A white T-shirt is a classic wardrobe staple that everyone should have in their closet. You can dress them up or wear them casually, and they're a go-to, effortless option to throw on when you just can't find anything else to wear. With so many variations of T-shirts out there, you'd think it would be easy to score the perfect white tee, but finding the right one that keeps its shape, isn't overly sheer, feels soft and actually fits can feel impossible, and you may end up with a closet full of white tees that just aren't cutting it.
That's why we put white T-shirts to the test in the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles, Paper and Apparel Lab. We first scoured the web to find the most popular white tees online and asked for recommendations from GH analysts and editors. From there, we chose 20 T-shirts to evaluate in the Lab, analyzing construction, measuring shrinkage and assessing opacity to make sure they weren't too see-through, along with rating properties like softness and appearance before and after laundering.
We also shared the tees with consumer testers who were able to incorporate the styles into their own wardrobes, sharing details about how they styled the tops, what they liked and disliked and their thoughts on characteristics like overall fit, comfort, softness, appearance and more. Whether you're looking for something relaxed and breezy or prefer a more structured, polished style, we've got you covered.
Keep reading to learn all about how we test white T-shirts and for a helpful shopping guide, but first, here are our favorite white tees.
Pros
One of the highest opacity scores
Standard fit looks great tucked and untucked
Quality construction
Cons
May fit tightly across the chest
For just $15, Uniqlo's U Crew Neck T-Shirt is an affordable option that outperformed styles twice the price in our tests. This popular white tee has a standard fit that's not too loose or clingy, and the body-skimming style looks great undone or tucked into your favorite pair of pants. Some testers with large chests and broader shoulders say it feels tight across the chest, so we recommend using Uniqlo's size assist tool to help you find the perfect fit, especially if you're busty or in between sizes.
One GH analyst who swears by this tee said, "Whenever I want to wear a white tee, I always reach for this one" and shared that it's the perfect T-shirt to dress up or down, emphasizing that she can wear it with jeans or sweats and that it looks great layered beneath a sweater.
The brand recommends hanging the tee to dry, so it requires more thoughtful care than some of the other styles we tested, but skipping the dryer will keep the tee in tip-top shape longer, and it looked nearly new after laundering. The structured fabric also had some of the highest opacity scores in our tests, so you won't have to worry about your favorite black bra showing through your white top.
Sizes: XXS–XXL | Material: 100% cotton | Colors: 11 options
Pros
Classic style
Loved by tens of thousands of online reviewers
Great for DIY projects
Cons
Notable shrinkage
You can't go wrong with a classic T-shirt from Hanes, and we and tens of thousands of Amazon reviewers recommend the brand's Perfect-T. It retails for just $12 and is frequently on sale for less, so you can stock up on a few without breaking the bank. Because the tee is so affordable, it's not the highest quality option we tested. The material wasn't the softest or most opaque, but it also wasn't overly sheer, and the 100% cotton material didn't feel stiff after a cycle in the washer and dryer.
The classic style T-shirt has a slightly oversized fit, and the brand claims it's "pre-shrunk," but it shrunk more than any other style in our tests, so you can expect it to be a little more fitted after laundering. Testers appreciated the roomier cut, with one sharing, "I like that it's not quite as boxy as a basic men's tee, but it doesn't cling to my chest or stomach, and there's plenty of room in the sleeves."
The white color is available in sizes S-XL on Amazon, but Hanes offers the tee in S–3XL on its site. If you love a DIY project, this style is a also favorite of GH analysts and online reviewers who say the basic tee is perfect for tie-dying or vinyl decals.
Sizes: S–XL | Material: 100% cotton | Colors: 21 options
Pros
One of the softest in our tests
Minimal shrinkage in the wash
Options for long and petite torsos
Cons
Deep wrinkles when removed from dryer
We were blown away by how well the affordable Bestee Crew-Neck T-Shirt performed in our evaluations, and like the name implies, this shirt is bound to become your closet's best friend. The material combines cotton with modal and spandex and is seriously cozy, earning the tee one of the highest softness ratings in our tests. It's a more fitted style, so the sleeves are shorter and the tee is snug, but because of the spandex, it doesn't feel restrictive.
While most brands offer their tees in a limited size range and just one fit, Old Navy carries this style in petite and long torso options and in sizes XS through 4X. One six-foot tester shared that the long torso style is the perfect length for tucking into her favorite trousers, and she loved that it didn't ride up when she raised her arms. The tee held up well in our wash tests with minimal shrinkage, but there were some deeper set wrinkles when we pulled the T-shirt from the dryer right after the cycle ended.
Sizes: XS–4X with tall and petite options | Material: 57% cotton, 38% modal and 5% spandex | Colors: 4 options
Pros
High-quality cotton
No shrinkage in the wash
Soft and drapey
Cons
Shorter length
Not too thick, not too thin, not too structured, not too clingy: According to one tester, this lived-in tee from Buck Mason is "everything I want in a white T-shirt." The T-shirt is made of 100% Pima cotton, which is a long-staple cotton that has a softer, more luxurious feel than shorter cotton fibers. It has a soft and drapey feel like you've already been wearing it for years.
This is the shortest of the T-shirts we tested with a 19.5-inch length from the shoulder seam to the hemline, so it hits right at the natural waistline on most wearers without being too cropped, but one tester wished it were a little longer and recommended sizing up for a roomier fit. You shouldn't have to worry about it shortening in the laundry, though, because the T-shirt held up beautifully in our wash tests without shrinkage. One tester said that the top is the "perfect length to pair with high-waisted jeans" and added that she liked the "more casual" style.
Sizes: XS–XXL | Material: 100% Pima cotton | Colors: 8 options
Pros
Made with organic cotton
Relaxed fit
Thicker collar for an elevated look
Cons
Tester reported shrinkage in the wash
For an everyday style that's substantial enough to wear to work but comfy enough to sport at home, try this tee from Faherty. The Sunwashed Crew is a medium-weight T-shirt that has a worn-in feel and is made of organic cotton. It has a more relaxed fit than other styles we've tested with longer sleeves and a wider collar opening, and we love fit paired with the the thicker collar, cuffs and hem, which give the tee an elevated look.
One GH analyst said, "This white T-shirt is seriously the best. I've tried so many styles, and I can't stop myself from gravitating back to this one." While we haven't washed this style in the Lab, one tester shared that it shrunk in the wash over time and recommended sizing up if you're in between two sizes.
Sizes: XXS–XXL | Material: 100% organic cotton | Colors: 4 options
Pros
Great value pick
Highest softness rating
Nice stretch
Cons
Thinner than other styles
We can't get over how soft and cozy this tee from A New Day feels for its incredibly low price tag. When we touched all of the T-shirts one after the other in the Textiles Lab, we knew right away that this style was the softest. The airy T-shirt is made of a blend of cotton and modal, which is why it's so comfortable, and it has nice stretch for a relaxed feel.
It's thinner than other tees in our tests and is a bit see-through with lower opacity scores (you can see the printed label through the back of the shirt), so you may want to stick to wearing a nude bra underneath. But the lightweight feel makes it perfect for pairing with a skirt or your favorite denim shorts in the spring and summer, and it's even comfy enough that you could get away with wearing it as a pajama top.
Sizes: XS–4X | Material: 60% cotton and 40% modal | Colors: 22 options
Pros
Minimal shrinkage in wash tests
Classic style
Extended size options available
Cons
Some rippling at the collar after washing
This white T-shirt from GAP is as classic as they come. The tee has a straighter cut but a relaxed feel that you can easily wear tucked or untucked and on its own or layered under a sweater or top. If you're not a fan of a looser silhouette, we recommend sizing down for a snug fit. To achieve the perfect fit, GAP also offers tall and petite sizing for long and shorter torsos.
We love that the tee has a more pronounced collar but isn't structured, so it's drapey and breathable. Testers gave it high ratings for overall comfort and described the fabric as "smooth," and they appreciated that you couldn't see the outline of their bra through the material.
Sometimes, organic cotton can feel stiff after a wash cycle, but this tee felt just as comfy when we pulled it from the dryer. A GH analyst who has worn this shirt for years shared, "I swear it feels softer with every wash." We did note some rippling around the collar, but the tee was in great shape overall without deep wrinkles or fraying.
Sizes: XXS–XXL | Material: 100% cotton | Colors: 4 options
Pros
Lightweight material
Quality construction
Minimal shrinkage in wash tests
Cons
Sheerer than other styles
This V-neck T-shirt from Madewell has a slouchy, relaxed cut and is made of a light and airy cotton that testers said felt soft to the touch. It's thinner than other tees and has a slub design with some sheerer spots, so it works best paired with a nude bra or with a cute bralette showing underneath. The cut of the V-neckline is wide and deep but not too deep, so it doesn't show off excessive cleavage, but it still highlights the collarbones.
Our testers appreciated the quality of the T-shirt, and we were impressed by the construction in the Textiles Lab, too, noting that the seams and stitching looked great both before and after laundering. And there was only minimal shrinkage in the wash.
Sizes: XXS–XXL | Material: 100% cotton | Colors: 4 options
Pros
Organic cotton fabric
Structured look
Testers gave it high softness scores
Cons
One tester said the neckline sat too high
If you're looking for a white tee that you can get away with wearing to the office, this one from Cos has a polished look that testers love. The substantial T-shirt earned the highest opacity scores in our tests — the material completely concealed a black bra. Testers loved not having to worry about what they wore underneath the top, describing the fabric and cut as "forgiving" and sharing that it didn't cling to their stomachs or chests.
The tee may be heavyweight, but it's not stiff. One happy tester shared, "It's the softest T-shirt I've owned. I didn't realize something so structured could feel so soft." The collar is thick and sits higher on the neck than other styles we tried, which one tester found a little restrictive, but others said it helped to elevate the look of the T-shirt.
Testers paired the tee with everything from jeans to maxi skirts and said it looked good on its own and under sweaters and blazers. When we washed the T-shirt according to its care instructions, the tee looked good as new with no major changes in appearance and only minimal shrinkage.
Sizes: XXS–XL | Material: 100% organic cotton | Colors: 10 options
Pros
Great for layering
Organic cotton fabric
Pocketed option available
Cons
Slightly cropped length
Known for its basics and closet staples like wool sweaters and high-waisted denim, Everlane is a go-to for sustainable styles, and the brand's organic cotton tees are a favorite of GH analysts. The medium weight T-shirt has the perfect boxy fit, and it isn't too stiff or overly drapey. One analyst said she loves wearing it under a sweater, adding that the slightly structured collar looks great peeking out from underneath.
This tee isn't the shortest one we tested, but it is slightly cropped, so it's great for a trendy French tuck in the front of your pants but won't stay completely tucked as easily as a longer T-shirt. You can choose this basic crew style or opt for a pocketed style, and if you bundle three of the tees, you get them for a discounted price.
Sizes: XXS–XXL | Material: 100% organic cotton | Colors: 18 options
Pros
Uneven hemline is longer in the back
Testers gave it high softness scores
Longer sleeves for added comfort
Cons
Slub material is sheerer than other tees
Specifically designed for plus-size bodies, this tee from Lane Bryant (one of our favorite plus-size brands) is available in sizes 10/12 through 38/40, and there are long options for taller shoppers. One tester shared that she appreciated the cut of the tee, adding that "It wasn't too tight or clingy." The tee has an uneven hemline that dips down a little longer in the back for added coverage, which our tester loved, and the brand said its "perfect sleeves" are also designed to extend further down the arm for added comfort.
The T-shirt uses a cotton and polyester blend slub material that's sheerer in some spots than others. One tester wished it were a little more opaque, adding that she wore it with a sweater on top during the winter, but she "would probably choose a tank top or something similar to wear under it" during the warmer months. The material earned the tee high softness scores in the Textiles Lab and perfect scores with testers, and it felt just as soft after being laundered.
Sizes: 10/12–38/40 | Material: 60% cotton and 40% polyester | Colors: White and black
Pros
Figure-hugging look
No shrinkage in wash tests
Soft and stretchy
Cons
Lots of static in the wash
Abercrombie & Fitch's best-selling tee is a formfitting style that takes inspiration from the '90s, and according to our testers, you'll forget you're wearing it. The cotton and elastane-blend material is seriously cozy and one of the softest in our tests, thanks to its brushed design. It hugs your figure but isn't too tight or restrictive, and the shorter cap sleeves leave lots of room for movement.
The brand calls the style "Tuckable," and we love that it doesn't bunch up under the waistline of your pants. Our testers agree, with one sharing, "It was the perfect length to tuck into my jeans without riding up or having too much extra fabric." When it comes to styling this T-shirt, our testers wore it with everything from slacks and a blazer to a leather skirt. If you prefer a cropped style instead of a tucked tee, opt for the brand's original Essential Baby Tee with a shorter hemline. Know that when we washed the T-shirt in the Textiles Lab, it produced more static than any other style and attracted some lint.
Sizes: XXS–XL | Material: 95% cotton and 5% elastane | Colors: 5 options
Pros
Great stretch
High softness scores
Slimmer cut
Cons
Notable wrinkling in the dryer
Made of a blend of 50% cotton and 50% modal, this T-shirt from Quince is buttery soft. The lightweight material is super stretchy and drapes beautifully, and one tester shared, "It feels nicer on my skin" than 100% cotton T-shirts she's worn. It is thin, though, and a tester noted that she can see the outline of her nude bra through the shirt, but it wasn't the sheerest top in our evaluations.
Like the name implies, the scoop-neck style scoops lower than a crewneck, and it has more of a U-shaped neckline in the front, and the tee has a slimmer silhouette with a more formfitting cut that our testers described as "feminine" and "flattering." The T-shirt performed well in our wash tests without major shrinkage, but the fabric was a little wrinkly when we pulled it from the dryer.
Sizes: XS–XL | Material: 50% cotton and 50% modal | Colors: 7 options
Pros
Moisture-wicking
Ribbed fabric with four-way stretch
Performed well in wash tests
Cons
Can see the outline of a bra underneath
Vuori is our favorite loungewear brand, and we love its everyday essentials like its top-tested performance joggers and this fitted tee. It's pricier than other styles we evaluated, but it's built to last. One GH analyst who owns this cropped tee said it's her favorite ribbed style, and she's been wearing and washing it regularly for years and shares that it's still in great condition. When we laundered it in the Textiles Lab, it there was just minimal shrinkage, and the tee held its shape without wrinkling or puckering.
The dense modal rayon and elastane material has four-way stretch and is moisture-wicking, so it's great for lounging around at home, wearing as part of your airport outfit or sporting to yoga class. One tester shared that she was impressed that you couldn't see sweat stains through the T-shirt and said it still felt and smelled fresh after a long day of travel. Despite the denser material, you can see the outline of a bra underneath and can see a dark bra through the T-shirt.
Sizes: XXS–XXL | Material: 87% modal rayon and 13% elastane | Colors: 4 options
How we tested the best white T-shirts for women

In the Good Housekeeping Institute, we test all kinds of apparel — from sustainable denim to wide-leg pants to swimwear and, of course, T-shirts. To determine which white T-shirts are the best, we first reviewed dozens of popular options online, considering factors like style and fiber content and reading real-user reviews. We then chose 20 styles to put to the test in the Textiles Lab and shared with consumer testers. Here's a look into how we evaluated each T-shirt:

We inspected each T-shirt closely, looking at the differences in fabrication and reviewing overall construction.

We placed each T-shirt on a dress form to determine how the shirts fit, assessing if the shirts were boxy, oversized, cropped, formfitting, etc., along with how the neckline looked and how the material draped. We also used the dress form to consider the opacity of the material of each T-shirt. We fitted the dress form in a black bra and then rated how distinctly you could see the black bra through the T-shirt, with more opaque materials receiving higher scores.

To determine shrinkage and wear, we first measured the length of each T-shirt from the shoulder seam to hemline and then laundered the shirts according to their care instructions. After washing and drying the shirts, we made notes on any visual changes in appearance like fraying at the seams or wrinkles and dimpling in the material. Then we remeasured the T-shirts from the shoulder seam to hemline, using our pre- and post-wash measurements to calculate shrinkage.

Along with testing the T-shirts in the Textiles Lab, we shared samples with consumer testers of different body types, ranging in size from XS to XXL and torso lengths petite through tall. Our testers wore the T-shirts and provided us with real-user feedback about the overall fit, appearance, comfort, softness and opacity. They also highlighted what they specifically liked and disliked about each T-shirt and had the opportunity to share how the T-shirt they tested compared to others they've worn and how it held up in the wash.
What to look for when shopping for the best white T-shirts for women

White T-shirts may be basic at their core, but they're not all created equally. Here are a few things to consider when you're shopping for a new white T-shirt:
✔️ Material: The majority of white T-shirts are made of a knit fabric called jersey, which has a soft feel and offers stretch for comfort. Most are made of 100% cotton, a breathable natural fiber, but others combine cotton with fibers like polyester or rayon to enhance the performance or softness of the material. If your white tee is formfitting, you may also find spandex or elastane blended in for even more stretch.
✔️ Weight: Lighter weight, drapey T-shirts are typically thinner than heavy weight styles and are sheerer as a result, so you're likely to see the outline or color of your bra peeking through. A heavyweight T-shirt is a bit stiffer and more structured, so it may not feel quite as soft, but the material is better at concealing your undergarments.
✔️ Neckline: Crewneck tees are by far the most classic with a banded collar fitting closely to your neck. V-neck T-shirts have a neckline cut in a "V" shape, which extends downwards, revealing more of your chest. Scoop-neck T-shirts have more of a "U" shaped neckline and feel less restricting around your neck and shoulders.
✔️ Length: Classic T-shirts are typically 24- to 25-inches long from shoulder to hem and will hit just below your waist and above your hips, which makes them easy to tuck into a pair of pants or leave undone for a more casual look. Many brands are now offering cropped styles with shortened hemlines at or above the waistline, measuring 19.5 inches or less from shoulder to hem. We recommend reviewing the length of the T-shirt before buying, especially if you're tall or petite.
✔️ Fit: Compared to men's tees, women's T-shirts tend to have a slimmer cut to emphasize your shape without being overly bulky or too restrictive. A formfitting tee is designed to hug your curves, while boxy cut tees have a squared shape for a more modern look. And relaxed or boyfriend style T-shirts typically have an oversized fit with looser necklines.
