluations

Cons

  • Hand wash only

If you're looking for the luxury of silk pajamas but don't want to pay the luxury price tag, Fishers Finery's 100% silk cami and boxer set is a total steal at less than $90.

Our Textiles Lab pros are impressed by the brand, which has earned the Good Housekeeping Seal for its silk pajamas, pillowcases, sleep masks and scrunchies. In Lab tests for abrasion, the silk material proved durable, and in moisture management evaluations, it also proved to be moisture-wicking, making it a great option for sweaty sleepers. This set is hand wash only, but we think the incredible price is worth the extra care.

Best Value Satin Pajamas

Victoria's Secret Satin Long Pajama Set

Pros

  • Easier to care for than true silk
  • Available in short, regular and long sizing

Cons

  • Not as breathable as true silk

As a cost-effective alternative to genuine silk, consider a synthetic satin pajama set. A synthetic satin set like this one from Victoria's Secret that's made with polyester offers some of the same benefits of real silk for a fraction of the cost.

Our analysts love that the synthetic fabric is still super smooth and gentle against the skin and that it's extra durable, so it's easier to wash and care for. It won't be as breathable as real silk, though, which means it's not great for hot sleepers. You can choose between short, regular and long options and from sizes XS to XXL.

Pros

  • Great option for sweaty sleepers
  • Loved by testers for being luxe and comfortable
  • Machine washable

Cons

  • Lower scores in Lab tests for strength

LilySilk has a strong presence on Amazon, offering all sorts of silk products on the platform, from sheets and pillowcases to blouses and scrunchies.

We tested some of the brand's silk material in our Lab and didn't find it to be quite as durable as the other silks we evaluated, but it did perform well for moisture management — that means it's a great cooling pajama pick for hot and sweaty sleepers. Our consumer testers and product analysts loved LilySilk's pajamas, with one tester sharing that the pajamas helped to reduce her night sweats! Other testers raved about the smooth and comfortable material and described the set as "luxe."

Pros

  • Lots of beautiful prints and colors to choose from
  • Breathable, lightweight material

Cons

  • Analyst noticed loose threads around seams

One Lab analyst who owns this set described it as "stunning," raving about the beautiful pattern and color options available and just how silky the material felt.

Plus, she is a hot sleeper who stayed cool in this lightweight, breathable pajama set. However, she did notice that there were some loose threads around the seams of both the shorts and top when she took them out of the package. When we washed this set according to the care instructions, we didn't notice any changes in appearance or additional fraying, and the material felt just as smooth and soft as it did prior to being washed.

Best Silk Pajama Top

Quince 100% Washable Silk Pajama Button Up Top

Pros

  • Buttery soft, brushed feel
  • Looked great after washing

Cons

  • Top is cropped to be short

The majority of silk pajamas feel and look the same with a super smooth hand and shiny appearance. This isn't the case with Quince's washable silk pajamas that have a brushed feel. One Lab expert described them as "buttery soft, not slick like other silk pajamas."

You do have to purchase the brand's pajama tops and bottoms separately — helpful if you wear different sizes and need to mix and match. This particular style of top is cropped, so it is on the shorter side, but it didn't shrink or change in appearance when we washed it according to the provided care instructions. We recommend pairing it with the silk pajama pants, which have a slit up the side of the leg for easy movement and a stretchy waistband for a comfortable fit.

Pros

  • Great value
  • Reviewers and Lab analysts say they're smooth and comfy

Cons

  • Reviewers say to size up

Silk pajama sets, especially long-sleeve tops and pants, can be pretty pricey, but this two-piece set from THXSILK is only $160 and more affordable than some short sets and slips. A Textiles Lab analyst who tried these pajamas out described them as smooth and said they were a bit short but fit true-to-size, while online reviewers encourage sizing up.

One reviewer shared, "The quality is amazing, [and] they're super comfortable" and added that she planned to buy the set in every color. If you prefer a nightgown or robe instead, the brand offers a ton of different styles, and there are even couples sets available for an added value so that you can match your significant other for less.

Best Short Silk Pajamas

Lunya Washable Silk Tee Set

Pros

  • Available in XS to 2X
  • Option to personalize with embroidery

Cons

  • Top is oversized

Lunya's silk tee pajama set is loved by reviewers and Textiles Lab analysts who say it's super comfortable, luxurious and smooth. According to one analyst, the top is stylish enough that it could be worn on its own as a blouse, and the color is vibrant and "gorgeous."

When we washed it in our Lab (yes, it's machine washable), we didn't notice any significant changes in appearance, and the silk fabric felt just as smooth afterwards. If you want to add an extra personal touch, you can have your initials embroidered on the set for an added fee. The most common complaint with these pajamas is that the top is very oversized, so if you prefer a more form-fitting style, you may want to size down or choose one of the brand's other pajama sets.

Best Luxury Silk Pajamas

Olivia von Halle Lila Odyssea Silk Satin Pajama Set

Pros

  • Fashionable prints
  • Elegant details like mother of pearl buttons

Cons

  • Hand wash or dry clean recommended

When you're searching for the ultimate luxurious silk pajamas, look no further than this chic pair! Olivia von Halle's silk satin pajama sets are definitely on the more expensive side, but they're made of high quality silk, screen-printed and designed with elegant details like mother of pearl buttons and hand-crafted piped trim.

Our Lab analysts had the chance to analyze the pajamas in person and were impressed by the beautiful designs and smooth feel of the silk. The brand does recommend hand washing or dry cleaning to best care for the pajamas; they're not a low-maintenance set. If you love the designs but are shopping with a lower budget, the brand offers cotton and silk blend sets, which are just as beautiful and have a crisper feel.

How we choose the best silk pajamas

"

At the Good Housekeeping Institute, our textiles experts test silk products including apparel and bedding in our Lab and with consumer testers. Although we haven't formally tested all of the pajama picks in this article, we have evaluated all of the genuine silk pajamas in person and have put some of the materials through more rigorous tests with our standardized equipment.

When we test silk fabric in the Lab, we evaluate properties like strength, washability and abrasion resistance. Our Instron machine pulls apart swatches of silk fabric, which helps us to understand the fabric's strength. Our Martindale machine tests abrasion by rubbing silk fabric against a wool material. And the Moisture Management Tester (MMT) wets the silk material with a synthetic sweat solution to analyze how well the fabric wicks away moisture. Along with running standardized tests, we also launder the silk products according to their care label instructions, measuring shrinkage after washing and rating changes in appearance or fabric feel.

Lastly, our consumer testers and product analysts try out the products in real life to provide us with feedback about characteristics like overall comfort, fit and temperature regulation.

What to look for when shopping for the best silk pajamas

"

Most silks may look the same, but there's more to silk than meets the eye. Here's what to consider when shopping for silk pajamas:

✔️ Understand silk vs. satin: Silk is a natural fiber from silkworms, while satin is a weave type. Satin doesn't have to be made of silk fibers and is often made of synthetic fibers like polyester instead, which imitate the feel of silk. Synthetic satin is easier to care for and more affordable than true silk satin, but it's not as breathable or comfortable to wear, especially if you sleep hot. Be careful when shopping for genuine silk pajamas — some brands will try to pass off synthetic satin pajamas as real silk satin, often calling them "silky satin." Look for 100% mulberry silk options, which are made of uniform, higher quality fibers.

✔️ Check the silk momme: Silk momme is used to describe the weight of silk fabric or how much silk is used in the fabric, and it's common to find silk mommes between 13 to 22. Most of our silk pajama picks have a momme of around 19, but in our Lab evaluations, silks with a momme of 22 or higher rated the best for durability and performance properties like strength, holding up in the wash and resisting wear from abrasion.

✔️ Read the care instructions: Silk fabrics are delicate and known to require extra delicate care — hand washing or dry cleaning. However, easy-to-care-for, machine washable silk is becoming more common. Just note that although many silk pajamas are machine washable, they still typically need to be washed with cool water on a gentle cycle and cannot be tumble dried. Check the product's care label or care instructions listed in the description online for best cleaning practices.
