If you deep condition your hair every week, but still deal with frizz and unmanageable knots every time you try to style it, you might need to swap our your shampoo depending on your hair type. Even the best shampoos can strip out the natural oils that curly hair needs for a healthy shine.

Enter cleansing conditioners, or co-washes (conditioning washes). Cleansing conditioners are two-in-one formulas that claim to wash and condition hair without sulfates, Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab experts explain. Without sulfates present, cleansing conditioners create little to no lather compared to regular shampoos, so consumers might not feel squeaky clean after use. The trade-off is hair that feels hydrated and smoother. "Using a co-wash gets you that clean that you would have gotten from a shampoo, but it leaves it feeling you just rinsed conditioner out of your hair," says Tippi Shorter, celebrity hairstylist and Global Artistic Director for L'Oréal's Mizani.

To find the best cleansing conditioning products, our Beauty Lab chemists analyzed over 50 products and pared down to test the very best co-washes in the Lab. We looked for color vibrancy, putting 45 hair swatches through 450 wash and dry cycles and 225 hours of UV exposure, simulating 4 weeks of wear. Then, we sent 528 products to consumers across the nation to blind test for two weeks to provide feedback on things like smoothness, shininess, cleanliness, moisturization, and overall satisfaction and performance. We evaluated Lab scores and consumer ratings to find the best cleansing conditioners for every type of hair.

Can you use cleansing conditioners on fine hair?

You can, but too much use can leave fine hair feeling greasy or heavy. "These formulas have a higher ratio of conditioner to cleanser," says P&G principal scientist Jeni Thomas, Ph.D., "so they're best for hair types that need more nourishment." In our Lab tests, women with fine hair reported the lowest satisfaction and performance scores, but if you're worried about co-washing being too heavy on your hair, you can use it as a single-step alternative between wash days.

That said, the best candidates for using cleansing conditioners regularly usually have:

  • Curly, wavy, or coiled hair
  • Dry or damaged hair
  • Color-treated hair
  • Natural hair
  • Thick and textured hair

See below for the 12 best cleansing conditioners, no matter your hair type. All picks were vetted by our beauty experts or come from online rave reviews.
