Retinol is considered a holy grail ingredient of skincare for its many benefits — treating acne and signs of aging, to name a few — but it can be harsh on skin, leading to redness and irritation. Enter bakuchiol. “Bakuchiol is derived from the seeds of the Psoralea corylifolia, also known as the babchi plant, and has been found in Ayurveda and Eastern medicine for centuries,” says Marisa Garshick, M.D., F.A.A.D., a board-certified dermatologist at MDCS. “It has become popular as a plant-based alternative to retinol as it is thought to have similar benefits and to be less irritating.”

Like retinol, bakuchiol is believed to stimulate skin cell turnover and improve skin tone, texture, fine lines and wrinkles, according to research, as well as reduce inflammation and improve discoloration. “It also provides antioxidant benefits, helping to protect the skin from free radical damage,” Dr. Garshick says. “Bakuchiol is thought to be a good option for those with sensitive skin or those who cannot tolerate a retinol. This is a great option for someone looking for a natural alternative to a retinoid.”

These are the best bakuchiol serums, according to Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab testing, dermatologist and editor picks as well as positive reviews.

Matter of Fact Wrinkle and Texture Concentrate

Wrinkle and Texture Concentrate

Pros

  • Visibly firms after four weeks
  • Improves radiance
  • Smooths fine lines and wrinkles over time

Cons

  • Can’t be used near eyes

Key ingredients: Encapsulated retinol, l-ascorbic acid, azelaic acid, ferulic acid, lipids | Fragrance-free: Yes

A well-tested product in the GH Beauty Lab’s recent serum study, the Matter of Fact Wrinkle and Texture Concentrate earned top marks for visibly firming and radiance. The potent formula earned the highest scores for firming skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and boosting radiance after four weeks.

Testers also appreciated that it’s easy to dispense and apply. “This product felt like velvet going onto my skin,” one tester said. “It absorbed nicely and visibly reduced fine lines after two weeks. It felt very luxurious. My dark spots were somewhat diminished.”

The serum also contains retinol for extra anti-aging powers, though it can lead to irritation. Another warning: It can’t be applied near the eyes because it can sting.

A bi-phase formula — which means you have to give it a good shake every time before using — means this Acure product is essentially two serums in one. The top formula is loaded with antioxidants, while the bottom is a hydrating serum. Turmeric delivers antioxidants to calm, soothe, brighten and add a glow, while eggplant softens and smooths.

“I reeeeaaally love this serum,” an Amazon reviewer said. “It absolutely makes my skin look glowy, smooth and beautiful. It absorbs quickly and keeps my skin moisturized…My pores are less noticeable and it's helping lighten some dark spots, so I need less makeup. All in all, it's probably the most effective serum I've ever tried, and I have tried a lot of them. I won't waste money on more expensive and less effective products anymore.”

double line break

“Bakuchiol is suitable for all skin types, but it’s especially beneficial for sensitive skin, dry skin, acne-prone skin and mature skin,” Dr. Garshick says. “While it can be used by anyone, including those with sensitive skin, it is always good for those with sensitive skin to test it out on a small area to ensure to reaction.”

double line break

“Although it is considered more gentle than retinoids, there is still a risk of sensitivity including redness, dryness or stinging of the skin, especially with initial use,” Dr. Garshick says. “For this reason, it is still a good idea to slowly introduce it into a skincare routine and to avoid combining with other harsh ingredients unless already formulated together, such as retinoids or exfoliating acids.”
