It doesn't take long into parenthood to feel as if you're surrounded by big hunks of plastic. There are strollers, baby jumpers and playhouses that make your days possible, but also might give you your first carbon-footprint guilt trip. Even if you never felt particularly earthy-crunchy before, after changing hundreds of diapers you might find yourself looking for small ways to go greener.
Another thing that might light your awareness of what you're buying for your little one? Watching them bite down on pretty much everything you hand them. It will have you double-checking that their sippy cup is BPA-free plastic, and it might have you deciding that you want some more eco-friendly toys in the toy rotation.
For this list, we considered some of our favorite toys, looking at whether they are made of sustainable materials, such as wood that's been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), or whether they're made from recycled or upcycled plastic. We looked for non-toxic finishes and extra touches, such as cardboard packaging that's 100% recyclable. And, of course, we wanted them to be just as engaging as other top toys. Luckily, many of the picks on our list have been tested by the Good Housekeeping Institute with real kids, so we know they have the all-important fun factor, too.
