One thing I've noticed as I've entered my 40s: skin aging includes more than just wrinkles. My face (and body) is no longer as firm as it once was, due to a decline in collagen and elastin — proteins that provide structural support and elasticity. "Sagging skin is primarily caused by this loss," explains Mamina Turegano, M.D., a dermatologist in Metairie, Louisiana.
To remedy this, there's no shortage of formulas proclaiming to counteract the appearance of lax skin with firming and lifting effects. Most commonly in serum and moisturizer form, these products contain ingredients like peptides, retinol, vitamin C, growth factors and niacinamide that purport to stimulate collagen production or ones that plump skin, such as hyaluronic acid.
But which tightening skincare products really work? To find out, the Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab rigorously tests anti-aging treatments including serums, neck creams and night creams. Lab scientists use instruments to measure skin firmness before and after use, while consumer testers evaluate ease of use, performance and satisfaction. In the Beauty Lab's latest night cream test, for example, experts analyzed 11,200 data points from instrumental testing and consumer feedback to determine the top performers. Below, find our Beauty Lab's top picks that truly firm skin.
