I was never a LEGO kid. Barbie, yes. American Girl, 100%. But I was never into LEGO. Fast forward to me, age 29, and I now identify as a LEGO adult. It all started with The Starry Night set.

Back in 2022, I was invited to The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York to experience the big reveal of LEGO Ideas The Starry Night set, based on Vincent van Gogh's painting and created in partnership with MoMA. LEGO Senior Designer Soren Dyrhoj spoke about how the set was created (the idea was initially submitted by a fan!) and how the colors were selected, all with the actual Starry Night hanging on the wall behind him.

I left feeling inspired and excited to build my own masterpiece as soon as I got home. Of course, life inevitably happened and it took me a while to start the project. I finally found the time and decided to get to work. As soon as I opened the box, I was hooked. I put it together over the course of a few days, and building it was all I wanted to do in my spare time. I found it to be a soothing way to exercise my creativity and keep my hands busy while watching TV and unwinding after work.

Made for adults 18 and up, building the set took some time due to the number of pieces — and I was a beginner. However, the instructions were incredibly easy to follow. The pieces come in separate packages, labeled with numbers according to the steps in the instruction booklet. The booklet also includes facts about Vincent van Gogh's life and his iconic painting.

The set is not cheap at $170, but you get what you pay for with quality bricks that click together and stay put. The pieces in the set are a gorgeous mix of blues, greens, browns and yellows inspired by the painting. On the finished product, the three-dimensional details truly pop.

You'll even build your own frame for your LEGO Starry Night, which is sturdy and can actually be hung on the wall (the finished product is 12" x 15"). Or, you can display the frame upright on any flat surface, from a shelf to your desk. If you do choose to display it standing, you can attach the included mini van Gogh (dressed in period-accurate clothing) and his easel to the bottom. This piece swivels, smoothly at that, so you can move him from left to right to get the correct angle as he paints — or simply admires your job well done. I faced him outward, because he's so darn cute.

Throughout the building process and especially when I saw the completed set, I was in awe of the design. The way the blocky LEGO pieces are used to mimic the swirling sky and rolling hills below it is truly a feat. The cypress tree looms large while the houses in the town appear tiny, mimicking the artist's use of perspective. It's no wonder this earned the "best LEGO set for artists" spot on our list of the best LEGO sets for adults.

Now that I know I can create my own works of art (with the help of a cleverly-designed set at least), I have a new obsession. I've since made LEGO Stitch and the LEGO Flower Bouquet, and I'm eyeing a number of other LEGO sets on Amazon that are discounted during the retailer's Big Spring Sale from now until March 31.
