It's easy to overlook the power of a good face primer — when you have limited time and are trying to keep your skincare routine to just a few products, using a primer can seem like an easily skippable step. But before you put that primer back in your makeup bag, we've got some news for you: Makeup primer is the ultimate multi-tasker, and it's beneficial to all skin types. "It preps your skin for foundation and the rest of your products, and helps your makeup really last and offers skincare benefits, too," says Sadah Saltzman, a makeup artist in New York City.

Nowadays, primers are no longer one size fits all. "There are now so many primers that address skin issues that may be causing your makeup to fade away quickly," Saltzman explains. You can find primers designed for oily skin, dry skin, mature skin, large pores — the list goes on. Saltzman suggests looking for a non-comedogenic formula that won't clog your pores, especially if you have oily, sensitive or acne-prone skin. And with so many great options, it's easy to choose a good primer that fits your budget.

The Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab has a history of testing makeup primers on consumers to analyze factors including skin smoothing, application, blurring effects and look and feel of skin after use. In the a recent primer test, consumers with different skin types evaluated the formulas on ease of use, performance and overall satisfaction. Here, we've rounded up the best face primers you can buy, based on GH Beauty Lab testing, editor and makeup artist favorites and top-reviewed picks, including the best drugstore primers.

GH Seal
Airbrush Away Primer

Pros

  • Smooths and even out skin

No7's powerful primer packs a big punch — in addition to prepping skin for makeup, the Good Housekeeping Seal holder "makes pores and fine lines less visible," according to testers. They also raved that it "makes skin look smoother" and "skin tone look more even." And while it (basically) goes without saying, the primer works seamlessly with foundation, meaning no pilling or smudging.
