Once your baby shows signs of being ready to try solid food (like sitting easily, and weighing at least 13 pounds) and you have your pediatrician's go-ahead, it may be time to pull up the high chair. Per American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) guidelines, parents can begin to offer purees and soft finger foods to supplement breastmilk or formula typically at around 6 months old.

Back in the day, baby spoons were just miniature versions of adult spoons, made entirely out of metal. Today, baby spoons that are dishwasher-safe are silicone, plastic and/or stainless steel. If you'll be handling the spoon, one with a long handle is helpful since you'll be sitting across from your baby. When you want your baby to wield the spoon themselves, something with a short handle is easier for them to grip. We have both kinds of spoons on our list.

Best Overall

EZPZ Tiny Spoon 2-Pack

Tiny Spoon 2-Pack

Pros

  • Baby-sized and easy for young babies to grip
  • Sensory nubs help babies learn to put the spoon in only so far
  • Great for learning to self-feed

Cons

  • We recommend hand-washing

Baby-sized and designed for a baby to learn to self-feed, this popular baby spoon comes in bright colors that match the brand's mini mat. The head easily fits in a baby's mouth but the little sensory nubs signal to them to stop there, to prevent gagging.

The fat handles are easy for babies to grip. "When we served purées, we used EZPZ spoons. I’d load one, hand it to our baby and have them bring it to their mouth," a mom of two kids 3 and under told us. "The big handle was very helpful for having their chubby little hands hold it."

But overall the spoons are tiny, as the name implies, and might fall down far in your dishwasher basket. Though they are dishwasher safe, we recommend handwashing, since it only takes a few seconds and prevents the silicone from picking up the taste of dishwasher detergent. (See our tips below about washing silicone.)

Munchkin White Hot Safety Spoons 4-Pack

White Hot Safety Spoons 4-Pack

Pros

  • Tips turn white if baby's food is too hot
  • Long handle is easy for parents to use to serve a young baby
  • Bargain

Cons

  • Thin handles are harder for babies to grip independently

Aside from only costing a little more than a dollar each, the tips of these spoons are heat sensitive and turn white if your baby's meal is still too hot to eat. That's especially useful if you're a family who purees the family dinner for your baby and you don't want to serve, for instance, piping-hot chicken puree.

The long handle on these Munchkin spoons makes them ideal for when you are serving your baby, if not great for a baby trying to grip them independently. "They're pretty much sold everywhere and are what I liked most for my babies' first feedings," said a tester who introduced her second baby to solid foods this year. Clean them in the top rack of the dishwasher.

Pros

  • Food sticks to these paddle-shaped spoons
  • Babies just jab one into their food and take a taste
  • More than 36,000 five-star Amazon reviews

Cons

  • Eventually you will want to introduce a scooped spoon

There's no need for babies to know how to properly scoop with this flat baby spoon — a baby can just jab it into their food and the ridges hold enough food for your baby to take a lovely taste. The short, fat handle can be held pretty much any which way, providing a young baby with a fast track to some independent eating. It's got more than 36,000 five-star Amazon reviews!

"We tried a different kind of spoon first and my daughter would manage to shake all the food off it before putting it in her mouth," said a tester whose daughter is now 7 months old. "Gootensils manage to keep some food on there so she actually gets some of it!"

Best for Self-Feeding

Olababy Training Spoon 2-Pack

Pros

  • Flexible spoon is soft and easy for a baby to chew on
  • Great for self-feeding small tastes of food
  • Can be used at nearly any angle for successful scooping

Cons

  • Hand-washing is easiest and best for these

A winner in one of our past Parenting Awards, this exceptionally flexible spoon is fun for babies to bite and chew on, and the tiny scoop holds just enough for an appropriate taste. Our Lab pros note that it's effective at scooping up food from different angles, so babies employing their own weird techniques will still likely have success.

In testing, parents said they felt this spoon was intuitive for infants to use. All the baby spoons on this list are technically dishwasher-safe, but since Olababy Training Spoons are silicone we recommend hand-washing them. Testers tell us they're super easy to rinse clean with dish soap and water.

Best Dipping Spoon

Nuby Dipeez Two-Pack

Pros

  • Each has a spoon side and a paddle side
  • Babies can jab, scoop or dip — it all works
  • Grippy textures make these easy to hold

Cons

  • Some reviewers say these are more of a teether than a spoon

As the name implies, all your baby really has to do is dip one of these into their food and then get it to their mouth for a taste. One side is a spoon, the other is a pre-spoon paddle, and either works. There's no wrong answer for how your baby uses these, and the grippy textures lend themselves well to a baby who has just learned to grasp a utensil and maneuver it.

Some online reviewers, however, say these work better as their baby's favorite teether rather than as a baby spoon, because of all the textures. We recommend hand-washing though these are dishwasher-safe.

Best Flatware Set

Elk and Friends Utensils Set 6-Pack

Pros

  • Our Lab pro's fave for a first "real" utensils set
  • Cleans easily in the dishwasher
  • Can be used through the preschool years

Cons

  • For toddlers 12 months and up, not newbies

After your baby crosses their first birthday, the introductory period of feeding solids is over and you're going to want them to gradually eat more and, let's face it, wear less.

They can get their first "real" utensil set with these, a favorite of our Nutrition Lab Director Stefani Sassos, mom to a 1-year-old. "You get the best of both worlds with these utensils," she said. "A stainless steel tip allows my toddler to effectively pick up her food and mimics the real thing, but the comfort of a silicone handle is easy for her to grab and ergonomically shaped to minimize misses. They have kept up great after months and months of continued use!"

Many online reviewers say their kids use these through toddlerhood and into the preschool years. They do well in the dishwasher, and since only the handle is silicone you don't have to worry about it picking up soap tastes from dishwasher detergent.

Best for Travel

OXO Tot On-the-Go Feeding Spoon

On-the-Go Feeding Spoon

Pros

  • Comes with a carrying case for travel
  • Small spoon head is a nice size for small babies
  • Ergonomic for an adult serving a baby first tastes

Cons

  • Not built for baby-led weaning

If you're on a long outing, going to a restaurant or taking a family vacation you still want to serve your baby, and it helps to have a spoon that comes with its own travel case to make everything cleaner and easier. Many online users rave about the size of the silicone-tipped spoon being perfect and some say they end up using this as their favorite at home, too. Most online reviewers use this for bringing purees to their child's mouth and not so much for baby-lead weaning — the handle is ergonomic for an adult who is introducing tastes.

Best Plastic Set

Beaba Toddler Self Feeding Cutlery And Utensils 10-Pack

Toddler Self Feeding Cutlery And Utensils 10-Pack

Pros

  • Set of 10 helps, especially if you have two young kids
  • Holds up well in the dishwasher
  • From the brand that makes a popular babyfood maker

Cons

  • Best for older babies who are past purees

When your baby is really starting to chow down you'll want at least four spoons and four forks to get through a day, because some are likely to hit the floor. This set includes even more spoons than that, a half dozen altogether, and is for the second stage of feeding when you're serving up fewer purees and letting your baby dig into chunkier foods.

You'll also appreciate a set of 10 if you have two young kids 5 or under. This plastic cutlery holds up well in the dishwasher, and the brand's Babycook Express baby food maker won one of our most recent Parenting Awards.

Best With a Looped Handle

Itzy Ritzy Spoon & Fork Set

Pros

  • Looped handle is easier for some babies to hold
  • Spork is a gentle spoon-like starter fork
  • Cute design

Cons

  • Spoon head is a little large for small babies

If you're looking for a baby spoon with a looped handle that is easy for you and your baby to hold, this set with the matching "spork" starter fork is a really cute choice. Some kids can hold the loop better than a straight handle, and your child might be one of them.

That big loop also stops your baby from pushing a utensil too far into their mouth, though some online reviewers say that the spoon head itself is a little big on these and not always easy for a small baby to eat from. As with other all-silicone choices we recommend hand-washing these in the sink.

How we chose the best baby spoons

a baby in a pink bow wields the ezpz silicone baby spoon, a good housekeeping choice for best baby spoon
Jess Platz

The experts in the Good Housekeeping Institute test products for parents all year long, especially in service to our annual Parenting Awards.

For this story, we considered 25 popular baby spoons to begin our research. Then we looked at baby utensils in our Lab, gathered feedback from our Lab directors who are parents, surveyed consumer testers and interviewed other new families (like the mom of this girl with her EZPZ spoon!) to find the nine recommended baby spoons on this list.

We also scoured online reviews to be sure we're showing products that parents nationwide are happy with.

What to look for when shopping for a baby spoon

double line break

Granted, buying a baby spoon does not require a huge outlay of cash, so this is not as high-stakes as deciding on a convertible car seat. But still, no one wants to waste money, or precious time, and you really want your baby to love mealtime. So when picking a baby spoon consider:

✔️ Age grading: Manufacturers take recommended ages seriously. If a baby spoon is marked for 6 months and up and your baby is at least 6 months old, it's meant for their size and developmental stage. But if it's marked for toddlers who are at least 8 or 12 months old, wait until your baby is that age before using it.

✔️ Handle size: In general a long handle gives you, the parent, more control when you are delivering first cereals and purees to your baby's mouth. But if you want your baby to feed themself, a short and fat handle made for their tiny hand will be better.

✔️ Material: When you're starting out you'll want a soft spoon that is easy on your young baby's sensitive mouth and gums. For this reason, most baby spoons are silicone or plastic. Silicone is especially soft and flexible. Toddlers can graduate to stainless steel.

✔️ Cleaning: Everything on our list is dishwasher-safe, though best loaded onto the top rack. However, plastic and stainless steel does best in the dishwasher. Silicone can go in, but we recommend hand-washing it (see below).

How to keep silicone, including baby spoons, from taking on smells

double line break

Home Care & Cleaning Lab Executive Director Carolyn Forté says it's not your imagination: Your silicone baby dishware can start to taste like soap. "Silicone items are known to smell and sometimes even taste like detergent, especially when washed repeatedly in the dishwasher," Forté says. "To prevent this, wash these items by hand in a dye- and fragrance-free dishwashing liquid and rinse them thoroughly before drying."

Baby spoons are so small that they are exceptionally easy to hand wash. Perhaps try a dish soap made specifically for baby products such as Dapple Bottle & Dish Soap or Babyganics Foaming Dish & Bottle Soap. But if you must use the dishwasher for ease and convenience, there is also fragrance-free Seventh Generation Dishwasher Detergent.
