No matter the season, no one likes looking pale or pasty, myself included. But with all the data about sun damage, aging skin and skin cancer, is it really worth soaking up the sun for a tan? The good news: you don't have to. Thanks to these top-tested formulas, you can get glowing skin the safer way, using a self-tanner.
"Tanning technology has come a long way, especially in the last decade," says Sophie Evans, St. Tropez Skin Finishing Expert. "Today we do not rely solely on the tanning agent DHA (dihydroxyacetone) which, when used on its own, could leave skin a little orange, had the old-fashioned smell of self-tan and could be responsible for drying the skin. We use penetration enhancers that make the DHA work quicker, absorb deeper and speed up the whole development process."
To find the best self-tanners, scientists in the Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty, Health and Sustainability Lab tested 115 face and body formulas (from drugstore to luxury brands) on 701 expert and consumer testers. The testers then share their in-depth feedback on each product's attributes, application and results. In total, Lab experts evaluated over 2,332 consumer feedback data points to identify the top-rated self-tanners on the market, including ones for beginners, a range of skin tones from pale to dark, sensitive skin and more.
