There's a line in Knocked Up when Paul Rudd's Pete says wistfully, "I wish I liked anything as much as my kids like bubbles." We get it! Turning on a bubble machine is among the best kids' activities and great for parents, because you can catch your breath while your kids go wild.

Experts in the Good Housekeeping Institute have tested more than a dozen bubble machines over the past few years, evaluating general bubble output, ease of use and quality of construction. While our tester kids reliably flipped out and danced around in front of automatic bubble makers, they got focused and working when we handed them a wand and showed them to how make bubbles on their own — so we included a bubble-bucket choice as well.

Bubble solution matters. We achieved the greatest quantity of high-floating bubbles when we filled a machine with Gazillion Bubbles original solution. Also, every machines works best if you rinse it clean after each use.

Pros

  • Plugs in or uses batteries, not included
  • Has a carry handle
  • Goes for 20-30 minutes before needing a refill
  • Fan blows a lot of bubbles quickly
  • More than 11,000 five-star Amazon reviews

Cons

  • Not spill-proof
  • Does not come with bubble solution

Six spinning wands on this practically professional bubble machine can be set for two levels of output. Though, knowing kids, they're always going to want it set to the max.

It holds up to 12.5 fluid ounces of any bubble solution (not included). Adults use it for weddings and parties so you can imagine the high volume of bubbles that continuously stream out of this. (The brand says 18,000 bubbles per minute; it's unclear how they count those.) As of press time it's got more than 11,000 five-star reviews on Amazon.

We like that this comes with a (short) USB plug, so if you have an outlet handy, you can keep it running. If you want to take it to a park or elsewhere with no outlet access, it can run on four C-size batteries instead. Either way, it goes for 20 to 30 minutes before needing more bubble solution.

A handle makes this easy to carry it around, but it's not spill-proof, so talk your toddler out of walking around with it. The fan starts up immediately and bubbles start pouring out seconds after you turn it on, so use this outdoors. The bubbles come out of the side, and you can position it to blow bubbles in whatever direction you wish.

Fill this between the minimum and maximum lines, and clean it often, to get the best performance.

Gazillion Tornado Bubble Machine

Tornado Bubble Machine

Pros

  • Bubbles go straight up and high
  • Easy for kids to gather around, like a bubble campfire
  • Comes with some bubble solution to start
  • Bargain price

Cons

  • Bottle it comes with drains within 30 minutes

For cheap thrills, this brand wins. The Tornado Bubble Machine claims to blow 4,500 bubbles per minute, and our kid tester liked it best because it creates a ton of bubbles that blow straight up.

As parents, we noted that the one bottle of solution it comes with drains within 20 to 30 minutes, and that bottle has a special top to continuously feed into the Tornado, so you have to use that. We could not find refill bottles, so we suggest picking up a 4-liter bottle of Gazillion Bubbles and refilling the Tornado's special bottle using that.

Also, this had to run for a minute before the eight rotating wands really got going but once they did, the bubbles never stopped until the solution ran dry. It's fun for kids' parties or a playdate because kids can gather around it, like a bubble campfire, watching the bubbles go up and not sideways.

Best for a Kids' Party

Kidzlane Bubble Dolphin

Bubble Dolphin

Pros

  • Cute designs for parties or events
  • Plenty of bubbles
  • Comes with enough solution to refill the dolphin

Cons

  • Fewer bubbles than our top two choices

Testers responded to the adorable dolphin design of this bubble machine, perfect for an under-the-sea themed kids' party or waterside picnic, vacation or family reunion. There's a bubble shark version, too, or a bubble duck or a bubble penguin.

This comes with two 8-ounce bottles of bubble solution and the dolphin can hold 6 ounces at at time, so our experts appreciated that you have enough to do a couple of rounds of bubble-making right off the bat. Just don't forget to buy batteries, which, like with all of the machines on our list, are not included.

The bubbles come out of the dolphin's mouth sideways, powered by 10 rotating wands, and you can position it to aim the bubbles wherever you want.

Kidzlane claims that it puts out 500 to 1,000 bubbles per minute, which is less than our top two choices, but it's still plenty, and a delight to small children.

Best Traditional Bucket

Fubbles No-Spill Big Bubble Bucket

On Sale
No-Spill Big Bubble Bucket

Pros

  • Spill-proof bucket
  • Three wands included. This is kid-powered!
  • Holds 20 ounces of bubble solution
  • Age-graded for young toddlers

Cons

  • No bubble soap included

TBH, this isn't a bubble machine in that there's no batteries, plugs or motors and the kids have to do their own blowing. But if you're shying away from letting them blow their own because of the mess, this Fubbles reusable bucket has it solved.

The patented design really is spill-proof, so if your kids kick it over or it tips over in your car there's no worry. It's age-graded from 18 months so even young toddlers can play.

This comes with three wands so three kids can be dipping into the bucket at once. But it does not come with bubble solution, which seems silly, especially since Fubbles is a good bubble brand. Pick up a large bottle of bubble soap because the bucket can hold up to 20 ounces at a time, and then you'll be good for a long while.

This bucket and the Fubbles bubble solution are both made in the USA.

Best for Babies

Little Kids CoComelon No-Spill Musical Bubble Machine

Pros

  • CoComelon is popular with kids
  • Plays part of one catchy tune and makes bubbles
  • Music can be turned off
  • Includes a large jar of bubble solution

Cons

  • "The Wheels On the Bus" will be stuck in your head

Here's another container that can't spill. Though it's age-graded for ages 3 and up, if you set this up and run it for a baby, they'll be delighted. It plays music and sends out bubbles!

Specifically, it plays a part of "The Wheels on the Bus" from the CoComelon show. You can also turn off the song (it gets to be repetitive) and just use this in bubble-making mode.

Bubbles come out of the top, and though there's plenty of them, it's not too overwhelming for a small kid. There's also a Baby Shark version that, you guessed it, plays a part of the "Baby Shark" song.

You'll need three AA batteries to get this party started. We especially like that if a young baby grabs at this and even turns it upside-down, no bubble solution is lost. Some online reviewers say that the toy stopped working for them, but most have no problem. Like with other machines, it helps to rinse out the bubble basin after use.

Best Bubble Blaster

Zuru Bunch O Bubbles Blaster

Bunch O Bubbles Blaster
Credit: Zuru

Pros

  • Your kid can run around with this
  • Squeeze the trigger to start the bubbles
  • Rechargable battery
  • LED lights for fun in evening or dim light

Cons

  • Hard toy to share, so each kid will probably want one

The appeal of a bubble blaster is your kid can run around with it, so it doesn't have to stay in one place, and they pull the trigger when they are ready to unleash bubbles. If you have multiple kids, you're probably going to want to buy one for each, because it's a hard toy to share but very fun when every kid has one.

This is more than a foot long and a little more than 3 pounds, so though it is age-graded for kids 3 and up, slightly older preschoolers and elementary-school kids will do better with it (and yes, it's fun for adults too).

We like that the bubbles screw onto the gun to deliver continuous bubble solution. The 8.8 ounces will run out after about a half hour, so you'll want extra bubble solution to refill the bottle that fits into the blaster.

The good thing about the rechargeable batteries is you don't have to keep buying replacements. But reviewers say you need to charge this up for at least an hour before it's ready for your kid to play with for about a half hour.

If a blaster isn't your thing, Zuru also makes a non-motorized, inexpensive bubble glove that doesn't produce as many bubbles, but is goofy fun.

How we test bubble machines

child playing with a gazillion bubble machine outdoors
Jessica Hartshorn

The Good Housekeeping Institute evaluates hundreds of toys every year, looking at safety, construction and, ultimately, the deciding fun factor. You can read more about how we test toys and gifts.

For this story, we looked at more than a dozen bubble machines, with kids ages 3 to 10. We logged over 30 hours of bubble time to find the best models.

What to look for when buying a bubble maker

double line break

Whether you're shopping for a professional bubble machine or an old-fashioned bottles of bubbles, consider these factors before you purchase:

✔️ Age grading: Many toys are meant for kids ages 3 and up, but if you have a toddler, there are some bubble toys that are for ages 2 and up, and even some for ages 18 months and up. For maximum safety it's best to give your kids toys that are marked safe for their age. If you're running a bubble machine to delight a baby, keep it out of your baby's reach.

✔️ Power: A battery-operated bubble machine is most portable but one that can also be plugged in, or that uses rechargeable batteries, will ultimately cost you less money. Our list also includes one kid-powered pick, and that's the most money-saving of all!

✔️ Capacity for bubble solution: The more soapy solution a bubble machine holds, the longer it can go without needing adult help for a refill.

Pro tips for using a kids' bubble machine

double line break

Learn from us! Here are tips for using bubble machines and bubble blowers in a way that makes parents and kids happy.

✔️ Use outdoors. A bubble blower is releasing soap, but you don't want that all over the inside of your house. These are not small bubble blowers, either. Many of the choices on our list can produce thousands of bubbles quickly.

✔️ Buy more bubble soap than you think you need. Many bubble machines run out in 30 minutes, so it's best to keep extra bottles of bubble solution on hand (some of the machines don't come with solution at all, so check before purchasing).

✔️ Not all bubble solutions are the same. You would think that there can't be ineffective bubble solution, but it's out there, especially at discount places. Beware the super-cheap no-brand stuff that might be a complete waste of time and money. Our two favorites are Gazillion Bubbles and Fubbles.

✔️ Don't leave these sitting out in the yard for days. Like other outdoor toys, bubble machines can easily get gunky, which affects their performance. To make them last longer, it's wise to rinse them clean and store them inside to dry between uses.
