"When you have a baby screaming for a bottle you want it as fast as possible," said one consumer tester who recently judged products for our annual Parenting Awards — and we agree! Not every baby requires their milk to be warmed to body temperature, which is what breast milk is at for a nursing baby. But plenty of babies do like their milk warm.

The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests simply placing a bottle in a bowl of warm water or running it under warm tap water. Some parents find it makes their life simpler to let a bottle warmer do the job. Most bottle warmers work either by heating water to create a hot bath to evenly warm a baby bottle, or by heating water to create steam that quickly warms a bottle.

Parents can comfort their baby and get a bib around them during the few minutes it takes a bottle warmer to gently heat formula or breast milk without any hot spots. A portable bottle warmer is also useful for travel and to keep by your bedside for late-night bottlefeeding. Finally, a bottle warmer can usually also heat jars of baby food, and some that use steam can have an alternate use as a pacifier sanitizer.

Note: With any bottle warmer, you will want to thaw frozen breast milk before heating, and then be careful to ensure it doesn't get over a 104 degrees in order to not damage some of its nutrient properties.

The experts in the Good Housekeeping Institute's Kitchen Appliances & Innovation Lab as well as the pros in the Parenting and Toys Lab review parenting products of all kinds, including feeding products such as the best baby food makers. To find the best bottle warmers, they considered five essential criteria: Warming efficiency, safety features, cleaning ease, bottle fit and cost. These are our top-rated picks.

Best Overall

Philips AVENT Fast Baby Bottle Warmer

Fast Baby Bottle Warmer

Pros

  • Quickly and evenly heats milk
  • Small and quiet
  • Intuitive and uncomplicated
  • Fits most bottles and baby food jars
  • Automatic shutoff after an hour

Cons

  • Did not work optimally with glass bottles in our Lab tests

Testers for our most recent Parenting Awards said this was the best warmer that they tried. "It can warm a 5-ounce bottle of refrigerated breast milk in about 3 minutes," one parent told us.

It warms consistently thanks to circulating water that helps ensure there are no hot spots. (You pour water into the device's open top.) It features temperature control that should detect initial temperature to prevent milk and food from overheating. When the milk or food reaches the optimal temperature, the indicator light tells you that the bottle is ready and keeps it warm for up to 60 minutes before automatically shutting off. It fits most bottles (including odd-shaped ones, like Comotomo) and baby food jars.

Our caveat is that, in Lab tests, this did not work optimally with glass baby bottles. "Heating five ounces of milk in a glass bottle took two and a half minutes longer than advertised on the box and the milk got up to 125 degrees, which is too hot for baby," noted a Lab pro — and some online reviewers agree that the Fast does not work well with glass.

But across the board our consumer testers praised this for being quiet, aesthetically pleasing and small enough to easily store in the kitchen. "It is very easy to use and intuitive — you just set it to however many ounces the bottle is and hit the button," said one. It also has a setting for frozen milk or purees.

The First Years 2-in-1 Simple Serve Bottle Warmer & Sanitizer

Pros

  • Heats bottles and sanitizes pacifiers and pump parts
  • Works with nearly any bottle
  • Inexpensive
  • Auto shut-off and light indicator features

Cons

  • Takes some trial and error to ensure you don't overheat

This bottle warmer works with steam, and because it comes with a little basket it can hold and sanitize pacifiers and breast pump parts in addition to heating bottles and baby food jars.

Like our best overall pick, this has an automatic shut-off to prevent overheating. And it works with almost any kind of bottle — wide mouth, narrow mouth, disposable or angled bottles. Unlike our best pick, however, there is nothing reading the initial temperature so it is possible to get the milk hotter than you intend, especially if you are only heating a small amount.

Since this works by boiling water into steam you will need to add a small vial of water at every use (the vial fits onto the front of the machine). A light indicator will go off when the bottle is ready. But use caution; small parts, especially, can come out of the sanitizing process very hot. Note: With any bottle warmer, you will want to thaw frozen breast milk before heating, and then be careful to ensure it doesn't get over a hundred degrees in order to not damage some of its nutrient properties.

Best for Travel

Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature Portable Warmer

Pros

  • Portable — no power source needed
  • Affordable
  • Easy to give a bottle a hot-water bath anywhere you are

Cons

  • Heats to an imprecise temperature

Perfect for times when you'll be out with the baby all day, this portable travel bottle warmer can fit in your diaper bag. It's a two-part system: The insulated stainless-steel thermal flask holds about 12 ounces of boiling hot water for 10 hours. The extra-large plastic container acts as a warming chamber that is big enough to fit most bottles, pouches or baby-food jars. When you're ready, pour the hot water into the plastic container and then add the bottle or jar to warm it.

The hot water bath brings milk to a warmer temperature. The exact temperature will vary depending on whether you're using the hot water after just one hour in the flask or after nine hours, since it may cool over time. But this is still super useful if you're out of the house and your baby won't drink milk that isn't warmed.

If you only use a quarter of your hot water at a time, you can heat up to four bottles or jars with one flask during the course of the day. At home, you'd be better off with an appliance so the heating is more consistent.

Best for Multiple Kids

Kiinde Kozii Baby Bottle and Breast Milk Warmer

Kozii Baby Bottle and Breast Milk Warmer

Pros

  • Accommodates most bottle shapes and pouches
  • Consistent milk temperatures
  • Can heat multiple bottles before refilling with water
  • Defrosts well — just might take two cycles

Cons

  • Makes a noise while it's working

The Kiinde Kozii also scored well with our consumer testers, though a few said it took a bit longer to thaw frozen milk than the instructions said it would. It works similarly to our best overall choice with warm, circulating water, and like the other electronic warmers on our list there is an auto shut-off feature. It accommodates most bottle shapes and heats to a consistent temperature.

You can fill up the tank and warm a few bottles before refilling again, making this warmer ideal for multiple kids, for instance if you have a newborn and a toddler, or if you have twins. Our tip for defrosting frozen milk and food is to run it through two cycles. The biggest tester complaint: "The Kiinde bottle warmer is louder than others because it makes a clicking noise."

Best Digital

Baby Brezza Electric Baby Bottle Warmer

Electric Baby Bottle Warmer

Pros

  • Digital readout
  • Can work with an app
  • Two modes, one best for breast milk

Cons

  • Pricier than others

Though it is pricier than others, the readout on the Baby Brezza is easy-to-see digital, and the device works with an app that sends a notification when your bottle is ready. It can work in either "Steady Warm" mode — which uses a warm water bath to safely heat or defrost breastmilk — or "Quick Warm" mode, which uses steam heat to work quickly (best for formula and baby food).

There is a basket inside that fits almost all bottles, pouches and food jars, and there is an auto shut-off feature to prevent overheating. For parents who frequently make formula, another option is using the $50 Baby Brezza Instant Warmer which dispenses warm water on demand for making bottles. Our consumer testers have also liked the $180 Baby Brezza Formula Pro Mini, which one said "makes bottle time so much easier and less messy" by mixing, heating and dispensing formula.

How we test bottle warmers

Jessica Hartshorn

We test baby bottle warmers both in the Good Housekeeping Institute's Kitchen Appliances & Innovation Lab and in the Parenting and Toys Lab, reviewing them to calculate if they heat milk in the time advertised and to a safe temperature.

We also try them as "real people" to rate how intuitive and easy to use they are. But our best feedback comes from consumer testers who test bottle warmers at home and then fill out a survey. They tell us their experience and also compare the model that they test to any other bottle warmer they have used in the past.

Two things to consider when shopping for the best bottle warmer

double line break

✔️ Power source: Most bottle warmers are plug-in appliances meant to sit on your kitchen counter or on your nightstand. The non-powered bottle warmer on our list works by keeping hot water hot, so you can create a hot water bath for your bottle when you're ready to serve it.

There are some baby bottle warmers that use batteries — we don't have one of those among our top five, but the Momcozy Portable Bottle Warmer works with a rechargeable battery. That one is unique in that it heats the milk itself and not the bottle.

There's also a portable travel option that uses convection technology and is rechargeable. The Ember Baby Bottle System will keep milk cool while you're out and about, then warm it when it's time for a meal. But it's expensive and requires that you use the Ember bottles.

✔️ Bottle size: Make sure to check the dimensions of the bottle warmer to be sure it fits the bottles that your baby prefers, whether they are wide or narrow.

How a baby bottle warmer works

double line break

Bottle warmers most often use water to heat a bottle: They either create a hot water bath or they steam the bottle. While using steam is faster, it can scald you or your baby if you're not careful, and it might overheat fragile breast milk. Water baths tend to heat more evenly, and are most often recommended for breast milk, but they take longer than steam to work.

There are also a few bottle warmers that use convection to heat. A final option is to use a formula-making appliance like the Baby Brezza Formula Pro, which will mix your formula with gently heated water, but that costs more than $150 and is specific to formula-feeding versus heating breastmilk.

Do I really need a bottle warmer?

double line break

No. First, there is no research that says warm milk is better for babies' digestion than cold or room temperature milk. Breast milk straight from a parent is at body temperature, so a baby who both nurses and drinks from the bottle might like milk that's on the warmer side.

But as with so many things, different babies have different preferences. Some will take their breast milk or formula at any temperature. Others will be extremely picky. If your baby does like warm milk, it's perfectly easy to warm a bottle of milk in hot water from the tap — but hard to tell exactly what temperature the milk ends up at.

Many bottle warmers are designed specifically to quickly warm liquids to an ideal body temperature of 98ºF. Some parents also like bottle warmers for nighttime bottles that they wish to serve without needing to walk to the kitchen, so they might keep a warmer near the nursery. Bottle warmers are much better for heating milk than a microwave — never use a microwave to heat breast milk (it kills many of its healthy properties) and experts don't recommend a microwave for formula, either, because it can cause the milk to heat unevenly, leaving scalding hot spots.
